《Is there a day after tomorrow》Ch 6 Level up and an encounter

''The fresh air feels awesome''

I didn't know how everything would end up, but I finally could leave the stuffy hotel behind me and head toward greener pastures.

While the roaming zombies are dangerous, they are still pretty easy to avoid so I think it will be just fine.

I started to move quietly towards mid size alleyways as it is too risky to head towards the main road.

I can only assume plenty of zombies roam around on the sides of highways and larger roads.

''Haaa.. How nice it would be to see someone that actually breathes and talks normally'' I muttered to myself and kept moving pace while trying to be as quiet as possible.

Looking around I saw multiple small zombie groups roaming around the streets and I could feel that this place was totally devoid of living people.

''What happened here? I can see mostly tourist clothes on the zombies and most of them don't even look like the typical Spanish people, there is even like 3 groups of Asian ethnicity with cameras hanging on their necks wtf.''

''Those fucking government people didn't just bother to rescue hotels and tourist areas. Did their evacuation in silence to not attract the attention of the zombies or cause suspicion from the people living here?''

Shaking my head I got rid of the useless thoughts on my head and focused on the task at hand, escape.

On the way I looked if I could find anything of use to me, weapons, food, supplies, protective gear but the streets were pretty empty as if someone had cleaned all the useful items nearby.

Passing the semi narrow streets while avoiding zombies I finally came across a roadblock, a small group of them.

''So my options are to either turn back and re-route or clear those 3 bastards blocking my way. I guess it's gamble either way so might as well try to adapt in the new environment''

As I clutched my Curtain-kun and started to slowly sneak behind dumpsters for visual cover I heard crunching sound and looked under my foot, only to find a fucking soda can messing up my plans.

Furious at my own clumsiness I could not help but swear.

''Richard you fucking dimwit how can you not even look where you step, they definitely heard that'' And as to prove my words correct, the small group started to slowly shamble towards me.

''Nice and easy.. deep breaths it's just few slow cockroaches no biggies''

I felt adrenaline starting to pump through my veins and felt the fight or flight psychological response coming to me, my answer of course was FIGHT.

Taking a balanced stance, I inched toward the closest zombie and prepared to strike it with my curtain pole. '' 5 meters...3...2...DIE BITCH ''

I struck the zombie with my pole, and very quickly it fell down and I heard a Ding sound in my head telling me that experience came rolling in.

Wondering if this apocalypse is actually so easy, I felt more confident in my actions.

Ecstatic from the first kill I moved on to the other two and after a few hits to their heads I heard the previously familiar Ding accompanied by something different this time.

Level up [ 0 → 1 ]

While the adrenaline rush was affecting me I cheered and wondered what surprises the level up brings with me.

I couldn't check it out right now as this alleyway wasn't safe and other zombies most likely heard the scuffle.

''Well if it's only this I don't think I should have problems making it out from here.''

I continued my great escape and while occasionally I met a few isolated zombies I could just bash their head in and be done with it.

''After one block to the right and then straight ahead for 1km, then left toward the bridge and I should be on the clear, no biggie.''

With relaxed pace I continued strolling ahead while keeping lookout for possible threats, hearing scratching noises and low moaning from the street.

I could feel the sweet spring weather smiling at me: Skipping in the sun, bashing heads in.

It somehow reminded me of my visit to Minneapolis, where I witnessed massive riots. Except of course instead of beating the police or other protesters, the targets for public outlet of frustration this time were zombies.

As I was making the turn for the bridge, I heard the sound of gunshots coming from ahead and I started to slow down my pace and be aware of the dangers ahead.

''That's not just one or two guns, it has to be whole company at least.''

I peeked behind the corner and saw the bridge, the only problem was that there were at least 10 000 zombies blocking my way out of the city, bottlenecking the bridge entrance.

''What the in the flying spaghetti monsters name is so attractive to these zombies to block the way out of the city?''

As I pondered, I heard the door opening from across the street and saw a living person. Finally, I didn't have to talk to myself for company.

The man signaled with his hand to come over and for the moment I felt it was the correct call since the exit is blocked anyway.

As I got closer the man opposite of me asked something in spanish.

''Estas mordido o herido???''

''Uhh no habla español, inglés''

''Are you wounded or bitten??''

''Nope, what's the deal with exit being blocked?''

''Come inside and don't try any stupid shit.''

The man answered and indicated to enter first.

While being baffled about his obvious hostility I could understand it if I had been bitten but guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Entering the old fashioned block of flats and walking towards the staircase, I could see that the unknown man was truly very different from me.

The reflection from the glass door showed me that he was holding a handgun on his right hand and the thought came to me

''Am I going to be murdered here today?''

While walking the staircase upwards I tried to ask the man's name, but he just kept quiet the entire duration we walked.

All I could do was to hope he was not going to murder me there.

Between the living floors I could see motionless zombies with holes in the head and blood sprayed on the walls.

Then it hit me that maybe, just maybe I was too naive to trust the first person that I could come across.

''This is it, first door on the left, knock it three times.''

The man spat out and fell silent again.
