《World Servers - Dawn》Chapter 1 - Introduction

Necrobump, senior Lord Wizard for the guild I Like Big Booty, peered cautiously into the hallway from his apartment. He looked to the left. Then he looked to the right. It was only when it was abundantly obvious that the coast was clear that he stepped out into the hallway and closed the door.
The hallway smelt of cat urine. The incandescent light in one of the wall sconces flickered fitfully in need of being replaced. The carpet was dirty and stained.
Necro took out his key and placed it in the door, locking it behind him. Then taking another quick look around, he held up his wizard staff and, drawing some inner power, quickly muttered the ward of protection to fortify his home against invaders. The ward itself was probably unnecessary. This was a null magic zone; spell casters couldn't just tap a nearby lay line and force magic to do their bidding.
Few people bothered to specialize in mana manipulation. It was too much of an esoteric subject, its uses were too limited, especially when mana was so plentiful. On the East Coast of this server farm there were maybe three or four other people who were his equal in the subject. None were better. There were only a handful of people, six or seven that he knew of with lesser talents who could maybe hold their own enough to be useful.
But in the words of the great and wise Yossarian "Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't after you." Just because there were very few people who had the talent to get into his apartment didn't mean that Necro would succumb to being sloppy and make his home easily accessible.
The wards he cast were as strong as he could make them. It would be hard even for him to take down when he came home after the raid, this was on purpose.

When he was done, Necrobump turned and walked to the elevator. He was wearing his full raiding gear. Custom tailored Saville Road Suit with the bonuses to intelligence, insight, and spell casting.
In his left hand he held his staff aloft -- a synthetic 1000 carat diamond embedded in the head of the staff held more mana than any five wizards could pull and he could use the power in it to temporarily gift an entire lay line worth of power to anybody he chose. It was invaluable in combat, especially in null or low magic zones. It was also a bitch to refill – to get it maxed out took months, and if he ever used every drop of mana in the stone it would shatter – so he hoped, knowing fully well that this hope was futile, that they wouldn't need to use it this raid.
Strapped to his waist was the Glock 19 that his raiding group insisted he carry so that he wouldn't waste his own mana. Shrike would sometimes take him shooting, and he faked being terrible with it to make her happy.
"Ding" went the elevator and just as he was about to step onboard one of his neighbors stepped out into the Hall.
"Alex! I was looking for you."
"What can I do for you Ms. Bee?" Necro said, pretending to be excited. Ms. Bee was a civ – a civilian – basically she was a real digitalized person who for the most part hadn’t bothered to level up.
"Have you seen Mr. Sulla? He seems to have wandered off again."
"Sorry, Ms. Bee. I haven't seen your cat."
"He is such a naughty boy. Always getting into trouble. Always running away. I seem to have that trouble in this building. The cat's just get out and they don't seem to come back." She said.

"If you find Mr. Sulla I would be happy to reprogram him for you. Make him docile or at least have a healthy fear of the hallway."
"No. No. Thank you for the offer, but cats need to explore and they need to be curious. And I like Mr. Sulla just he way he is. I just hope he comes back soon, Mr. Pyrrhus, Mr. Arminius, Madamn Livia and little Poppaea miss him."
Then as if seeing Necro for the very first time, she looked him over, taking an especially long look at the staff he was holding in his hand and the hand gun at his side.
"Alex, that is some pretty destructive weaponry. You know how I feel about guns. Certainly you don't need all those death gear just to sell some real estate?"
Ms. Bee thought he had a job selling real estate. It was one of his fake persona so that people wouldn't get too suspicious and come and investigate his stuff. You really can't be too paranoid. "Can't help it Ma'am, I'm dealing with gamers and you know just how loathsome those people are."
"Ooooohhhh. Don't get me started." Ms. Bee said. "You know I was out last week buying food for my cats, and those dratted gamers hit me with a ball of fire. I respawned and woke up in my apartment, and I swear Mr. Sulla was eyeing me trying to decide if I would wake up of if he could start nibbling me for nourishment. Bad cat. So I go out again, figuring it was probably safe now, but at the grocery store there is destruction everywhere. It is raining fire, and people are shooting bullets, and the regular customers are either dead on the ground, or running for cover. Alex it was a war zone I tell you. They should ban gamers from this server. Serve them right. Dangerous hoodlums all of them. "
"Ms. Bee. I just had a though. I think I remember someone mentioning during one of the condo meetings, that the cat in 302 was in heat. Do you think a healthy cat like Mr. Sulla might be out investigating and maybe stuck around looking for an opportunity to ahem get a bit of tail?"
"That naughty cat. I betcha you're right. You just wait there, Alex, and hold the elevator for me and I will get my cat carrier box."
"I would love to Ms. Bee," said Necrobump, " but I'm already late. My clients are waiting."
"Well then. You just watch out for those dreadful unreliable gamers. But I hope you sell them the apartment you're showing them. I never really understood why you live in such a dreadful building as this one, you're such a polite, successful, handsome boy. Did I mention I have a niece..."
"I've gotta get going Ms. Bee. I am really late." And with that Necro released the elevator doors sighed a great sigh of relief as the elevator began to head down to the parking garage in the basement.

End's End
Crow Tempora is an optimistic country bumpkin who knows very little of life in the heart of the world's cities, however behind his easy smile is a stony determination to achieve his goal of accomplishing the impossible- one that he can only reach by winning the Sieve, the largest competition of young Mystics the world has ever seen. Famous across the entire world and loved almost as widely, Gemini Menza has never known a single day of anonymity in her short life. Entering the Sieve not to work for victory, but to collect it as a boring chore, she soon finds herself shocked by the difficulty of her tasks, both inside the contest and out. After all, she was also given the privilege of joining at a younger age than anyone else. Machiavellian manipulator Unity Eden is growing tired of the tasks forced onto him by those who control him, unfortunately he also happens to be controlled by the leaders of the largest empire the world has ever seen. While he has little hope of wriggling his way out of it, he intends to make his entry into the Sieve as damaging to them as he can. While most are fixated on the events of the Sieve's stages, intently watching the young and talented as they go head to head to find out who holds the title of strongest, Karma Alabaster has her eyes on the powers behind the curtains- the endless machinations of the Immortals and their servants. Caught between enough crisscrossing schemes to form a spiderweb, she must use every ounce of her not inconsiderable mind to keep herself from playing into another's hands... all while solving a mysterious and seemingly impossible murder. The winds of change are blowing in Bermuda, and only one person will shape them. Cover art by: Nova @no_no_nova on tiktok @no_no_no_nova on ig THREE NEW CHAPTERS POSTED EVERY SINGLE WEEK.

The Complete Alchemyst book 2
Continuation of the Alchemyst book 1 Sometimes to be the good guy, you gotta be the bad guy. This is a story about Louis, a guy that was just trying to get along before he got kidnapped and forced to play cook by a Cartel. He's no Heisenberg, however. Now that he's out of Prison and put a beat down on some of the folks that put him away, he's facing the real pressures of Life as a single-person superpower: Everyone wants to use him for their own purposes. Along the way he's met a few girls, some good, some bad. He's looking to save the world, establish an evil empire, secure a future for the people he considers his, and maybe finally kill that damned superhero that started it all. This is not 'the boys'. Not all superheroes or supervillains are evil, The 'super' world is expanding to include aliens, magic, and the children of ancient deities and legends. This is NOT a superhero genre deconstruction. Many heroes truly are heroes, and they don't all need to be destroyed to make a good story, but it does look into the dark side of superpowers and the unreasonable and often contradictory demands placed on exceptional people. Please note that this book has extremely graphic and sometimes gross fight scenes, heroes as villains, villains as heroes, opinionated and often politically incorrect characters, some graphic sex scenes, dad jokes, dirty jokes, realistic depictions of romance and flirting, bondage and dominance themes, and more than a few cuss words when they are really appropriate.

This story was a test of certain ideas that I will be putting to use in a new book that I will be writing.

Yin-Yang
Mages in North America seem to have it all – typically from well-off families, and able to manipulate their environment in ways most of the world would never believe. They don’t even have to bother with the mundane details of life like housework, thanks to their sensitives, who also make a useful source for extra magical energy. After all, sensitives have no use for it themselves, and if mages weren’t meant to make use of it, then the sensitives would obviously have some way to prevent that. That a mage can transform a sensitive physically, with no restrictions beyond overall mass and basic biological viability, whereas magic tends not to work directly on any other living thing, is only further proof. And look at the way they live on their own, barely a step above animals. It’s better for them to belong to a mage. Sensitives in North America live on the edge of society and survival – typically so paranoid they avoid hospitals and anything else that could lead to being tracked, many of them with little or no education and no legal identity or existence. Mages exist, and mages want sensitives for some reason, but no one ever comes back to explain what that reason is. Waiting every day for the hunters to notice them doesn’t lead to much motivation or hope for the future. And once they’re captured, they’re the property of someone with a terrifying amount of power over them. Anything is better than capture. Mages are born to be the masters, and sensitives are born victims. Or are they? Jax’s life is turned upside-down when he’s caught by the hunters and sold to a mage. Andreas is still mourning for his previous sensitive, though, unconsciously creating a difficult standard for Jax to live up to, all the more so while still struggling to come to terms with this new reality as Andreas’ sensitive. A runaway sensitive isn’t what Van expects at the mental health centre. Is this a hunter trap, set for him and the rest of the Donovan family by the hunters? The hunters would, after all, love to see them cross the line openly and finally do something they can be charged with. Either way, Miranda’s genuinely in trouble, and he can’t just abandon her to it. Snatching a sensitive out from under the hunters and hiding her is odd behaviour for a mage – but then, Catherine is an odd mage, living in disgrace in the old servants’ quarters of her grandmother’s house, responsible for cooking and housework. Lila owes Catherine her freedom; is there a way to help Catherine achieve her own, and at what price? Tension is building between traditionally-minded mages and those advocating change, and something has to break. *** Yin-Yang includes a small amount of profanity and no graphic sex or on-screen physical violence. However, sex and gender roles and relationships within the mage/sensitive subculture are non-traditional in mainstream North American terms. The key criterion in a primary relationship is not relative sex or gender, but the pairing of mage and sensitive; given the transformation of sensitives by their mages, physical sex is non-absolute for a sensitive, and gender identity can vary as in anyone else. *** *** The way mages treat sensitives is extremely varied and, in some cases is outright abusive. The struggle against that is pretty much the point of the book. It is NOT grimdark or misery-porn! However, if you will be triggered by this, please, don't read Yin-Yang! *** Complete stand-alone novel, 153K words! Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
