《Analyst Advancement! (A LitRPG Adventure)》Chapter 5: The Cheerful Deity of Omniscience

Books, books everywhere. And no, I wasn’t having a wonderful dream, this was real. I had found myself in a massive library, lit by floating candles throughout and reaching so high up that there appeared to be an abyss above me, with the bookshelves stretching down from it. There were shelves of books, baskets of books, stacks of books, around every corner and in every nook and cranny. But I couldn’t have any of them. It was a tantalizing pain, a craving that I couldn’t satiate. But when I tried to take any, they flew back onto the shelves. I had tried everything, and I would have tried nailing the books to one of the scattered desks just to read through them, but alas, I had no nails. I felt a tug the entire time I was here, pulling me towards somewhere. I followed it the best I could, but when I saw some interesting books, I couldn’t help examining them as much as I could. Even though most didn’t have titles down the spine like traditional books, I loved even running my hands down the shelves, savoring what I could of the sheer knowledge this place must contain.

As I got closer to the tug, it pulled harder. I hadn’t found anyone else here, monsters or people, so eventually, my fervent browsing of the shelves gave way to the tentative trekking of the path I was meant to take. The maze of shelves finally came to a little grotto of books and shelves. The flicker of warm candlelight was stronger here, many levitating candles surrounding the alcove.

“Come in now, don’t be shy,” a middle-aged man’s voice said from inside. That had the effect of making me a little shyer now that I knew someone was in there, but this is where that instinctive pull had led me. I stepped into the little space, stacks of books and rolls of paper haphazardly strewn. “You must be Gabriel. What a pleasure it is to meet you,” The man smiled warmly, in a grandfatherly way. He wore only plain brown robes reminiscent of sackcloth blanketed his scrawny frame, a pair of round spectacles plated in gold, and a pair of wooden sandals. His hair was messy and brown like his robes, and he had an open book held in each hand, a larger one open on his crossed legs.

“Yeah, that’s me. Who are you?”

“Call me Librex. I brought you here. I have been looking for a curious mind just like yours,” He let go of the books in his hand, and they gently shut and floated onto one of the lower stacks, “I am the god of knowledge. I created the analyst class just for someone like you, and I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to meet you.” Now as he spoke one of his hands moved, writing notes on a blank piece of paper while reading the volume on his lap. “I want you to be my chosen one. This will come as a great reward to you, but alas, all chosen ones of other deities will probably want to skin you. Deal?”

He looked up at me, stopping his writing and reading for a moment to give me his full attention.

[Become the chosen one of Librex?]

[Accept or Decline]

“I am going to need a little more to go on than just that.”

“Okay. You give me a limited amount of authority over you, as well as supplying me with vital energy that keeps me alive. In return, you get a cool pair of glasses.” He reached into a stitched pocket of his robes and pulled out a pair of glasses identical to his own, wiggling them in the air enticingly. I analyzed the spectacles.

“Will I be restricted in any way by making this agreement?” I asked. I wasn’t ready to give devotion to anything I wasn’t trusting of without making sure of it.

“So business-like! As expected of a candidate to be one of my chosen ones. You would remain fully unrestricted by this, still free to do as you please. I will probably give you quests here and there, but it is up to you to accept them or not,” The god’s smile tipped into an eager grin.

“I accept,” I spoke, and the system acknowledged. Librex stood, brushing himself off.

“Then these are yours, sir,” I blinked as he extended the round glasses toward me, sticking them onto my face “I eagerly await the fruits of our partnership.” He winked, and a gateway opened behind me. “I have arranged for your party to gather early. Do try to get along.” Then with a childish wave and his usual smile, he pushed me with surprising ease into the portal.
