Chapter 23 – Dust.
The demon knight took out his sword and raised his arm into air. Slowly massive demon army emerged behind the knight. Knight began to ride its horse towards us. Knight was riding approximately hundred meters in front of the army.
They had more than 10000 demons with them, and that was a big advantage.
General Halim was in shock. He was son a warrior but he didn’t have what it takes to be warrior. I had never met him before, but I could sense it. I took a horse and went to him. Nuve, Igdes and Aram was with him. All of them on horse. Aram was the commander of the troops that were protecting 2nd bridge. I nodded to all of them by bowing my head a bit. I knew they were great people but they haven’t leaded an army into a war. Situation was tense and even if we could survive – we would have an army of 5000 defeated.
The knight sheathed its sword. It turn back and again towards us. 5 demons left the army and came to stay behind the knight. Knight began to ride and stopped about hundred meters in distance to our army.
[Me]: General, excuse me for my insolence, I assume they are expecting us to meet them face to face.
[Halim]: Do you expect me to go there? “Brave” one! (He pronounced brave in a not so favorable tone, which I didn’t care much about as we were facing dare situation)
[Me]: You are the general leading this army!
[Igdes]: You should leave this matter to elders and leave now! (Igdes was a bit of politician but Nuve was a hot-blooded warrior and had an evilish grin on his face)
[Halim]: He shouldn’t leave. He will be with us facing the demons. Igdes, Nuve, Aram, Elana and you(he pointed towards me) will be coming with me. Rahul you are the commander of army in my absence.

Halim rode his horse and we rode behind him to the destination.
We came close enough to them to see what the other five demons were looking like.
First one was a two meter tall demon who had only his underwear covered by big metal spikes. He was nude and its body color was red. It had four horns. Two of them were big and the other small ones were located in between those two. He had a good build. It had its mouth open the whole time and its teeth looked like a jigsaw. It had two swords on it. Each sword was in one of his hands.
The second demon had just a simple sword at his hand. His body did seem like it had rotted but no smell was around. Left part of his head over his eye was missing.
The third one was the most interesting to me. She had caught my attention. Her face was very beautiful. A goddess. She had big busts. Her skin was as white as it could get. She had black leather covering her most important parts but still was a beauty to be enjoyed. She had a tail and the end of tail was like a scythe. She had two black wings.
The fourth had four spiderlike claws instead of legs. He was massive. Maybe 6-7 meters in height. Its body was according to its size. It had a huge fat body. He was emitting a disgusting smell. I didn’t even look at his face but he had a scythe at one of his hands.
The fifth one was a sight to see. His face was emotionless and featureless as it could get. He had long dreadlocks. He was a giant too. Around 4 meters in height. His armor was carved in an original way. It was like a work of an excellent artist. Knee parts of armor were carved into skulls. On abdomen there was another face carved which felt like it’s going to talk any minute now. It had a massive sword, maybe same size or bigger than Ulfberht. Rain-guard of the sword had a metal skull carved on it. Cross-guards were like two horns that bended towards the central ridge of the sword. He had a great armor and I was really impressed.

[Knight]: Why are you here?
[Halim]: W-w-we are to claim south lands in the name of King Dar!
[Knight]: We, the noble demons, haven’t invaded the north because of the pact which was signed a millennia and half ago. Pact was signed between the human Kali and Demon Lord Akasha. The only time when humans are allowed into south lands is when the dragon awakens. There are 6 years left until that time. You are too early.
[Halim]: I know not of any pact!
[Knight]: Good, then you and me shall have a duel. If you win you are to do whatever you want and no demon would go against your actions.
General Halim hesitated for a moment.
[Halim]: Demons have attacked and tried to come in our lands many times. What you have to say about that?
(He evaded knight’s duel request masterfully. )
[Knight]: Those were the ones who feared to face the coming dragon and run away. They are not to be referred or called a demon. As they have no pride in them.
[Halim]: We will build the fort here, on this side of bridge to make sure that nobody passes to that side.
[Knight]: What you will do is to go back to where you came from and never come back here again.
[Halim]: You are not the one to tell us what to do!
[Knight]: Let me tell you something else, there is going to be massacre and I think you know who is going to be the butcher.
[Halim]: You have a loud mouth.
[Knight]: I do not and if you feel otherwise I’m more than glad to see how you prove it out.
It was second time the knight was challenging general Halim.
[Halim]: I will let know the king about the pact. I’m a man of peace. My main intention coming here was to stop the attack of the demons. Seems we will be doing what we have been doing for the last millennia and half. Solve your problems out by killing the ones who reach our side of the bridge.
[Knight]: Karan, up to my knowledge there was no wall over our side of the bridge.
[Karan]: Yes my lord. There was none and there will be no walls.
The fourth demon with spider claws came forward and raised its scythe up. Chanted something and a light ball emerged, fire began to surround it and Karan pushed his scythe towards the wall. Lightball flew to wall and smashed on it. Sound of the explosion was terrifying. The wall turned into dust.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
