《For Grass and Glory》Chapter 5

The cramped hallway felt tighter than usual or it might be my size. It had been more than a year since I was last in this damn fairy tale house. They had covered the walls with pictures. Top to bottom. I didn't have to go through them to know none of them were of me. In the past, I had a great relationship with George. Sure, I was tough on him. I might have been a little too tough. But we always talked out our differences, and we helped each other get to our goals. Even if we wanted to murder each other first. I had the pleasure to train him for fifteen years. He had the pleasure to make a lot of money doing what he liked best.
That was until he let his little lad slip into the clutches of a wolf dressed in normalcy. I never cared about the sexual lives of my children as should every parent to keep themselves sane. But he had impregnated the goddamn sheep and she, doing her own magic tricks, had kept the little bugger without telling him. He could have been great. Instead, he stayed mediocre because he was too tired to train and did not make enough to hire a nanny. If that was it, I would have been a little angry but not the hate I oozed every time I saw the witch in the flesh. No, she had to be the overprotective classic borderline nut job that allowed no one to even look at him twice. That was including his father.
I even suspected that she had instigated fights at parties just to get me out of my sons' life. To be the number one. To sit on her pedestal. It was making me mad just to think of the things she had done to arouse my anger. The lows she had gone to. This small bit of revenge, barging into her home, was nothing compared to it. I took the doorknob towards the living room into my hands as I heard her protest.

"Don't you dare go in there!" she shouted behind me. What was she going to do? Call the police? I pressed the doorknob down and opened the door.
Inside was a group of people I had either seen once or twice or was familiar with to a degree that it could be regarded family. Which they were. But that wasn't very important at the moment. As I walked in, little Reynard was about to blow out his seven candles that either the crazy bitch or my flaccid son had placed on a magnificent cake. It was a beautiful scene. The adults surprised looks. The children around Reynard curious who the old man was. Reynard himself beaming. Trying to get up and out of the group that surrounded him. A small smile crept on my face, the sour and angry look that inhabited my face washed off by the childlike enthusiasm in which Reynard was making his way towards me. That and the cake that depicted a grass field with a football on top. The words 0 - 7 in the shape of a scoreboard. The boy had taste, I had to give him that.
I was smiling from ear to ear as little Reynard hugged my fat belly. I patted him on the head. Glad for once I had grown the belly. Otherwise, he would have head-butted my private parts.
"I got your invitation Rey, Thank you," I said to him. My grandpa voice a little rusty. The young child looked up with joy filled eyes and smiled, a front tooth missing.
"No problem grandpa, I thought mommy and daddy might forget again this year so I did it myself! I was really sad when you weren't here last year! But mommy promised me extra dessert so that made it a little better!" He lisped through his missing teeth. The sweet and innocent mind of a child. I looked up. Into the crowd of eyes pointed in my direction. Some were staring at something behind my back where the face of the wench must have come out of the hall.

One pair only looking at his son. My son. George. Did not have the balls to look me in the eyes. My eyes had no such problems. I looked at him for a few seconds before the crowd became restless. Well, the children became restless as they could no longer contain their enthusiasm as the big ass cake stayed uneaten. Oblivious towards the awkward mood. As I noticed I gave Reynard a final rub through his hair and told him to blow out his candles. He looked at me a little suspicious, afraid maybe I would leave again once he was not holding my leg. The lure of cake and attention got the better of him as he rushed back to his place in the spotlight.
I smiled as I saw him blow out the candles and turn his happy face towards me, showing off the gap in his front teeth. A good kid. Deserving better parents. Well, maybe a better parent. I had not yet given up on the dad part.
I wobbled my way towards an empty seat, next to the smiling face of a beautiful woman. She was pointing at me. Then whispering something to the suited guy next to her and they laughed. How rude. As I got a little closer I yelled "So which one is this? CEO? Or still middle management?" I smiled as her eyes grew a little sharper, the smile still on her face but more forceful this time.
As I reach them and sit next to her, I hear the chair groan a little. The beautiful woman turned towards me and whispered in my ear "Dad please behave yourself a little." I looked at her, innocence dripping off my face. She rolled her eyes and whispered "Fine, CEO. But don't mess this up for me!" My smile broadened.
I felt a bit warmer seeing them again. My family. The pus stain stared at me from a corner with angry eyes but didn't approach. That was fine with me. This might work out, I thought as I made myself more comfortable in my chair

Three Hundred Years After The End Of The World
Three hundred years after the end of the world as humanity knew it, the gears of an old plan slowly begin to move again, as a group of self-imposed reincarnators, along with their equally unlikely companions, gather once again to set things right... but does the world they plan to restore need, or even want, their help? Follow the misadventures of an eclectic bunch of genius misfits as they attempt to assemble and fix the world they accidentally devastated in the past. ~~~ Author's note: This is actually the first volume of a novel I wrote nearly a decade ago for the VNDB discussion boards, taking inspiration from the random off-topic ramblings that characterized the golden age of the community. After sevear years and countless rewrites, it is pretty much unrecognizable, but while it is not fit for professional publishing (due to the fact that several fragments and older versions are still out there on various forums and blogs), I decided it is a waste to just let it sit idly on my hard drive forever. As such, I decided to share it somewhere where people could maybe appreciate it, so here it is.
