《Heroes of Errand》Prologue: City Contract

Ken Polstner was working in his inn, business as usual. A group of five adventurers were celebrating signing their contract to help the city. A group of wolves were stopping trade between Tormund and Erend. This party of five would go out, kill the wolves, and allow merchants to continue their business. The group stayed in his inn for a few days now and a few of them a couple of weeks.

He had seen their type before, in fact, he once was their type, young and full of ambition. Ken used to dream of adventure but ended up joining the local army. It wasn't as if he never saw action though, the deep scars on his forearms, which he used as shields, were proof of that. The battles now and then from bandits were a nice way to kill the day. Now that Ken's brown hair and beard were covered with grey hairs and age was catching up, he decided to settle down and open up a respectable business. Home Inn was one of the best inns in Tormund and gathered a lot of the adventuring type. With cheap prices and a lot of drink, it was easy to see why.

Staring at the group, he couldn't help but feel it was a bit unbalanced. They had one person who would stand on the frontline. This person was a young man named Gene. He was a human just like Ken and had a slim athletic build. Standing only about 5'7 he looked strong despite the inexperience in his green eyes. The man had pretty standard features but his hair was a light brown that was short and just slightly longer on the top of his head. Only his knuckles had any sort of sign of battle or training showing that is fist was his primary form of attack. Which you could have guessed by seeing his basic white robes that had a golden trim. Ken guessed that one day that man would be riddled in scars both physically and emotionally. He knew the feeling of failing to protect his ranged support and how easily those types seem to die.

This brought Ken's thoughts to the rest of the party. Everyone else was backline support by the look of things. There was a cute, olive-toned, halfling female named Kira who was a ranger. She carried a large bow despite her short size of 3'0 and rumoured to be some sort of law personnel where she came from, hence her stronger-looking build. Her hair was black and tied into a braid that went down to her lower back. She had dark blue eyes that seemed to always be looking for something. The only defense she had was leather armour that covered her leaf green tunic and navy blue pants.

Then there was the extremely flamboyant half-elf named Fern. The tallest of the group standing about 6'0 or 6'2 if you included the deer-like antlers that he wore on his head and seemed to curved backward along with his long, beautiful white hair. The antlers stopped near the back of his head whereas his hair stopped just after his shoulder blades. His face was soft with stunning pale blue eyes that seemed to have yellow stars dancing in them. He had a tall slender figure and wore green and brown clothes accented with bright purple trim. He had white cloth wrapped around his right arm which held his quarterstaff and silver fur from an animal Ken was unfamiliar with draped over his shoulders. He was a magic user as far as Ken knew since he watched the pretty boy bloom flowers in his hands for many ladies. Perhaps he was the group's utility caster.

Next was the person that Ken thought would be the most important for the team, the cleric. She was a gnome who stood 3'0 and had dark brown skin, similar to that of tree bark. Aliya had green mossy coloured eyes with matching hair that covered her head and ran down her back in a messy manner. A dirty green floppy hat sat loosely over the top of her head. Her most recognizable feature seemed to be her nose that was crooked and looked as if it had been broken several times. Plate mail covered her small and thin body which Ken thought was a wise choice. Enemies that can actually think will target healers first because they keep the people in the front fighting beyond their limits. White bandages wrap up her arms disappearing under the plate mail near her biceps.

Finally, there was the wizard. Long ranged disasters as Ken saw it. Wizards always seemed to either be very docile or extremely moody. Meowlynn stood at around 6'0 to 6'3, it was hard to tell because of her black high heeled boots. She had light brown hair and a gorgeous face with its emphasis being her beautiful hazel eyes and perfect pink lips. She had flawless pale skin, fitting for a high elf like herself. She wore light purple robes and a sexy black corset. A slightly less elegant wizard’s hat sat on top of her head with the same purple as her robes and a black band wrapping around the base of it. It looked like the pointy part might have been charred a bit from an accident. She would be very effective at harming creatures with thick hides or tough armours.

The drinking and celebrating continued for only five more minutes until Kira's voice was heard. "What are you doing!?”

“I uh, hello. My hand must have slipped," said a young woman. She was a young wood elf with slightly tanned skin. Her slender figure was laying on the floor as she had fallen over. Beautiful light brown hair that would probably flow down her back was now covering her face barely hiding her leaf green eyes. The woman stood up and stared at the halfling. Luckily, for the woman, her dark green clothes and leather armour were dark enough to not show a wet mark from the ale she slipped in while trying to pickpocket the shorter woman.

“Must have slipped? Well, my hand must have slipped as well." In a flash, the cute halfling woman placed manacles on the elf. "Now it's time to go to jail.”

“Please, anything but that," the wood elf begged. "What can I do for you? I'll lick your boots if you want."

“Fine, then you have to help us kill wolves tomorrow," Kira demanded. "Also you will be attached to me all night. So what is your name thief?”

“My name is Cilyia," she said weakly. "How does being cuffed to you help me do the job? I'm an archer."

"So am I," remarked the halfling. "We'll have to cuff our feet than to make sure you can use your bow effectively. One more thing, you'll move at my pace if you ever expect to not see the inside of the jail."

"Alright," Cilyia frowned knowing that she couldn't get out of this. "Do we at least get paid for this?"

"No you won't," yelled Kira. "That is not part of the deal for someone who just tried to take my coin!"

"Yes she will get paid," Gene interrupted. "We could always use new allies and besides maybe we can become friends afterward. Not to mention if she has coin she will be less likely to relieve us of ours."

"But she is a thief," pleaded Kira

"Which is a skill we may need in the future. We could go on to do great things like finding lost treasures that will most likely have locked chests. Or sneaking into the den of an organized crime ring," rebutted the monk.

“If you say so," sighed the halfling. "You are the leader after all.”

"Then it's agreed. Let's welcome Ciliya into our team," the newly appointed leader said.

"And what is our group called?", asked Fern. All of the members paused and thought about it.

"The Jellybeans!", shouted Kira. Everybody laughed and agreed it was as good a name as any. The innkeeper couldn't help but think how strange that name was. He supposed it was as good a name as any for a group of fresh adventurers. Ken sent the Jellybeans a round of drinks on the house after he finished cleaning a beer stein. He had a really good feeling about this group and knew he would be seeing more of them.
