《Kenji and Jester》The Man and his imaginary friend

Wandering through the dim and deserted grass field, Kenji could be seen gazing into the light in astonishment. The lights illuminated down like a spotlight on a single hill that has a tea table and two seats. But one was occupied by a lone woman, who sat there with a poised demeanour.
It was the same white-haired woman from earlier.
This wasn't normal, but nothing in the past hours had been normal for Kenji, who started to wonder what the hell was going on. His mind was becoming more restless as the swamp of symbols covered his vision almost like a flashing warning sign as it sensed danger within this mysterious realm.
He then saw the woman waving at him from the table, trying to encourage him to come over. As much as his cautiousness is telling him it's not a good idea to approach the woman, his instinct told him that he won't want to be here nor want to be any part of this.
But it was curiosity that certainly got to him first and there's no way he's turning back now as he turned around to see the field slowly was engulfed by darkness.
Kenji tilted his head in confusion and continued to walk toward the woman.
As he got closer to the women, Kenji felt as if the ground had gotten harder and rougher. He looked down to see that his footprint had caused the grass to die and the dirt to dry up.
The light then started to brighter with every step Kenji made as if he was entering the centre of an illuminated stage.
He could feel the world becoming smaller and smaller as the darkness closed in on him rapidly before stopping on the boundary of the light.
The grassland became nothing but a mist of darkness that was bordering the light that was projected on top of the table like a lamp.
The table was all set up elegantly with the posh-looking white teacups which were only contrasted by a blue rose.
Kenji took another look to the outside, only to hear the voices in his head to not look or turn back. It was as if hundreds of wolves were spying on him from the shadows and he could feel the breeze of unease that triggered the goosebumps which were followed by a powerful shiver down his spine.
"Welcome..." she warmly greeted as Kenji took his seat. "I don't usually get visitors that often, If not at all…" She then took a sip of her tea with a mischievous grin on her face.
Kenji doesn't like the face the woman is making and quickly rushes for answers.
"Where am I?" Kenji demanded with a bamboozle expression. "And who are you?"
The woman then started joyfully giggling at the Asian man's question and gently put down her teacup on the small plate. She then set her right hand on her cheeks with her face now only expressing fascination.
This same enthusiastic wave of the woman was starting to get on Kenji's nerves but he remained disciplined, not wanting any more troubles to occur.
"Oh please, no more game missy." Kenji said, "I just want an explanation. Is it so hard to ask for one good explanation!"
The woman chuckles at Kenji with a passionate smile, "Oh Kenji Gordon, you've always entertained me."
"Oh my god… How do you know me?!" Kenji exclaimed. Kenji was becoming more and more impatient with the woman and her endless mystery. Irritated and annoyed, Kenji now demands answers from the woman. Kenji tried his best to control his rage as he knew that women possess unnatural power that could harm him more than he could do to her.

Kenji took a brief sigh cooling his mind from the building rage as well as calming the swarms of symbols that flashes over his face.
"Please ma'am." Kenji pleads with his soft voice. "Please tell me what's going on."
She giggles once more, "Oh the joy of talking to someone again how I missed it."
The woman sudden excitement had caught Kenji off guard and wasn't expecting such a reaction
"I have to say..." Her body then evaporates into blue smoke then reappears beside Kenji, surprising him to the very core.
The woman quickly but calmly grabbed his left hand and carefully examined it.
Kenji's hand then started to glow blue; there was a blue crystal that was noticeable on the top of his left hand. "I was wondering how you're managing to cope with this. This immense pain of guilt and regret." She then placed her hand on Kenji's head. "But yet you're still willing to go on…such immense strengths for an ordinary man."
"How is this relevant to my question?!" Kenji hastily got off his seat and jerked the woman's hand away from his head. Kenji took a brief moment to take an anxious glance at his left hand before turning back to the woman. "What do you mean by my strength?"
Kenji took another step back to ensure his safety before again demanding the woman for answers. "Again... Who are you? What are you?" Kenji now asked again but with a more anxious tone. "Why is there a crystal in my hand?"
"Those are interesting questions, Kenji." She answered in a serious tone. "I don't even have a name… Eternity is complex, it plays with your mind. Honestly, Kenji Gordon, I'll accept any name if you want. If it makes things easier for you."
"I've honestly lost most of the brainpower to think of any name for you. But you're more of a Jester than anything else."
"Jester huh? Interesting"
"That's not what I meant…"
The woman then cuts Kenji short, "No, no… I like it."
"She is a freak…" Kenji quietly mutters as he watches the woman repeat her newly given name several times in satisfaction, It's almost like she is a lost child who has gotten her first gift.
Kenji's attention then was drawn by the crystal on his left hand, he stared at it with confusion as yet it remained a mystery.
"Hey, err… Jester," Kenji called out the woman by her name.
She jerked her head as her name was called,
"Yes?" she responds.
Kenji held out his left hand, "What is this in my hand? Why is it on me?"
Jester's face of joy was suddenly turned to a more serious look, "That's me, Kenji."
Jester's face of joy was suddenly turned to a more serious look, "That's me, Kenji."
"It's what?!" Kenji's confusion was suddenly turned to shock by the revelation.
"That's my soul all materialised into your hand, if I put it anywhere else it would've been uncomfortable or it could've killed you."
"Could what?!" Kenji exclaimed.
"I'm just joking." she brushes the question aside chuckling. "I mean you're technically dead."
"Sorry?!" Kenji spring forward and grabbed Jester by the shoulders. "What do you mean I'm technically dead? What does that mean?!"
"I saved you Kenji, or else we both would cease to be," Jester answered grimly.

"H-How? Tell ME HOW!" Kenji demanded with all his might, his growing annoyance with the constant mystery was becoming infuriating. The symbols were surrounding his face, constantly list his emotions in Kanji symbols.
Jester only tittered at Kenji's outburst and immediately rematerialised behind him, freeing herself from his grip.
"So many questions, Kenji. So many words flow over your mind, the voices that purge your thoughts like a ghost by your side. Do you do ever get tired of those?"
Kenji paused at those sentences, slowly taking in on what Jester had said. All of those was a perfect description of what Kenji had been experiencing for years now.
"Y-Yes I do." he stuttered. "H-How do you…"
"I could see it as well." She answered immediately.
Kenji was taken aback by the speed of his answer yet he gained more questions to ask. But before he could say a word, Jester spoke.
"For twelve years I've watched you Kenji… I've seen everything that you've seen and experienced. I'd even tried to communicate, but you only took notice of your name and that's it."
Kenji narrows his eyes in suspicion. "You're the voice in my head?"
"Yes." She confidently replied. "But those symbols… Are not mine, I've no idea what they are, but yet some of them looked so familiar. Some even are native to you… It intrigues me."
"They're just words. Maybe I am crazy."
Jester shook her head in disapproval, "No, I don't believe that's the case."
Before Kenji could get a chance to speak, he felt a wet drop of water on his shoulder. Utterly confused, he looked up to see the empty, dark sky. There were no clouds, only the light that was illuminating the current area, he hastily jerks his head around to find the source but he found nothing.
"Oh, dear..." Jester started "It seems like our chat had come to an abrupt end."
"Sorry?" Kenji said
Suddenly a burst of frosty water splashed into Kenji's face, returning him back to reality. Kenji finally was yet again brought back to his consciousness, he coughed and spit out the water that had entered his mouth and nose. His mind was racing with confusion as adrenaline rushed through his body showing fear of drowning.
Wiping the water from his face, Kenji could see the elven hunter and her farmer friend who held a dripping bucket was staring at him as he sneezed out the last bit of water from his body.
Kenji stared at the two with a mix of delight and confusion. Kenji's first attempt to speak was hindered by a retching cough.
"Oh look, he's alive." The elven hunter said with dispassion. "It seems you own me a little something now Adam."
The Farmer immediately handed the hunter her reward as he looked at the boy. Adam has to admit that he didn't feel too pleasant having the boy back on his farm not after what he did. But something also hinted on his face, the same face of terror and confusion that he remembers when he first met his daughter.
Adam walked up to Kenji and held out his hand, offering the Asian man help to which Kenji accepted.
"You may have caused me trouble, young man but I am a very passionate man."
Kenji nodded with guilt, "I'm sorry for what I've done. I was not myself there. I was so confused and lost."
"Yeah, lost in the middle of hell." Melody chuckles as she continues counting the money.
"Please take no interest in her, Mr… What is it again?"
"Gordon. Kenji Gordon sir." Kenji held out his hand to which Adam accepted and shook it.
"Kenji Gordon huh? Are you from Albion by any chance?" Adam asked.
Right there Kenji's mind went blank as he was unsure how to proceed.
In a panic, Kenji nodded. "Yes, yes I am."
Adam nodded. "I see you and Miss Westwood are similar in a way. No wonders she's soft on you."
Melody laughed, "I didn't go soft, he just amused me so much that I decided that he's worth keeping for now."
"Ok…Then." Kenji quietly mutters.
Adam lightly chuckles at the elf before turning his attention back to Kenji. "Mr Gordon."
"Please call me Kenji, don't feel good when anyone calls me mister."
"All right, Kenji." Adam nodded. "I was wondering if you have a place to stay?"
"Obviously no. I'm kind of lost right now." Kenji replies.
"Ok…emm do you have a job?"
Kenji shook his head. "No, I don't. I got nothing."
"Do you know how to farm?" Adam asked.
Kenji again shook his head. "Not at all. Why?"
Adam chuckles, "Maybe you could work for me. You pay me back for what you did and I give you a place to stay, how does that sound? If not, the road is dead ahead where you could go and rot begging on the road."
Kenji sighs in defeat, knowing he didn't have a choice. It neither stays here and does whatever the farmer asks or tries to survive in this mysterious new world with very little knowledge. Kenji could try but he knew he wouldn't survive a week in these unknown lands.
He faced the farmer with a dispassionate stare, "I think we have a deal, Mr... err. Sorry, I forgot your name.
"Adam Blanc." The farmer replied.
"Ok, Mr Blanc. Thank you."
Watching Adam walking back into his house, Melody approaches Kenji with a joyful smirk. "You know he's going to work you like hell."
Kenji paid no attention to the elven hunter, not wanting to bother with yet another conversation with anyone right now. Kenji was taking the moment to refresh his mind from the experience he just had.
Is this his life now? Is there anything he could do? What can he do?
More questions constantly popped through his mind in his dazed before the elven hunter snapped her fingers close to his face.
"Hey, where are you, listening boy?" Melody asked in an authoritarian tone.
Kenji jolted his head and faced the hunter, both confused and shocked. "I guess this is my life now."

Life of a Core
After a disembodied voice had told him he was what amounted to an exceptionally talented rock, it had been hard to not let it go to his non-existent head. Until, random chance had decided to give him a square kick in the minerals. Which had in turn forced him to fend for himself in an unknown land, all while he attempted to make sense of his place in the world. Truthfully though, all he had really wanted to do from the start had been to bury himself a hundred feet below the ground and be left to his own devices. Yet, for one reason or another, nobody ever seemed willing to leave the dungeon-building core alone long enough to actually make one. Each chapter will average around two to three thousand words, the release schedule is still a WIP but you should expect the first six chapters to be released over the next six days. This is planned out as a dungeon building fiction, but don't expect it right off the bat! The story is a depiction of the everyday adventures (alongside an overarching plot) of what I imagine a dungeon core would experience when thrust into a random environment where everything and everyone tried to covet or eat him. I also really enjoy reading the comments and reviews people leave and would love to get some reader involvement with the story itself, likely through polls at the end of each chapter. I hope you enjoy my story! (If you feel like some of the characters seem familiar, you may have read some older work I wrote a while back under a different account. If you happen to be one of my old readers and recognize the similarities, I'm happy to have you back!)

This is the story of an expanding empire, not understanding its reach, unfulfilled by its goals, and misled by its gods. It follows a group of travellers as they try to expand the empire, and probe the edges of its control. It is set in a world in which power is directly connected to origins, ancestry, and the gods of a culture. It examines the effects of conflict on a people when they can’t be disconnected from their surroundings, and thus true mobility is not possible. The first book will be focusing on a group trying to explore and settle the lands east of their empire. Deciding that a new push is needed, groups are being funded to take and farm the near-empty land, and this group of four is heading out ahead of many of the settlers. The four - Sojo, Mirrel, Eyn, and Brehen - hope to find and chart something of importance in a vast, nearly unexplored landscape, and bring the knowledge back to make their fortune. This story will be focusing on the people that make, inspire, and ultimately shape the course of an empire's ambitions. It is hosted at https://thecorinthianman.wordpress.com/ and updates Wednesdays.
