《Hollow Moon》Chapter 9.2 Finn

Fin:

The knock shook the door in it’s frame. It sounded like a policeman’s knock; authoritative and mildly impatient. Finn walked swiftly down the hall, shutting the door to Nyssa’s room and kicking one of her t-shirts under a seat as he went. It was barely six in the morning so he tried to act sleepy and disgruntled, as if he’d been woken up by the knocking. It wasn’t hard, he was sleepy and disgruntled.

“What do you want?” he asked, not bothering to open the door. The only response was a louder, sharper pounding against the wood. The door couldn’t take much more of this. It wasn’t exactly new and from what he understood about the People, a flimsy wooden barrier wouldn’t contain one of them for long. Whatever was on the other side was coming in and there was nothing Finn could do to stop it.

Finn cracked open the door as much as he could while keeping the chain lock firmly in it’s slider. He peered out. All he could make out was a shock of neat, dark hair against pale skin. Whatever it was looked humanoid at least. Finn wasn’t sure that made much difference. It could probably slaughter him before he could do much more than blink.

“Let me in, Finn.” The thing outside the door knew his name.

“I’m sorry, visiting hours are between four and six.” The smart ass comment slipped out before Finn could wonder whether or not sassing a potentially insane mythical creature was wise.

“Where is the girl?” Damn, Nyssa was right. He was here for her.

“I’m flattered that you think I am that popular with the ladies, but unfortunately, it’s just me at the moment.” Finn leaned against the wall to the left of the door, out of the way of the man’s line of fire if he did make it through. From that position, he could see whoever it was through the crack between door and the door jam.

“Also, who the hell are you?” It seemed a valid question under the circumstances.

The man, if you could call him that, let out a grunt, equal parts irritation and impatience. Finn could only see a vague outline through the gap but he saw him raise one fist and bring it down smartly on the point where the chain was fixed to the door. The chain broke with a small ping and the door swung open, banging sharply against the door stop.

“Bloody hell,” Finn swore. He let off a few more uncomplimentary - and impressively creative - phrases.

Before the door could swing close, the dark haired man stepped into Finn’s apartment and breezed right past him rolling his eyes heavenward as he went. The breaking and entering took about three seconds and was done with such ease that Finn figured the tall stranger had been taking it easy on him.

“Okay,” Finn trailed after the man who was now methodically going through all the rooms in the small apartment, “that was awesome, but did you really need to break my door?” The stranger made his way to the kitchen.

“You didn’t let me in,” his intruder pointed out in a reasonable tone.

“Fair enough.” The dark stranger crouched by a chair and pulled out the shirt Finn kicked there earlier. “Wait, not fair enough; what the hell are you doing in my apartment?” He only grunted and presented Finn with his broad back disdainfully. He pressed the t-shirt against his face, inhaling deeply.

“Dude,” Finn whispered, slightly awed, “that’s so weird.” Bewildered by the alien actions of the stranger, it struck Finn that he was actually standing in a room with something that wasn’t even human. His brain did an odd sideways shudder away from the thought.

The man was now searching the pantry, as if Nyssa would be crouched between the beans and rice. Finn’s weak protests continued to be largely ignored. The stranger had found the large plastic mixing bowl discarded in the sink and was fixating on it, tuning Finn out entirely.

So you get to see a little bit more of Finn's character here. You can imagine what he and Nyssa were like growing up. They must have given their mother hell with their smartassed comments. Originally Finn wasn't very sarcastic or smart assed but then came the 'visiting hours are between four and six' comment and I realised that growing up with Nyssa, Finn would have to have developed are serious sense of humor to deal with her antics. Anyway, enjoy.

Next chaper is Del, and you get to see a little bit more about how the Caul's gifts work. I go much more in depth about mind reading and it is lots of fun.
