Sean’s eyes slowly widened, he had hit the jackpot!

“But what was up with these prices?” Sean scratched the back of his head. He had nearly died the other day getting 500 experience, and all it amounted to was a single stamina potion from the store? It was a tragedy indeed.

“…Nothing useful here either, it seems.” Sean sighed.

With the balance he had on hand, he could at least purchase a random skill book along with an introductory lecture book from the store, however neither of these items would get him out of his current predicament. Sean was still lost beneath these tunnels with no way out.

..

Ding! Gained ‘Divine Serpent’s Flickering Tongue’ skill book.

Ding! Gained ‘Dao Lecture Book’.

..

Sean purchased the items anyway.

Divine Serpent’s Flickering Tongue

[Martial Skill] – Mortal Grade

“One will to raise mountains; One will to summon orchards.

One will to rally armies; One will to define an era.

Even mountains weather with time, even orchards stave way to new life.

Even armies falter, and legacies become long forgotten.

Only my will… is immortal.”

Learn Skill

Yes / No

[This skill looks pretty damn strong.]

“Nice.” Sean was quite pleased with what he got.

[Too bad the description gives no indication as to what it does.]

Sean tapped the “yes” icon on the “learn skill” menu. With a name like “Divine Serpent’s Flickering Tongue”, the skill had to at least be somewhat decent.

As for the cultivation manual he had purchased…

Dao Lecture Book

[Cultivation Manual] – Mortal Grade

“Proceed on the path of cultivation with this

Introductory level course.”

[Approx. 2 hours: 0%]

Use Item

Yes / No

Sean decided he would save it for later.

The “approx. 2 hours” clause in the item’s description made him wary of using the lecture book in a place where his safety was not guaranteed.

What if using the item required him to fall into a comatose state for two hours? He would be left defenseless in the middle of an underground tunnel, even a passing mole rat could beat him within an inch of his life then and there. Sean had read enough Xianxia novels to know that sitting in a lotus position for three months pondering the dao of a bee traveling in an elliptical arc wasn’t very practical.

Sean pocketed the manual and got up off the ground.

If he couldn’t find a way out… what if he could dig himself a way out? He could use the spatial ring from the store as a garbage can for depositing dirt and debris. As for his method of tunneling, Sean dug into his pocket and pulled out the mandrake.

A glimmer appeared in his right eye, and the young man’s face spread into a wide grin.

下一章

Kǒudài Fāng Jīn pulled out a parchment of papyrus. This scroll had been bequeathed to him by the sect patriarch, and was a divine treasure that recorded the location the ancestor’s burial grounds.

Ten thousand years ago, the Devil Blood Devil Sect’s great progenitor, Mao Wu Ze Dong, not to be confused with the glorious chairman of the people’s republic, Mao Zedong, once sealed away a supreme and heaven-defying treasure in an undisclosed location.

A series of complicated arrays were set up to where a special map was required to navigate through the ever-shifting and ever-changing tunnels that connected the massive underground expanse.

Kǒudài Fāng Jīn happened to have that very same map. Now of course, you the reader should not question why a map is required to get to an ancestor’s inheritance when it is evident that a constantly shifting environment would, in fact, negate the usefulness of having a map first place. The truth of the matter is, not even the author knows why, so just go with it. Kǒudài Fāng Jīn placed a finger on the map, highlighting his present location.

According to the parchment, the heart of the maze was only a short walk away. The other devil sect practitioners were busy dealing with the three cockroaches that somehow managed to worm their way into the ancestor’s tomb. Even if those rats managed to escape, it would have been impossible for them to happen upon the inheritance by chance.

Kǒudài Fāng Jīn threw off his black mantle and descended a flight of marble stairs. There was no longer a need to identify as a devil sect practitioner. Restoring the sect to its former glory? Ha, don’t make me laugh! The road to the apex is a path full of lies and deceit, of imminent backstabbing and countless betrayals, what loyalties would I, a two-dimensional antagonist, have to anyone else other than myself?!

At last, the young man had arrived at a stone door bearing an inscription above the handle. This door was a pathway that led to the center of the tomb, where the inheritance laid alongside the progenitor’s bones. There was a powerful runic inscription layering the door, and anyone who dared to open this door would immediately get caught up in a powerful illusory array. Kǒudài Fāng Jīn was not one to back down. The young man readily grasped the handle and pulled open the door without a second’s notice.

In an instant, Kǒudài Fāng Jīn found himself standing atop a lake that seemed to span one hundred million miles across. On the other side of the lake was a single lotus petal laying atop a black coffin. The youth had no recollection of his past self or state of mind, he did not know why he was there or what he was looking for; the only thing he felt was an innate desire, a need to cross the lake and pick up that lotus petal. Each step along the body of water was an entire world unto itself.

With one step, Kǒudài Fāng Jīn went past a dilapidated farmhouse sitting atop an empty field of grass, past an ocean teeming with life, past entire provinces and warring kingdoms. He arrived at a mountain range overlooking a billion miles of untamed wilderness, and beyond a grand pavilion encompassing an entire continent. With just a single step, he had experienced even the far reaches of an entire world.

This pattern continued for what seemed like ten billion lifetimes, with each step crossing a new boundary, a different world of similar size and stature than the last. When an eternity had passed, and when the old universe had ended and a new one was born, Kǒudài Fāng Jīn finally arrived at the lone lotus sitting atop a weathered coffin. The young man, with no identity or recollection of his past self, picked up the lotus and looked at it with a wistful expression.

And just like that, he was back in the underground tunnel.

Two hours had passed since Kǒudài Fāng Jīn opened the door. As vivid memories of imaginary shorelines and distant worlds began to fade from his memory, Kǒudài Fāng Jīn could once again establish a foothold in the present reality. His time in the illusory array had taken its toll on him; he had experienced a trillion lifetimes over. The trauma was no longer there, but his mind was still in a weakened state. Beyond the door, he could see a light at the end of the tunnel. The innermost sanctum was only a short distance away. Gritting his teeth, Kǒudài Fāng Jīn mustered all the willpower he had left in his body to drive himself forward.

When Kǒudài Fāng Jīn entered the tomb, he was met with an unexpected sight. Standing some thirty odd meters away was a young man with his back towards Kǒudài Fāng Jīn. The youth was busy rummaging through a golden chest in the center of the room, and had not yet taken notice of his presence. Kǒudài Fāng Jīn couldn’t believe his eyes, someone other than him had actually managed to get into the inheritance grounds.
