《The Rising of a God》Challenging the gods

Deep in thoughts we were already arriving at the place we were supposed to be. I could already tell, because I couldn't sense a single living being in the area. There were up to ten houses and in the center was a church in the middle of them.

"There they are. The church. They are definitely in there. Almost not possible to not sense their blood lust." Jack almost looking seriously looked straight at the church.

He didn't waste a single moment before rushing towards the building without giving me time to react.

"Bud, I'll be fine. This time it will only be me and these gods in a fight. Don't worry about me... but you don't do it anyways so" he got off topic and just continued running towards the building with a serious gaze on his face.

Something I couldn't understand at that point was going on with Jack. But what could it have been? To be honest, I really didn't know anything at this point.

He always forced me to come with him in order to see him fighting while I was just sharpening my daggers or hiding my god from the fights.

Might have been that he had enough protecting my useless ass. Couldn't blame him for that. In fact I was one of the most useless partners someone could have.

Sometimes I helped Jack when I hold a god back with my dagger, but they were definitely lower class and he always had to make the last move on them.

I also dismounted from my horse. When I dismounted, I also took the reins of Jack's horse at the same time and tied them both to a nearby post.

It was still a clear and calm morning and although my partner was on his way to fight a battle between divine beings, it was still very quiet. While waiting for me I started investigating some of the nearby houses, because there shouldn't be a problem with that.

All of these houses looked almost the same. Rotten down with broken roofs and all of them had quite a lot of holes. Then I recognized something. There was this one house, clearly visible because it was far outside, it had no mentionable devastations.

Why? All of the houses had something that was wrong with them and this didn't had a little thing. Windows and doors were working and there were also no holes or other striking things that I saw.

I didn't had the nerves to think about it now. That's why I backed off from it and made my way back to the horses.

When I arrived there again I could already notice unusual things. Even the horses were no longer behaving as normal. Normally they would lie down or graze. But now they seemed very agitated and as if they wanted to disappear immediately.

Of course, I tried to calm them both down, but that only made them more nervous, so I untied them. They immediately ran away, but that was no longer the biggest problem.

"I could have seen that, you idiot." I was annoyed at my own stupidity while I took out my whetstone and the new dagger I got a while ago.

Even though it was completely black, it shimmered in the sun as if it were mad out of gold. Indulging in dreams I didn't recognise what was happening in that vary moment. The church was swallowed by flames.

It only came through to me because I somehow felt the warmth against my body and a flicker reflected on my dagger. Immediately I started looking up in the direction where Jack went just a couple of minutes ago.

There were only flames. Nothing other than flames. What is with Jack? Did he really lost to them?

"It can't be. He only is a decent mage but I know that he would never lose to three lower gods. He isn't that kind of a person that takes things like these lightly" I thought to myself. Still looking in the direction where he ran while being stuck to the ground.

It really felt like a dream to me in that moment, but then I saw something stumbling out of the building.

It was Jack!

Making my way to Jack I started understanding how bad the situation really was. He was seriously injured. No jokes, just pure pain I could see in his eyes. They screamed for his family.

"Jack, what just happened? Why are you so torn down? Tell me now, old man!" I yelled at him while supporting him and we moved away from the church.

"Ah, you can also lose your cool I guess, that is pretty interesting..." stumbling to me with a voice that was getting lighter with every word.

Jack was covered in blood. I could see a deep hole in his right arm that I couldn't cover or support with anything.

When I saw him laying down there on the ground I knew that the time was coming for him. Him only reaching out for the sky in order to somehow connect with his family in his last moments.

But I couldn't accept it. Him dying here. Killed by some weak gods. That wasn't the point he was working for. What was I supposed to? Let him die here? No, of course not. But how would I be able to save him?

"Bud, I'll be fine. Don't have that worrysome face on you. You aren't a person like that. Just don't give me the feeling that you really liked me in my last moments... haha" he told me that with a little forced smile on his face.

He didn't want to go now, but fate told him to end here. He kind of accepted it.

I turned around without saying any last word.

*POV: Jack*

Even in my last moments he won't tell me anything about his real feelings for me and the world. What a stupid young boy he is, but whatever. His choice to let an old man like me die here in the sand.

And there was again this same feeling from before. Something dark crawling up my back but this time I was able to see Will in front of me. He turned his back to me and looked down to the ground while walking in the direction of the church.

"NOO, STOP IT WILLIAM. I KNOW YOU ARE STRONG AND EVERYTHING BUT YOU REALLY CAN NOT HANDLE THEM. DON'T EVEN TRY IT. THEY WILL RIP YOU APART." I shouted at him with everything I had left, but he didn't turn around. He went on without hesitating even for a moment.

And there he went. Looking like a useless bug just looking for revenge he could never get. Started closing my eyes I was only able to see him being consumed by the flames.

Everything felt so light. There wasn't this dark creature anymore that was around me and terrorized me. I felt something warm that embraced me. Was this death?

This wasn't like people always told me. I couldn't even see the people I loved for one last time in my life. What was this crappy bullshit? That's how life was supposed to end for me?

"Then I will live with that I guess... haha" saying that while I was dying.

I took my last strength to open my eyes for a last time and all I could see wasn't just the flames. The red and overwhelming flames turned into blue turquoise lightnings that were covering the whole horizon.
