《The Oddity: The One Who Does Not Belong》Chapter 9: Instructions

I was worried that she wouldn't accept my request but it turned out just fine.

She slowly reads the letter, every now and then her eyes wander back, to reread a sentence. With one hand she lightly holds it with her thumb and index finger while her other hand guides her eyes along the paper.

"I think the content is good but..."

She hesitates.

"Is it my handwriting?"

She purses her lips and nods.

"Then... could you write it for me?"

I know that she has no obligation to help me and I wouldn't blame her for choosing not to but I'd appreciate it.

"Okay. Sure. I'll write it for you."

"Thanks."

We move across the room to the librarian and ask for paper and a pen.

I tell him that I'm writing a letter to my sister and a glint appears in his eyes.

He happily gives me a pen and paper and wishes me luck.

Nice that he seems to value family.

Blue hair and I sit down at a table next to each other. In front of us lies the letter and with pen in hand she's diligently copying it down. I just watch as the pen sweeps across the paper leaving letters in it's wake.

After a minute, she finishes.

She slides the paper to me, I pick it up and gently fold it evenly three times and slip it into my pocket.

"Thanks for your help. Your handwriting is much better than mine." I say.

"N-no problem."

Her ears turn a light shade of red and she shyly turns away.

So. What happens next?

"What kind of book are you looking for?"

"I was just looking for a good story."

A good story huh. Most of the books that I've read were for martial arts and countering magic. She most likely isn't looking for a suggestion anyways.

"Well, if you're looking for something specific don't hesitate to ask the librarian."

"Yeah."

Awkward. Well, I've accomplished my first mission, should I go send the letter now or continue studying exorcisms? AH! I could ask Carlyle and the group if they know any exorcists or if they're one themselves.

No, wait. It's better if I find one myself. If they know that I need an exorcist things could turn sour.

Yeah, it's better to find my own. Still I should check out a few of these books just in case they have something useful.

After checking out three books I took my leave.

I planned to take them to my room and then go to the post office to send my letter.

I open the plain door and enter my room. I set the books down on top of my nightstand. I pick up the envelope and put the letter in, out of the corner of my eye I spot the clothing I wore last night. When should I meet with the group again? I'll go tonight and get that cleared up, they (except for Carlyle) shouldn't be able to contact me. Alright, I'll send the letter first then change into the clothes.

But first, I should take inventory. I pull back my long sleeves and hold out my arms over the bed, I silently activate the bracers. From them, a bunch of throwing knives and a few smoke bombs fall out including a single steel staff. I had gotten these enchanted bracers from my master as a gift, he had obtained them after clearing a large labyrinth.

The knife count is twenty and the bombs six, ten knives and three bombs for each bracer. I pick them up one by one and move them to the bracer where they're absorbed.

I grab the clothes and leave. On the way I hid them inside an alleyway.

The post office on the outside didn't seem large, it also looked quite plain. I wouldn't have been able to tell it apart from the other buildings had it not been for the sign outside. The inside, contrast to what the outside looked like, was quite big and nicely furnished. Sturdy wooden chairs lined the walls with paintings of messengers hung above them. I walked to the lady at the front desk, a large glass pane separated us.

I handed her the letter from the small half circle opening and asked her how long it would take for them to send it. She said it would take about two weeks by horseback. I nodded and left.

I changed into the black clothing and hid my uniform in the same spot.

After walking for a while I made it to the hideout from yesterday.

The sun is still up, if I had to guess it would be around six. Fall is coming soon.

I continue inside with my guard up.

"Oh? What are you doing here thirteenth?"

My head instantly turns. Allan is sitting on a barrel, Garret, Hannah, and Anna are also seated.

"I just had some questions."

"Ask away."

"Is there something that I should do as a 'member'? Also, what kind of group are we? What do we do?"

Allan raises an eyebrow.

"Well, we work for the city, kinda like guards but a more specialized force. We patrol around the city sometimes, we do some infiltration missions against underground crime organizations, and we sometimes get tasked with killing or capturing criminals. What you can do tonight is patrol around."

"How long would I have to do that for?" I ask.

"Just do it until ten." Garret says.

"Got it. Will I be doing it alone?"

"Nope. Tonight it's our watch."

Anne waves at me.

It's nine now, I've been jumping from rooftop to rooftop looking over some parts of the city. At night the marketplace is all lit up with lanterns, their orange glow illuminates the buildings around them.

Currently I'm sitting down next to Anna.

"What were you guys doing in the storehouse earlier?" I turn to face her.

"We were discussing our next mission and yours."

"Mine?"

"Yeah. After you left Carlyle wanted us to give you a mission, he said that since you're under his watch now he wanted you to work for the group."

"What kind of mission is it?"

"We haven't decided yet. Carlyle said that he didn't want to put you into too much danger yet so you're exempt from missions that deal with the underground."

She sat down and sighed.

"How strong are you anyway? Hit me with some magic."

"Is it alright? Shouldn't we focus on patrolling right now?"

"It's not that important, the guards can handle the normal stuff. If I can get a grasp of your skills we'll have an easier time picking an appropriate task."

"I understand but my magic isn't very powerful."

"That will be known after the attack. Okay, now hit me with a spell."

She erects a barrier around her.

Should I limit the power on my fireball? No, it's important to get a task of my skill level or higher. It's a good way for me to improve.

"Here it comes, [Fireball]!"

I expend more mana on this one than I did during practice at school.

Her barrier easily stands up against the attack.

"..."

Her stance is relaxed and she's squinting at me, probably wondering if I actually tried with that last attack.

"How much mana did you put into it?"

"Much more than I usually do."

She has a shocked expression.

"I-I see...it might take a while for us to find a proper job for you."

"I understand. My magic is lacking but my close combat skills are better than average."

"Oh! So that's how it is. Unfortunately the tasks we'll give you might have you deal with those far more experienced in close combat as well. If they're intermediate or advanced in the magic department then I don't see how you'll be able to handle them. No offense." she says this while giving me a sympathetic look.

"None taken."

Getting close to the magic casters wouldn't be a problem with my ability but it would be best to keep it a secret from the other members. It's my trump card just in case I need to escape.

"Let's get back to patrolling around."

"Yeah."

She gets up and in an instant disappears from my sight.
