《Delving Into the Unknown》Chapter 4

Aileen went through the all of the medical supplies she had on hand and explained to Logan what to use them for. Despite her initial annoyance with being saddled with Logan, he found himself comfortable with her. "I'm going to write out a guide here for you on how to use everything. It's better if you can practice, but studying it helps, too." Aileen opened the center drawer that was in the wall behind the table in her cabin. She pulled a pistol from the drawer, handing it to Logan. "Do you know how to use one?" He nodded. His foster father had one in the house along with a rifle. "Good. You''ll need it on this voyage. You would do well to learn to use other weapons, too. I use this one." The middle-aged woman held up a wooden bat that was about a foot long. "It's not exciting, but it's effective. You ought to speak to Martin about getting a rifle from him, too." Aileen sat down at her table to start writing the guide for him.

"When did you get that tatoo?" Aileen asked him without looking up from her writing. Logan's eyes shifted to the markings over his heart. It was a royal blue flower with ten elongated petals with pointed tips and a star in the center. "I don't know. I've always had it. My parents said it was there when they adopted me." "Hm. You don't look Irish, that's for sure." She was right. Logan looked nothing like the people he grew up with. He always thought that he might've been born in Libya, since it wasn't too far from Ireland. Unlike his foster parents, Logan's skin was a tawny brown and his eyes were a deep coffee brown. His hair was an ebony black. "No, I don't know my birth parents. But those people were still my family, blood doesn't matter." Aileen hummed thoughfully. "Yes, I agree. No one can replace them."

Aileen handed him the leatherbound journal with her notes she made. "Here. It will help to study every night before bed, do not lose it. Follow me. It's time to start dinner, and all of these other miscreants are shite at cooking." Aileen opened the door to go out onto the main deck, gesturing for him to follow.

Charlie waved to them when they walked out onto the main deck. "Hello there!" "Keep up, don't get distracted." Aileen and Logan both waved back at the teenager while walking to a set of stairs going down into the ship. "This down here is the kitchen and the food storage. This is also where the rest of us sleep." Hammocks were hanging in between wooden beams. "You can choose one of the open hammocks later tonight." All of a sudden, Logan blurted out a question. "Do you really think Atlantis exists?" Aileen stopped, reaching into one of the barrels to pull out a bag. "There's no way to know for sure unless we look. But I hope it doesn't." Logan blinked in confusion. Why would she wish that? "Why do you say that?" "I've seen what greed does to people. Haven't you?" Her words were like a punch in the gut. Aileen was blunt, but she was right. People always suffered due to the greed of those in power. "Now lets get started. Pay attention as we go along. I hate repeating myself."

"Captain, we're gaining on them!" The lookout called down from his perch in the crow's nest. Eris's lips twitched upwards into a cat-like grin. "Martin, go check on the cannons. Make sure everything's prepared. How long until we reach them?" "About a few hours!" "Keep up the good work, Charlie! We'll have supplies soon." "Aye aye, captain!" Martin lit his pipe, tossing the used match to the side. "Are we gearing up for a fight here, captain?" There was a dark yet hopeful glint in his eye as he stared Eris down. "But of course. There are things we need on that ship. And we must punish the perpetrators for the attrocious massacre at our favorite stop. A ship like that won't go down without a fight, so be prepared." "That is my specialty. I was a mercenary for twenty years before I met you." "Yes, I value your experience. Now go check the cannons as I asked. I need to go to my cabin to prepare some things. Simon, I trust you to keep an eye on everything. And please make sure I'm not disturbed." "Yes, ma'am. Should I go tell Aileen to be ready?" "Yes, that's a good idea. It will be a few hours before we are in range to attack the ship, but it won't hurt to make sure she and our new companion are prepared. We'll attack after dark."
