《Deviation》By Stumbles and Falls...

Devastation and tragedy are often close bedfellows, even more so on Fracture. It is as though the two are constantly hate fucking each other, one always trying to top the other, but all they really manage to do is destroy everything around them. The only good thing about this environment of danger and strife is that it is uniquely suited to forge the survivors into weapons of obscene power.
You see my dear friends, I have watched the history of Fracture many times over from many different angles, and it has a rather odd habit. There will be tragedy after tragedy, until someone or something rises from the ashes. Then that someone or something will carve a new history of destruction into the surface causing far, far more death than most every prevent. One could say that if they didn't rise from the ashes the world might be a safer place. But then if it wasn't so destructive, I wouldn't find it so entertaining to watch.
This makes Fracture a dream for anyone like Stygian, who desperately needs to stabilize their existence through violence. Which is why said murderous insect, was so unhappy. Not only had Vae ordered it to hold off on metamorphosing for a while, but she also had frequently been locking the deväk in a room with her trying to teach Stygian how to read. Vae had been at it for several weeks now and progress was slow. While yes, the deväk in question had a highly advanced brain for a deväk. That was just for a deväk.
Fortunately, for the inattentive student and its frustrated teacher, learning to read wasn't all that it had been doing. During the first week of down time Stygian had molted his shell and grew a replacement. While the deväk's old chitin would have eventually grown to fit it, Vae didn't want to waste any time. As soon as the new shell was hard enough to take a hit Vae also started sending Stygian out to balance its gene pools properly, and so that it could get some food. Since it had eaten so many extra desecrator ants, it would need to make up the difference as best as it could. Meaning that it needed seventy four total mudlings, and one hundred twenty four total host-worms, before Vae would consider letting the deväk metamorphosis. The frequent outings had raised Stygian to combat level 9, it also helped that Vae was making it train daily with an instructor in the art of wielding pointy sharp things.
Path of the Spear Level 1
Long is the road to mastery, but those who stay dedicated will become unstoppable. Spears are more comfortable in your grasp, bonus dexterity when using spear-type weapons. Bonus will increase with levels. Current bonus +2.5%
Which made the act of using heavy spears, the same kind as the demon bone spear, go from fun, to simply delightful. Unfortunately, swinging spears around was not the limit of its training. Vae was also having the deväk train it's physical modifiers up as well. Unconsciously, the deväk had been drawing on both the magical attributes and the little physical prowess it possessed. It was an easy thing to do, but hard to stop doing. The benefit of which was for example if you used attributes to lift a boulder you might gain an attribute bonus, but if you did it with raw physical strength you'd increase your modifier. So Vae or another pixie would debuff Stygian so it could train physical modifiers for a while. Lifting heavy things, running, juggling and jumping, trained strength, agility, dexterity, and surprisingly acrobatics respectively. Acrobatics wasn't as easy as it sounded to unlock, there was a lot of jumping and balancing with heavy things, and only when those actions had started to feel normal did it unlock.

Congratulations, new attribute unlocked Acrobatics(Acr)
Contributes to the height of jumping, the speed of climbing, flying, and most other types of vertical movements. It also affects balance, making stealth and other foot work skills more effective.
Acr: 1
Which didn't sound super useful to the deväk, but according to Vae those proficient in vertical combat were exponentially more dangerous. Vae devoted much of her free time to explaining things about the world to Stygian. Like the point of physical modifiers. According to Vae attributes didn't affect physical characteristics, as in they don't change the way you look. In other words you could have a million points in strength and still have wet noodles for arms. So someone with a ninety percent strength modifier would be far more physically fit than someone who had a ninety strength attribute. While the attribute would make someone far stronger than they ought to be, the modifiers could raise insane stats even higher.
While the deväk wasn't exactly bursting with questions, when ever it thought of something Vae would go out of her way to make sure the simpleton would understand her. Which was very deliberate on her part, since she was trying to unlock the intelligence and wisdom stats. These would greatly help the deväk especially if it was true that a metamorphosis would increase all unlocked attributes. So Vae was doing her damndest to nurture Stygians curiosity.
Unfortunately, this was slowed by more than just the moronic nature of the several week old infantile bug. Technically Stygian should be about as developed as a four year old human, but the soul corruption was limiting it mentally. So whenever Vae had amassed enough energy she would create a new barrier outside the previous one so the little bug could reclaim more of its soul. It was slow going at first, but things were slowly getting better. Stygian would be rid of the corruption in another month, though metamorphosis would probably shorten that time. This however was not the most limiting factor. No, what truly set things back was the deväk's new sin. Being genderless, and from a species that reproduced through eating corpses, lust affect it quite differently. So the parameters for the sin were skewed towards a favorite past time of Stygians ancestors. Talking.
Humans are very much social creatures, and every aväk loves talking, about anything and everything. This perfect shit storm is where Stygian picked up the habit of liking the sound of it's own voice. However, its lust did more than just make it want to talk, the little bug would be struck dumb by any charisma higher than its own. One could say that it was analogous to a dwarven women trying to sleep with a giant; shock and awe follow quickly by doubt and disappointment.
So several weeks passed, long enough for the age of our firmly shelled friend, to change from weeks to a month. In this time the pixies continued their expansion downward. On the evening of Stygians rather lackluster performance against the invading bugs and mudlings, the pixies managed to raise a magic enclosure to hide the emanations of their magic. As well enough crude stone buildings for everyone to live in relative comfort. The accommodations were no where close to their old clan buildings, but they were a start. Being the embodiment of their racial stereotypes, the earth pixies worked near tirelessly to improve the standard of living in their decrepit cave.
Sure enough it went from shallow murder hole, to a claustrophiles wet dream in the few weeks since its founding. Through their magical excavation the earth pixies discovered a lantern rock deposit. Also commonly known as torch stones, these rocks would light up in the presence of high ambient magic. Extremely useful for adventurers and underground citizens alike. The stones were arranged in a tasteful chandelier like pattern near the ceiling. Unlike most races, who expanded settlements outward, pixies preferred going either up or down. Hint hint, the reason why sounds kinda like bwings and rhymes with sings.
It's their wings.
Since the pixies had gone through the trouble of encasing their ceiling in magic insulating steel, down was the better option. This had to be done slowly so more steel could be layered outside of the new sections of expansion. It seemed like the council of pixies had plans to make this more than just a refuge. They wanted to make it in to a thriving city, going so far as to mark out a section for a teleport array. All of that seemed like a superbly bad idea by the deväks standards, but hey what did it know. Coincidentally, this plan would lead to the inevitable fall of the clan, but in about 100 years. However, this would just be a fake coup to rebranding the whole clan and distance themselves from the mistakes of the past. Pixie society was quite strange.
The deväk had overheard the council discuss the plans for their expansion while it was waiting for Vae to take it hunting. The deväk was relieved to note that Vae at least seemed to have misgivings about the plan for the city. However, since it was nigh impossible to leave the Lost Woods and come back to the same spot the array was the only way to reliably establish a way in and out of the woods, so they could make a killing off those who wish to research the anomaly. Plus according to the other elders their clan would likely be forgiven if they could establish a safe haven in one of the most dangerous places on Fracture. Stygian didn't really care one way or the other, it was quite hungry and didn't pay attention to specific details. It did have enough mental capacity left to glare at Gwyn.
Gwyn had tried to delay or stop the other pixie elders from giving Stygian the title of protector. The deväk had nearly sacrificed itself in their defense and the fact that Gwyn tried to just let their hero die didn't sit right with anyone. So the title was awarded, and Gwyn went from powerful wartime leader to barely tolerated. Apparently before the clan fell Gwyn had many powerful demons under his command and part of the reason their clan fell was from fear of what Gwyn could one day become. It seemed that Gwyn couldn't stop digging either and he had tried several times to give Stygian either cursed or corrupted item. Thankfully Stygian's official title as protector and Vae's knight meant that many pixies were looking out for the bug and every attempt failed. It had gotten to the point where Stygian and Vae just ignored Gwyn.
Seeing the frustrating and conniving pixie made our shelled friend want to leave. Stygian could have gone hunting alone, but much preferred company. And Vae was the best company. Vae was the only pixie that made the deväk feel like it wasn't a monster. The other pixies stared at Stygian with equal parts respect, fear and disgust, they flinched at the harsh way Stygian spoke and went pale at the sound of the little bugs dragging and shuffling steps. While Vae was patient and understanding, she was kind to Stygian and would smile freely around him. Besides Vae had a magical tether that let them stray a hundred meters out in any direction. Otherwise Stygian would have to remain within eyesight, which would be quite boring.
Of course, finding prey was easy for our small friend, who only had to let out a screech or two and the prey would come to it. Which did have a chance of drawing either host-worms or mudling to our deväk. However, it was far more effective to go with Vae and let parasitical growth guide them to prey. Of course they could've tried to hunt for aväks, margs, or humans, but it was doubtful that at Stygians current size it could do anything to either humans or aväks. Margs on the other hand were a different story, Vae hadn't heard of anything even remotely similar to the limb replacers. So the duo wrote off the original trilogy as a bad joke for now. Well at the very least until the metamorphosis was completed.
Fortunately the council meeting was rather short lived and our duo set out. It didn't matter what direction they traveled in because the forest was an ever shifting nightmare. So they set out in the same direction as they always did, at least until the city was out of sight and then Stygian would take over. While the shy slayer was leading the way, it was the best opportunity to talk since it didn't have to look at Vae, and it could pretend that it was just talking to itself. Vae's sense of aesthetics told her that she shouldn't find murderous twisted black insect cute, but come on you could almost hear the blush every time Stygian spoke in the rasping manner that it did.
"Hey Stygy, what is your lust percentage at?" Vae blurted out on the same train of thought. Though Vae had given the little bug its name, she still likes to shorten it when they were alone.
Too flustered to speak, our deväk just gave Vae permission to look at its status page. Where she pulled up the relevant information.
Lust
You feel, talkative... 47%
"Lower than last time I checked it, Stygy. If you want to be freed from this you have to level it up."
"yyyyooou DDdooo nooot knNoowW ThAT, cCcould geeeeTT worrrsSse fooor MMEee."
"True, but you like talking don't you?"
"...y-yyees, buttt yyoouu Aall sssoo mmmuCCchh beetteRRrr thaaann meEE. PlussSs iiif MMEee LLoook Att Theem Mmee fooorgETt woordssss."
Vae wanted to sigh and tell the stubborn deväk that it just had to do this thing, but given the fickle nature of sins that probably wouldn't work. Sins only advanced when one acted upon their true desires, forcing it would defeat the purpose. If Stygian could gain some charisma things would get easier, but well that would require an eloquence of speach far beyond Stygy.
While Vae was doing her puzzling the reshelled Stygian stopped abruptly causing Vae to bump in to its back. It had stopped in front of a fairly large stream. Vae had a hunch that all the lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams were connected somehow. So no matter where they ended up if there was water, mudling's could usually be found, but only in low numbers. It seemed that after the initial massacre the rest of the mudlings were hiding. Not that either Stygian or the promiscuous pixie were concerned. Our shelled friend only needs two more mudlings then it was done with that gene pool.
Well used to the deväk's hunting patterns by now Vae began pulling spears from what seemed like mid air. While in actuality she was using a spell called Stash that let her pull items from a marked location at will. While not as useful as a storage item or even the vault spell, stash was good for short distance retrieval. Most importantly Stash used a basic ambient magic instead of a pixies more powerful internal nature magic. It is quite possible for anyone to use any type of magic, but just as some people are more gifted dancers or artisians everyone has different areas of expertise. While it is rare for pixies to have access to other magics, most of the earth pixies on the council do. Including Gwyn, but alas that is of less importance right now.
The Ten spears, discounting the one already in its grasp, were planted tip down in wide circle around the deväk. These spears were more of an extra precaution than anything, that Stygian insisted upon. After the bone spear had been cracked, Stygian didn't want to imagine what would happen if it was left completely weaponless. Best to not risk finding out in Stygian's opinion. Vae then pulled out a purplish potion and drank. This potion was designed to erase her presence and let her blend with the background. Cheaper, easier, and usually just as effective as invisibility potions, camo potions were also far more common. Then Vae did the one thing all pixies are warned that they should never do in the wild: she cast a spell. She increased the deväk's Dex and Agi, while decreasing the Str attribute. This was to give the deväk a bit of an edge while simultaneously letting it train weaker stats. Plus it would most definitely cause a swarm.
While she had taken precautions, and felt fairly safe around Stygian it was still quite dangerous. There were always unknown elements that could ruin even the most well thought out plans. Fortunately, Vae wasn't one for fucking around, well at least not with her life. She flew up to a nearby oak and used a second bit of magic to bend nature to her will. She shaped a pixie sized hidey-hole; complete with viewing port and an emergency flare hole. Just in case something big came, though that was very unlikely. They had been hunting like this for a week or more and nothing big had shown up. What's more is that this would probably be the last outing before Stygian metamorphosed. After this hunt the only thing standing in our shelled friends way would be its lack of all the attributes. Well, at least all the attributes the pixies knew of, there could be more that were just well hidden.
When our deväk gained its new shell one of the things that had been taken away from the insectoid was the blood blossom, the healing flower. The reason why was because while constitution covered the resiliency and toughness of the body, there was another stat that governed over healing and regeneration. Vitality, was a stat usually found in warriors who just refuse to die, it made them extremely hard to kill. Over a hundred vitality would allow for the regeneration of fingers and toes. Two hundred fifty and you could lose whole limbs and they would come back. Five hundred was estimated to give the ability to regrow entirely missing organs, though that is only a guess of the pixies since nobody in their recorded history has had a stat that high before. The details of world history are more blurry and they are unsure if anyone has ever gotten a stat that high before. I do know all the details, but they are rather unimportant at this time.
The main difference between constitution and vitality, is that constitution strengthens every part of the body while vitality just repairs it. By training strength you can inadvertently increase your physical constitution, or go the direct path of taking repeated damage that will train both physical constitution and vitality. There are magical ways to unlock these stats just like with every stat, but the physical way is easier. Plus unlocking one side will unlock the other side as well. So for the most part the magical unlocking of stats is ignored because it usually ends up being harder than the physical way.
So part of the deväk's training was to take damage purposely and let's its body heal on its own. Of course that raises the obvious question of why would anyone think that this was a good idea? The answer is that it's really not, unless you consider that Vae and Stygian were in a relatively safe part of the forest, and to run into anything that could threaten Stygian they would need to wander a few miles deeper into the forest. This section was dangerous, but only to those without armor plating growing out of them and a pension for extreme violence.
Speaking of which, the fun was just about to start as insects rushed the deväk. Stygian didn't even pretend to be interested in this trash. It sensed a few host-worms either in the ground or puppeting some of the bigger insects, but they were of no consequence. It took blow after blow without flinching and swung the heavy bladed spear in wide arcs killing bug after bug in one hit. It felt dull sensation of bruises forming under its chitin, but Stygian didn't care. All the deväk could think about was that these small frys would have made wonderful snacks, but our stalwart glutton found that prompts during combat were quite distracting and especially tiresome since they would just keep asking if Stygian wanted to swap gene pools. So Stygian just grit its fangs and powered through. The hordes of mindless insects rapidly began to thin, the burst of magic Vae had let out wasn't super powerful so the swarm was rather small. Still it was more than enough to draw out the final host-worms Stygian needed.
Suddenly our shelled friend felt something like a vice clamp down on its left shoulder. Instead of surprise or alarm Stygian just sighed, it had been waiting for this mudling to attack the whole time and had purposely left it's back open to the river. You see dear friends the mudling's had grown quite cautious of the deväk and would never attack head on anymore. So Stygian had begun to deliberately leave itself open to rivers and streams to prompt the mudling's into attacking. It pretend to struggle against the mudling as it waited for the second one that Parasitical Growth told Stygian was coming. When the second one finally latched onto the deväk's right leg, its shoulder was in quite a bit of pain. In one swift move the shelled monstrosity twisted out of the vice like bites and then split the skulls of mudling's like overripe grapes with swift spear strokes.
Just like that the fighting was over, there were three other mudling's lurking below the surface of the stream out of sight, but Stygian knew they were there. Never taking it's eyes off of the stream, Stygian began to devour all of its kills. Ignoring the several tedious notification asking if it would like to swap its desecrator gene pool. Our shiny black friend only stopped its feast when it had eaten the last host-worm it needed. Honestly, Stygian was finding less and less satisfaction in the act of eating flesh. It felt like there was a pit inside the deväk blacker than its own chitin, before it felt like if Stygian could eat enough it could be full. Now no matter how much it ate the pit only seemed to deepen, and the food that had no taste for Stygian grew even less satisfying. All while the hunger pangs Stygian suffered only grew harder to ignore.
Finished with its unappetizing meal, Stygian called Vae down from her tree and they made a bit of a hasty retreat. They had gotten what they had come for, and the lurking mudlings were preventing prompts from popping up. So fleeing, or as a general would say making a tactical retreat, Vae and Stygian began to make their way back.
Congratulations, combat level increased to 10. Attributes increased by; Per +2, Agi +1. Physical modifiers increased by; Str +0.5. Congratulations on reaching combat level 10. You have been awarded a specialized job. You can accept or reject this job, however you will never be offered this choice again.
One of the reading exercises Vae made Stygian practice was reading the prompts before absorbing them. This was so Stygian could practice reading and comprehending words. After reading then absorbing, Stygian was less than surprised about the job notification. This was not an unexpected windfall for our finely shelled friend, Vae had informed Stygian of the award for reaching level ten. She called it a combat class job, and it was apparently really useful. Depending on the actions of an individual when earning combat levels, any number of jobs could be available ranging from common to unheard of. It was almost always worth it to accept a class when awarded, unless you had access to a high level or rare trainer, then it wouldn't be worth wasting the job slots. Everyone has a different amount of job slots, so it's not unusual to have multiple jobs at once, but it is hard to get rid of a job once accepted.
You have earned the job:
Geneticist
Life in all forms is a marvel, and you are one of the very few who can understand why and how living things are the way they are.
This is a dual class job for combat and research. This class will take up 2 research slots, and 2 combat slot. You will have 4 combat slots, and 0 research slots remaining.
Will you accept?
Yes / No
Deciding to wait, Stygian asked Vae what in the elder demons left testicle a research slot was? Which for some reason provoked her to screech to accept the class at Stygian without even a moment of hesitation.
Congratulations! You have received the multi-class; Geneticist. Every combat level will make this class more effective.
You've unlock new attributes! Intelligence (Int), and Wisdom (Wis). New attributes set to +5 each.
Congratulations, thanks to your multi-class and new attributes you have unlocked Research Level. Every level of research will make any and every research job more potent.
Research Level 1 Geneticist Level 1 Geneticist study the tapestry of life in the form of genetic code. The main goal of a geneticist is to understand what genes do what in all forms of organic life. However, the mere study is not enough for you, and thus you have been awarded a variant form of the geneticist. Though all classes mold to the individual yours is already unique, being a combination of monster tamer/breeder and geneticist. Every level you advance, you can earn up to a skill per job slot that this class occupies
Upon receiving the class, everything became just the tiny bit sharper in the deväk's mind. As though someone had cleaned a bit of filth off a dirty window. Things were easier to remember and thoughts came easier and faster. Seeing the new clarity in the deväk's eyes Vae smiled broadly, explaining things to her menacing companion was about to get a whole lot easier. Plus the deväk shared all the prompts without Vae even asking. Geneticist was something that Vae had never heard of before, but it made sense that Stygian got it. Almost all the fighting it had ever done was to fill its gene pools. So a class that specifically dealt with genes that had a combat aspect was ideal. Well it would be ideal if it took up more combat slots, but you can't have everything.
It was also rather odd to Vae that Stygian had been awarded a combination of monster tamer/breeder to Geneticist. To her knowledge Stygian have never tamed or breed monsters. Still this was the best fit for Stygian. If Stygian could breed specific monsters for its gene pools, then achieving optimal metamorphosis would be quite easy.
In the entire history of Fracture this class has only been bestowed 10 times, the most recent recipient besides Stygian was several hundred years ago and thanks to their research they live to this day. Now listen close my friends, for you must know that this class is only rare on Fracture because they are almost eternally stuck in medieval times. Neither pixie nor bug know this and even if they did it wouldn't change much, but I find it interesting.
Vae began explaining all of that she knew about what just happened, "You just obtained what is called a muti-class, which means a class that spreads over different areas of expertise. For example the Jack of all trades class fills a slot from every available section the receipient has access too. There are six different categories of expertise. Obviously there is combat and research, but there is also labour, artisan, social, and magic. Almost every high level class is split between at least two different sections. I'm sorry that I didn't mention it sooner it's just never been relevant before."
She was quite right about that, the other leveling sections were useless for Stygian at least until it got smart, but Stygian just waited for Vae to explain why.
"You need to unlocked intelligence and wisdom which are required for both research, and magic levels to unlock. Which I had planned to tell you about both once they unlocked, but too late now. You would need to hone a labourer job to unlock an artisan job, or find an artisan skill your good at to unlock the job and then use the job to make money to unlock labour level. Neither you nor I have the patience or time for those right now. You can barely talk to anyone so social is out. Besides being a spy, prostitute, bard, or politician doesn't suit you. These six sections have a lot of gray area between them so more than a few multi-class jobs exist. The thought had crossed my mind that you might get a multi-class job, but I thought it was unlikely with your limited state of mind. It is important not though that these sections also act like the physical modifiers do on your stats. The higher level a section is, the more effective your job will be. It's pretty straight forward, if a bit tedious."
The deväk nodded only giving Vae half of its attention, it wants to ask a question. The thought occurred while she was talking about intelligence and wisdom. Stygian is almost positive it will be shot down, but nothing ventured nothing gained, right?
"SSsOO mmeE mmETTAmmorPHosis?"
Despite wanting to wait until vitality unlocked so she could give Stygian the best options for growth, there wasn't a good reason to wait anymore. With the way Stygian fought it would certainly unlock vitality eventually, and it would make more sense to wait until they needed to go out hunting again. They had tempted fate enough. Besides Stygian may get frustrated and go off and do it on its own. So reluctantly Vae agreed just before they reached the settlement. They found a small gap where the side of a tree met the ground that was within sight of the settlement. Vae cast a basic magic spell so she could feel this place within her magical perception. The forest could easily separate Vae and her marker by several hundred thousand kilometers, but seemed to think that was unfair. So the forest wouldn't move the tree Stygy was in if Vae kept its mark in her magical sense. So Vae wouldn't lose track of Stygian and our shelled friend would remain undisturbed.
Just before Vae left she cast a basic magic spell on the tree to make it unassuming to all, and keep things that might want to get in out. She looked at her strange new friend, who was trying to suspend itself at the ceiling of the gap. Stygian was odd to be sure, but she felt such a strange connection to them. It was almost like fate. Vae had spent a great deal of her childhood reading and learning about all sorts of flora and fauna, but she had an obsession with aväk and their lesser brethren deväk. Monster tamers across the globe would pay vast fortunes for a single aväk crystalisk, just for the minute chance of raising a powerful deväk. The unlimited potential of a deväk is only marred by their fragility. Their bodies mutate randomly based on the consumed flesh and most deväk don't last a week. Without the intelligence to stabilize their bodies, deväk are unable to enter metamorphosis and die. If by some miracle they succeed, then they have to do it at least twice more in order to gain the barest form of intelligence. Raised by monster tamers they would have a better chance, but it was still low. However, if you can make it through every improbable event and raise a deväk to adulthood then you would have a nigh unstoppable killing machine. Vae had always been enthralled by the idea of limitless possibilities and variations for a single lifeform. She longed to meet an aväk her whole life, but few stray from their capital, and yet here she was with a coherent and aware deväk.
Vae has been through much hardship and struggle in her life, but in this moment staring up at a pitch black murder bug she couldn't be happier. In fact it makes it all seem worth it just to be friends with Stygian. Thinking this would be the last time she saw Stygian for a little while, Vae wanted to say something, but couldn't find the words. Then a thump from behind startled her back to the present. She saw that Stygian, who had been trying to lodge itself in the ceiling had fallen and landed hard on the floor face up. Which was slightly comical in and of itself, but then the murder bug began to let out its disconcerting laugh. Now Vae was startled and confused, about to ask what was going on, she was cut off by a prompt that Stygian had just shared with her.
Congratulations, new attribute unlocked Vitality(Vit)
