《The Immortal》23: Festival

"How is older brother Lod and older brother Sten?" I ask mother, while trying to interact with my little sister as much as possible.
"Lod is already a dependable. He got married two years ago and his wife is currently pregnant. He should be here somewhere. Sten left for the city as soon as he turned adult."
I simply nod, I really didn't care but I don't know what else I could have asked.
"And how have you been mom?" I ask while making a few funny faces at Vella, to which she grins.
"Oh, it's been a little difficult, but it has settled. I didn't give any children to Hagar, so I have been scolded a little" she makes a slightly guilty expression.
We chat about meaningless things. Vella doesn't remember me at all, but is quick to trust me, by the time it starts to grow dark and people start going home, she is already sitting on my lap and having me hold her doll. Jorgen comes over.
"Come, Yos, there is something I should give you" He says, dragging me away slightly forcefully.
I follow him back to his home, where either he or Hannah has prepared a few items on the table.
"I have invested my last few good years in making you an excellent man, Yos. Now I am going to invest my last bit of wealth and knowledge" He start by handing me a chainmail. "Even if you're tough, don't let it go to your head. Don't sell this, wear it, it is made of hyacite, the second best metal readily available."
The chainmail has a blue luster to it. The shine makes me think it has been polished.
"Hannah has also worked on this leather armor. It will serve you well" A shirt and a set of pants that look really thick is given to me. Wait, these are normal pants? The annoying ropework I had to do with the ones I am wearing now had scared me, but it seems these are just some ceremonial clothes.

"This sword and shield is my old prized possessions. I don't know how well the shield will hold up, but the sword is made of flavite and will hold up quite well as long as proper maintenance is used" The sword has a yellow tinge to it. It really tells me very little that all these metals, that I don't know is used.
"Then, some money. Use these to solve any manner of problems you may run in to without reserve" He hands me a leather purse, in which there are 20-something blue coins and 1 yellow one. The yellow coin has a depiction of a man working.
"What is the yellow one worth? I have never seen it before." I state curiously
"Six years of labor. It is almost unusable as it is, so you should exhange it somewhere when you can. It should give you between 100 and 150 blue coins" Wow, this is expensive, but wait.
"I thought the coins could be exchanged for their value, but what do you exchange the yellow one for?"
"Ah, in the city, man do not live by the dungeon, but make their living in many weird ways, one of them involving money. Should someone borrow money they cannot be back, or doesn't trust themselves to feed themselves, they can be forced or they will volunteer as servants. The local nobility will hold them, and in exchange for the coin given to the nobility, who will use it to pay their debts, or to themselves after their work is done. That makes them your servant for 6 years. But many avoid it since it has all manner of complications."
Jorgen chews a little on nothing before continuing.
"When one is such a servant, one is considered subhuman, useless and unreliable. The owner is priviliged to punish them in any way they see fit. And if you buy them, the nobility will meddle with you, making sure you don't kill them. Many lesser men have also bought their wives in this way, though that sometimes causes serious trouble when the six years are over."

So basically, there is an indentured servitude system here... Better never fall into debt.
"Now, lastly I have advice for you. You are a man now, and thus entitled to make your own decisions, but you should see the world, young Yos. If you stay in the village there is only really one way to live a good life, but if you see the world, many options will open themselves for you. I highly recommend you join the hunter's association. They get around a lot and do a lot of different things. Take this, it's a recommendation from me, which should hold a little weight" He hands me a letter. Wait, I thought he couldn't read?
"I recommend you leave quickly, before you make too many relations in this village. Those gets harder and harder to abandon, the more they grow." He says sternly. But I had already decided. I am going to create a life, where I can compete with my body against others, I want to race again and I will make it happen.
I cast a look at Jorgen. I really hated this man to death some three years ago. Still do a little. But he did what he thought was best, and he has sacrificed much for me. In addition, it has also been three years since he did anything too outrageous and he kind of felt more like my father now, than Karar ever did. I smile and say.
"Thank you"
