《Drakon the Necrolord》Chapter 6 - The shield maiden

I figured finishing the summon might be better to do in my room so we went through the doorway to my room. Even in the hour or so after its first creation, it had already gone through a few changes. Instead of the bare walls and bright interior, the lights were a little bit dimmer and whereas Grim’s room seemed to have a window looking out over the street and back to the boarding school, I wonder how it does that, mine had no windows at all and just had some flickering torches on the walls for lighting.

“Well, it definitely is a bit more necro lord-ish than my room.” Grim chuckled. “Now let's see who will replace me shall we.” He followed with a slap on my back.

I had enough clear space in the room that unless I somehow got a giant I think I would be fine. So I clicked the button on my HUD to finish the cast of the summon spell.

With a bright flash of light a small portal appeared and what looked like a red-headed human girl not that much older than us in a bright green dress stepped through. She looked to be around five feet tall.

Grim started laughing. “This, this dainty little thing will be a commander in one of your armies?”

“Well green-skin, this is my casual attire, let me show you what form I take in battle.” And with that, the girl's dress transformed into full battle plate, and she then grew two extra feet now being the same height as Grim. After the growth spurt, two big wings appeared on her back and a spear and shield appeared in her hands. “You want to try me out?”

“She will do, ill let you two get acquainted” Grim wiggled his eyebrows in a suggestive manner, getting a chuckle out of the woman “I'll head back to my room and start unpacking, ill see you later for dinner. And here ill give you a copy of my key.” And with that, he went back to his room which looked to have gone through a few small changes as well in the short time we were gone.

Turning around I saw that the girl had turned back into what she called her casual attire again. “Hello, my name is Drakon, who and what are you.”

“Hello Lord Drakon, I'm Moira. I'm a Valkyrie sent by the gods to act as your second in command. Although to be fair I did volunteer for the job. You're my first.” As soon as it came out of her mouth she blushed. “I mean you are the first lord that I’ve served. Up until now all I have done is shepherd the souls of those brave adventurers that died in service of the gods to the afterlife.”

“What made you volunteer?” I asked after also blushing at the first comment. She was a beautiful young woman standing in my bedroom after all.

“The last soul that I escorted was that of your mother. Not your birth-mother, but the woman who raised you. She asked me to look over you. The gods learned that you were going to be a Necrolord soon after, so they granted my request and I have been training to be a shield-maiden ever since.” With that, she dropped to one knee clenched her fist, and held it over her heart. “I Moira will faithfully serve Drakon and his house, I will relinquish all ties to the gods and bind myself to him instead.” She then added with a smile “If he will have me of course”

Somehow knowing exactly what to say to finish the binding. “I Drakon of house currently unknown will accept the allegiance of Moira. I will however not have anyone be a slave. You have free will and if you want to keep following whatever faith you had, you are free to do so.” And with a wink back I added “And she must call me Drakon. None of that Lord stuff.” And with that the binding was complete.

“Now the more important thing is where will you stay? As you can see this bedroom is a bit small at the moment, although I do understand that it will grow in time, I don't think you will want to share a bed.” Which warranted another blush.

“Valkyries don’t work that way I’m afraid.” And she quickly lifted her dress. Before I even had time to avert my gaze I saw that underneath she was still in the same plate armor. It seemed to be a part of her. “But like every girl, I like to feel beautiful so I wear this dress over it when not in battle. I'm hoping that by the time we get back from dinner another room will have been added, if not you can un-summon me, start casting the summon spell before you go to bed, and then re-summon me after you wake up in the morning. Now before we head to dinner it might be prudent to use up your path points.”

“Any suggestions you have would be welcome Moira,” I said while looking over the list.

Paths available:

Revenant LVL 1

Skeletons LVL 1

Zombies LVL 1

Command LVL 1

Heavy armor

Weaponry LVL 1

“You are the first lord that I have served as a companion to, but I have had a good amount of training, of both the gods and the adventurers sent to Valhalla. And no guarantees, as your race and class are both rare. That being said I think you can skip heavy armor for now, as you can see it hasn’t got a level to it meaning it will almost certainly be just the heavy armor skill. If you do want to wear heavy armor the penalty for doing so unskilled is not that high, and you would almost certainly learn it on its own pretty quickly. My only real suggestion is to take skeletons or zombies and start from there.”

Thinking that her suggestion was a good one I figured I would start with picking the skeleton path. After selecting it a notice appeared on my HUD.

Didn't seem like it unlocked any new paths so I mentally clicked on the new ability to check it out.

“What's this about unit slots?” I asked Moira

“At the moment you have none available. Each unit you command or have delegated will take up a single unit slot. The maximum size of the unit depends on the type of troop and of the paths takes. I'm thinking the command skill will probably unlock one or more slots for you. You can also get reserve slots later but will cross that bridge when we come to it.”

So thinking the command path wouldn't hurt as I was a Lord I did just that and selected the command path.

That seemed to have unlocked a new icon on my HUD called units. So I clicked on it to check it out.

As I only had the one unit type available I figured I would start with a unit of skeleton spearmen thinking it would combo well with Moira.

Being very bad at names and already deciding that Moira would command these ones, I named them Moira’s Chosen.

“It seems I can pick the summoning position and where the units will go after they get summoned. I'll keep both of those in the room at the moment. I'm starting to get hungry so let's go.” I opened the door to the hallway and with a small bow let her exit before me. “Ladies first.” Giving me a small flick to the head which shaved off 5 HP she swept past me saying “I'm no lady.” Then winked at me and hurried down the hallway.

Thinking to myself what's with the people in my life hitting me over the head all the time, it's a miracle that I still have a brain left. And I walked after Moira and went down the stairs.

Grim was waiting for us in the hallway. “Well, Drakon what are we going to do for dinner. Now that we are not at the boarding school anymore we will have to find another place to eat. We have a little bit of coin saved up so we should be fine for a few days until we can get some quests done.”

Janet who had taken back her seat at the desk overheard us and called us over. “Well if you head into the guildhall and down to where the auction house is, you can actually buy some meals there. Don't worry food is kept in stasis so as long as it's in the auction house it won't spoil. You can then sit at one of the tables to eat and use it to pull up quests at the same time. I'm thinking with Grim here being a cleaver it won't take more than a few days before your room will have a kitchen.”

“Well, it seems like a good plan as any, would you like to join us, Janet?” I asked.

“You kids go ahead, one word of advice though, don't take on any quests above level one for now. It’s better to build up a small nest egg of funds and get some basic gear before tackling harder things.” And with a dismissive wave back towards the portal she turned to a new face that showed up at her desk.

“Let's go then, I'm hungry and nobody gets between a half-orc and dinner.” Grim held out an arm to Moira “Shall we, my dear.”

Moira took his arm and all three of us went down to dinner.
