It suddenly occurred to Mark, as his finger reached out to push a button on the elevator panel, that he should be bringing his shotgun with him. The thought made him uncomfortable. He was trying to remind himself that he was looking for nothing, and hoping to find it.

If he took the shotgun, it would require some explaining if he was discovered. Who knew if everyone had even gone home up there, after all. It was really late, but maybe some exec or IT man usually stayed late. It was possible. They may have even left while he was out on patrol on previous nights. There was also, as unlikely as it already was, the increased chance of him being discovered by some tech that had left the lab.

No, he had nothing to fear, and just having the more powerful weapon with him was likely to make him more jumpy, not less. A shotgun blast to a squeaky door would be impossible to satisfactorily explain. Taking a deep breath, Mark reached out and pressed a button.
