《Bathilda the Bat》Trying Times

The screams of the little girl ring in Bathilda's ears as she opens her eyes and jumps up off the floor.
Surrounded by the walls of her base, which have grown smaller yet again, Bathilda's head reaches the ceiling and forces her to hunch over. This means that she has now become way too large to fit in the once perfectly hideout for evolution.
"Fucking useless stupidly-sized body of a bastard bat, this is bullshit!" turning to the small entrance, Bathilda reaches out to begin opening the rather small gap when she suddenly stops.
A long, hair-filled arm, is stretched out before her and isn't attached to any type of wing.
"Well that's disturbing! I look like I should be Big Foot's wife," she jests whilst casting Echolocation, not really noticing the significance of what she saw until her skill provides her with a clearer picture and she gets a good look at herself.
"Holy shit! I've got arms and wings now!? Yes, fucking yes! Go, Vampire Bat for the win," crying out she then notices the hairy legs supporting her upper body and the feet connected to the bottom of them, "Yes, I knew it! Well I didn't know it, but I was definitely hoping for it!"
Laughing at her almost-triumph-outcome, it turns out Bathilda is more happy with her appearance than she originally let on to Hiro.
"Hey!? Why did you say I looked scarier now?" Suddenly offended at the description she was referred to before going to sleep, Bathilda scolds her hitchhiker at his poor choice of words. Bathilda is ecstatic with her newly-acquired appendages, even if they do contain more hairy than is necessary.
Have you looked at your face? It's horrifying!
She had not actually. In her daze over her human-like arms and legs, she had completely overlooked her head. Now that she's taking a second look, she's horrified that she didn't notice it the first time she looked.

"Holy shit!
Human eyes sit positioned where you would expect to find them, above the nose. Above that though, sits two extra eyes that have no pupils and are blood red. Below the nose is an extremely large mouth that has multiple rows of teeth. This was only made noticeable as Bathilda was smiling when she first cast Echolocation. Finishing off her already-weird head, she has the strangest looking ears she has ever seen.
It's as though they couldn't make up their mind on what they wanted to be and decided on being both bat and human at the same time.
"No one is approaching this face. Not without wanting to slice it off me, that is..."
It could be worse, Hiro attempts to cheer up the dejected and horrific-looking Bathilda.
"How, Hiro? How could I look any worse?" unable to picture anything uglier than herself, Bathilda wonders what universe Hiro's living in if he thinks he's seen anything scarier than her.
You could be a Brat...
"Well, I stand corrected. That would actually be worse than this... Vampire-type-thingy, if that's even what is it. Is this what a vampire looks like on your world?" Hung up over the differences between her current appearance, and what she deems be vampiresque, Bathilda looks for aid from her leeching stowaway...
I'm sorry to say that I don't actually know what a vampire is.
And finds nothing.
"It's supposed to be beautiful and shiny and gorgeous and radiant...and sexy as hell too," revealing her large-pointed teeth, Bathilda smiles at her idea of a Vampire before immediately closing her mouth and pouting right after. Or the closest thing to a pout she can pull with a face like that.
You still have more evolutions to go through, right? Trying to aid his own chances of success, as much as his ride's, Hiro attempts to encourage Bathilda into action again.
"Yeah, I do," she answers in a lethargic demeanour before building up energy as she continues, "The problem though, is the level requirement keeps rising. I need to get to level fifty to max myself out this time and what if I still don't become what I would really-really-really want to become? Huh? The level cap next time might be a hundred! A hundred is huge! I already feel like I've been here forever! How much time would I have to put in to reach that number? A fuck load. That's how much! But... What else am I going to do? I'm not going to sit here and starve am I? I'm not stupid. I'm just really-really frustrated right now,"

Summoning a fresh clone, Hiro finds himself forcefully ejected from Bathilda's mind into the clone.
"How did you do that?" worried that he won't be able to return because of overwhelming force that pushed him out of his safe zone inside Bathilda's mind, Hiro begins to panic.
"Don't worry, you can come back after. For now, four arms are better than two so get digging," she motions to the small crack that she once thought of as an entrance.
"So you're not giving up, yes! I really don't want to die down down here in this... Hovel," happy with the outcome, Hiro horrifies Bathilda with his smile as he gets close to help dig them out.
"Please don't smile. Our face is bad enough as it is with seeing all those teeth," she winces.
"I know right. This is a lot of teeth," Hiro smiles again knowing that he's helping Bathilda by making her want to progress past this evolution as quickly as possible. Not that she needs any help in that department and all his smile earns him is a smack in the head.
"More digging, less smiling. Unless you want another one?" Bathilda frowns with both sets of eyes and Hiro feels a chill run down his spine.
"Yes, mam," With that, Bathilda and Hiro, pull, push, and force, their way through the hard earth until they are finally able to leave their base.
"Finally. That's problem one solved, now for problem two," Bathilda takes a step back from the ledge outside her home and places her back on the wall.
"What's problem two?" Hiro comes through the entrance after Bathilda and takes a quick peek over the edge.
"I thought of it whilst we were excavating the doorway. It's seeing if these wings fly as well as the last set did. The others were all attached differently after all," Bathilda looks at the new location of their wings as she stares at Hiro. They are on the back of her shoulders and the newly-created human-arms now take up their original spot.
"Alright! How do we do..." before he can finish his sentence, Bathilda pushes Hiro off the ledge in hopes that flight is just like riding a bike. Luckily for Hiro, he barely drops a few feet before balancing himself and rising back up to face Bathilda.
"You pushed me," sounding upset, Hiro tries his best to pout as Bathilda did earlier.
"You're over it. Anyway, if it's that easy, let's go," taking off like a bullet Bathilda wonders why she pushed Hiro off the ledge.
'Maybe I'm goin crazy? Meh, that's a problem for tomorrow's Bathilda. For now I need to kill a lot of shit and luckily, I know just where to find it.'
Landing on the ground in a cloud of dust, Bathilda releases a torrent of slashes at the Brat's that were drawn to the noise before taking off and receiving a few levels in the process. She immediately darts back down to another spot and repeats the same move.
"Haha, let the Bartpocolypse begin," Bathilda shouts as a second Bat lands across the room and releases its own stream of blades.

The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
