《Wayfinder》Day 22: Ratcatchers in Belrond

El wakes up to being jostled and shaken. His eyes pop open as he stares at the purple scaled kobolds wide with fear. The kobold puts a finger to his lips letting El know to be quiet and to wait. In the distance, a Rooster crows. Kib looks in the direction of the sound as his tail swishes defensively.
“That’s a Rooster.” El states blinking away the drowziness that still clung to him
“Shut up! You want it to hear us?” Kib hisses.
“You know what. Let’s go see it.” El hops off his bed.
“What? No! I can’t.” Kib shrinks into himself.
“Nope, go down the ladder.” El guides him down.
The two leave the barn. El grabs a bag of grain before they walk into the village. They head to the side of the first house closest to Arkin’s. They approach a penned-in area, El walks behind Kib, loops his arms under his shoulders raising him up, and places him inside the pen without a second thought.
“Hey wait, what are you… AGHHHHH!!!” Kib turns and grabs at the top of the fence with his claws beginning to pull himself back out.
“Whoa, hey, they're just chickens,” El says calmly as dozens of chickens strut about, bobbing their heads, looking at the kobold.
“What are chickens!?” Kib hangs onto the top of the fence glaring at El.
“Basically what you are to dragons; they are to Rocs.” El reaches over and pats the head of a chicken.
“Hmmm.” Kib distrustfully and hesitantly lets himself back down in the middle of a swarm of chickens.
“Hold out your hands.” El asks Kib.
The kobold does so and the field hand pours some grain into his hands and then in a circle around him. The chickens swarm and a few peck grain out of his open palms. Kib laughs and looks over at El. The field hands rests against the fence with his drowsy eyes half closed and a listless smile plastered on his face.

They don’t spend much more time there before Kib heads to his mine and El heads back to Arkin’s farm.

The Ruins of Magincia
They say all things end in time, but the exalted City of Magi would’ve begged to differ. Yet when an attempted coup goes wrong, the city finds itself brought to the very brink of destruction. In the wake of the calamity that left no survivors, the autonomous infrastructure still operating the ruined city seeks to restore what was lost. Luckily for it, the Mana-devoid Universe it awoke in holds an unexpected surprise: a planet full of sentient life forms. All capable—with a little help—to become the next generation of Magi. Back on Earth, Millie McArthur is a pregnant out-of-work mechanic struggling with the prospect of moving back in with her parents after leaving her unfaithful fiancé. That is until she finds herself just one of the hundreds that have been shanghaied by the callous artificial constructs still manning the ruins of Magincia. Now, she must struggle to learn magic, compete for resources, get good 'grades,' and fulfill the seemingly arbitrary requirements for her future job in this broken city. All while keeping herself, and her son, alive. Is the miracle of magic really enough to make up for all the pain? The Ruins of Magincia is a dark fantasy that's heavy on the drama (LitRPG aspects are very light). Chapter lengths can be anywhere from 7k-12k and there's no current release schedule as I'm focusing on wrapping up volume one.

Trial of Champions
It all began with a family trip to an amusement park. How were any of us to expect being transported from Earth to participate in some "Trial of Champions," whatever that was supposed to be? Given only an hour to choose the Classes that would come to define our strengths, we were almost immediately torn away from one another and thrust into a deadly game of survival. It wasn't all bad, though, as terrifying as it could be from time to time. The supernatural and magical powers of the Classes were like something out of an RPG, complete with leveling up by killing monsters and completing so-called "Sub-Trials." And despite the juicy Experience to be gained from killing other Champion Contestants, not all of the participants were bloodthirsty murderers; some could be allied with, or even befriended. Even if it seemed like everyone who had been chosen for this Trial, no matter what universe they came from, was at least a little bit crazy. I would survive this till the end, and I'd make sure that my siblings and parents did as well, no matter how many times we were separated from one another. No matter how long it took. No matter what I had to do. --- A first-person litRPG incorporating classes inspired by D&D and other sources. If you like blue boxes but don't need to have huge lists of numbers to scratch your itch, you should be satisfied on that front. Each chapter is, in my word processing document, seven pages long (approximately 3300-3900 words). The Traumatizing Content warning is there because of discussions of certain topics. Nothing that I think deserves the warning actually happens in the story.

Midnight Origins: Arrival
On a lush planet known as Bhar, Verun is now the leading nation in the development of the rivaled schools of Magic and Science. Having brought forth an era of peace and prosperity for themselves through the development of Magitech, The High council was eager to spread their knowledge and beliefs to the furthest reaches of the continent, with the goal of ending senseless conflicts and prioritizing advancements in Magitech and improving the quality of life. This ambition, however, is not without opposition. Most followers side with one school or another, believing it is superior in nature. This conflict dates back to the very beginning of civilization itself, where it is believed by both sides that their gods descended from the heavens, bestowing upon them the knowledge that would bring the world into a new age. And though some took great interest in their differences, others would seek to convert each other through any means necessary. That being the case, The High council, leaders of Verun, had made the necessary preparations to handle threats and attempt diplomacy between the remaining opposers. Talented volunteers were hand chosen to be among the military, tasked with protecting the nation from both internal and external threats. And although non-biological creations have improved quality of life, they are not yet capable of replacing the military. The necessary research and development for such a thing was thought to be decades away, until Councilman Eranor encountered an anomaly in his facility…
