《Not another zombie apocalypse role playing game》Chapter four: The great escape

“At the sumptuous breakfast table an old man was seated. He wears light clothing, only worth mentioning due to everyone else wearing leather. A near undetectable gleam appears in his eyes when he hears young Ji Aleksy speak of his narrator and inventory”

‘Young man.’

“As the old man speaks the entire room of eight instantly quiets down.”

‘Young man. Ji, was it? Tell me. This narrator, does he know things he shouldn´t?’

“Hmm. Now that you mention it, ye. He kept predicting things, like where zombies would come from. He even just now said you had some sort of gleam in your eyes. Is gleam some sort of eye condition?”

‘Hmm. Hmm.’

“An odd silence ensues, there is a look of shock on the people’s faces. What is on that old man’s mind!? Who is he?! Stay with us to find out more after these quick messages!”

‘I see, I have heard stories of this. They called it the beta. This was before the great nerf.’

‘Grandfather what do you mean? Why haven’t I heard of this beta and great nerf?’

‘Ah, my dear Leysa. It is not surprising that you would not know of such tales. I myself never put much stock into the stories either. But, with everything we know about this Ji. It all fits.’

“Curious eyes and perked ears. Everyone present has stopped eating and are giving their full attention to the old patriarch of the Keeo mountain fortress.”

‘The stories tell of the first generation, the beta testers they were called. They had abilities such as the narrator and the inventory. A magical space things could be put in. similar to our void bags but more spacious.’

‘Father, you mean to say that this boy is one of the betas? But they were around over hundreds of years ago.’

‘Indeed my boy, it appears so. It appears this mysterious guest named Ji has not been telling tall tales’

“Hehe. Of course not! Beta testers huh? I guess I could said to be of the first generation. I am probably the oldest human alive today! I told you I was put into cryostasis because of my disease right? “

‘Hmm. Disease, from what you’ve told us, it sounds more like a curse. The curse of decaying life. A curse that eats away the flesh only to restore it. A form of torture. But you would be constant pain and most likely unable to move.’

“Curse? Sure in a fantasy settings I can see why you would say that. If I cut myself with this knife here.”

“Our hero wields a common knife and pierces his left hand with a deep cut. A surprising act of self-mutilation! What could possibly cause him to act in such a way! People gasp as blood gushes from the wound.”

“Don’t panic. Just watch.”

‘By the-! Have you put all attributes into regeneration!?’

“Eh? No. not really, my body’s condition is in a constant struggle to repair itself so as soon as I cut myself it is already underway to heal itself, and it would be doing it with or without the wound I created”.

“The rest of the night has become rather insignificant. Our hero devours a surprising amount of food. Yet is overshadowed by all members currently participating in the sumptuous meal.”

“We watch our hero standing on top of a high wall, the towering structure surrounds the entire city fortress. It looks neither old or new. Suggesting this fortress to be less than a few centuries old.”

“I wonder what I should do.

Do I need to hunt the undead? In the vast distance I see nothing but the ends of the horizon. I’ve just been walking on this wall.

Strangely I’ve got three men in leather uniform walking a few meters behind me. They are supposed to my guard. The old man was dead set on making sure I was safe.”

“Our poor, naive hero believes himself to have a choice in what his future entails. Little does he know that before the night ends he will whisked away in a great storm!”

“What?! What do you mean storm? What’s going to happen “

“A loud bell echoes throughout the mountain fortress Keeo. The bells signifies that the fortress will soon be under attack. An attack from what? That’s to be seen.”

‘Come with us!’

“Easy guys! Easy! I’m coming, no need to drag me like this.”

‘We have no time to argue with you, this is a state of emergency!’

“Soon our hero is dragged to southern most part of the wall. On the edge of the wall stands the middle aged burly man, Keak Keeo. He watches the horizon, an ominous cloud has begun to rise.”

“Keak! There is a horde coming! “

‘I know boy. I can see it.’

“Keak, leader of the fortress points towards a black cloud. Without improved vision our hero can only make out a small black cloud, unable even see if it’s moving towards them or away from them”

‘There hasn’t been a horde attack in decades, I’ve only see one my entire life. Little Leysa wasn’t even born back then.’

“Right. Where is Leysa? Shouldn’t she be here?”

“With a heavy sigh and a shake of his head Keak finally breaks his eye contact with the incoming swarm of undead. He looks at young Ji and sighs yet again.”

‘That girl. She’s getting ready to go out and fight. She won’t listen to me and I can’t exactly chain her up. She is stubborn! Just like her old man. Ha ha ha!’

“I see. Well then. The narrator mentioned something about me being whisked away. And as I see it, only you would have the power in this place to something like that.”

‘Aye, listen boy. This horde, not only are their numbers terrifying. They have demons capable of flying. And in their midst there are undead that aren’t just dumb beasts.

They won’t just clash against us on these walls. They’ll infiltrated the fortress. They’ll cause great chaos and I won’t be able to protect you.’

“What an intense look of stupidity. Our hero yet against stares into the void, appearing to be solving one of the great mysterious mysteries of this universe. That or his capacity for thought has reached a limit. We may never know, but i lean towards the latter.”

“Does that mean you’re sending me away?”

‘Smart. Yes. My father, demands that you be saved. He is convinced that you are to become the savior of our clan. I personally think he’s gotten a bit strange in his old age.

But I have no qualms in sending you and my daughter to safety.

I’d like to ask you try and convince her to go with you. I think my old man is already gone to talk to her.’

“Of course, sir. I’ll do my best. Any idea where we’ll be going?”

‘I’ve got a friend in one of the inner outposts, it’s become more a city. Anyway. He owes me a favor.’

“I see.”

‘Alright. Go find Leysa.’

...

“A look of resignation appears on young Ji’s face as he confronts the headstrong and determined young woman. The glare in her eyes enough to make the fiercest of men cower.”

“Listen, think of it like this. Will you make the difference that is required to repel this force? You said it yourself. You’re only in the low thousand. You're just barely above a foot soldier.”

‘*Hmph* what do you know? You’re just repeating what grandpa said! I’m definitely fighting. This is my home!’

“Alright. To be honest, I don’t really care. I’m just doing what your father asked me to do.”

“An angry glare with a hint of disappointed can be seen in the young girl's eyes when she hears the unforgiving words of our less than tactful hero.”

“What? Did you expect me to fall in a love with the first beauty I met? I’ll be lucky to live a year without going insane due to the chronic pain, i don't have time for that.

‘Love? You love me? But we only just met!’

“Eh? What?

No. I was saying, never mind.”

“An extremely awkward silence virtually echoes in the room. A near tangible feeling of awkwardness can be felt. We watch our hero turn around and exiting the room. A visibly shaken, brazen, innocent yet fierce and powerful girl left with her thoughts.”

“What innocent? What visibly shaken? She just misheard me is all. Anyway, I need to get on this bird thing before the sky gets blotted out with the numerous undead.

We even got two missions.”

“I am sure as hell not willingly becoming a part of the undead. Sounds awful. I still remember how weak the human zombies were.

Too bad about that bonus. I really could do with more stats and so on. Apparently I’m a thousand or so levels behind.”

“The rush and shouting seems to vanish as we watch our solemn looking hero walk away from the girl. All we need now is explosions and cut scenes to the teary eyed young lady.”

“Hehe. That’s pretty good. I really do hope she comes with me though, she is just about the only person I know in this world.

Hey there, old man Kiek. I couldn’t talk any sense into the girl. She’s hell-bent on fighting the undead.“

‘Ah, she takes after her late mother after all. Stubborn, strong and above all filled with duty.’

“I see. They never really talked about her.”

“The marching of troops, the bustling panic, screams of encouragement and of course the droning of thousands of flying undead monsters fills the fortress.

And where is our hero? He, like a scared dog is about to fly off on a majestic flying creature known as the emperor eagle.

Hundreds of various flying creatures are laying docile on the large field usually used to grow crops. Their random noises fill the air, amplifying the anxious atmosphere.”

“My good man. You finally did a proper narration! I’m impressed. Not bad, not bad at all.

But this quite the sight. I’m not sure how I feel about being carried by one of these behemoths. They look amazing, but they also look wild, proud and unruly. What do you think Leysa?

Eh!? Leysa, what are you doing here?”

‘*snork* That doesn’t concern you, I am merely here to make sure you get away safely. My grandpa seems worried about you is all.’

“What kind of sound was that? Are you a wild beast?”

“We watch with a feeling of sweet schadenfreude as our unusually calm hero gets put in a headlock and his head massaged roughly by a thin looking girl.”

“Owh! Oueee! Stop! Damnit. What is this, come on.”

‘Who asked you to call me a beast? You think death the only thing you need to be afraid of? I’ll let you know true fear.’

“What is this! What is happening right now! Help!”

“I know you can’t see this but I am shaking my head in disappointment right now.”

“Leysa, please. I’m sorry okay?”

‘Who is a beautiful young lady?’

“…”

‘Who is a beautiful young lady!?’

“Leysa is a beautiful young lady. Alright? Very pretty. Not at all like a wild beast.

This is ridiculous.”

“Finally our smooth and charming hero manages to free himself.”

“You coming with me then? My quest says to take you with me. Bet your father would be happy as well.

Also! I’m not entirely sure how I’d be welcomed if I showed up at your father’s friend’s door without you, him or your grandpa.

Actually, why isn’t your grandpa coming?”

‘Grandpa? That old monster? He’s the strongest person here. He’s fighting of course.

“That ancient old fossil is the strongest person here? Huh.”

‘And it seems I have to guard you while we go. Plus I also got a quest. It said to.

It said to lead you to safety. And nothing else.’

“Great! More rewards for me. So which one of these things are we flying on? You know how to fly these things?”

‘Sort of.’

“Sort of? Hey. Hey! Put me down! How are you this strong!”
