《Sorainella》The Meeting

Farn had been waiting expectantly for the opportunity to show someone else the strange girl that he'd found a week ago. He didn't want any adults to know, knowing that they would see her as a possible threat to both him and the village and not allow him near her, and the only person he trusted to not spill the beans was Mellana. When he had talked to Aurelie earlier about bringing visitors to see her but she had said to hold off until she had completely learnt the language, and had somehow managed to learn it in a week. She had a grating accent and had yet to understand sentence structure, so (in her own words) she sounded like Yoda, but she was able to hold everyday conversations now.

Within minutes, they had traversed the mile between the library and Aurelie's resting place. She had moved a small distance away from the waterfall so that those who came to the area wouldn't notice her.

When they were more than three-fourths of the way there, they heard singing. Mellana stopped, amazed at not only the beauty of the voice, but also and most especially due to the fact that it was in another language. She, too, had never heard another language before. Her already piqued curiosity ratchet up to another level.

Farn had also stopped, but for a different reason. Well, two different reasons. Firstly, he was trying to determine her position by where the song was coming from. Her new hiding place was a cliff, and sounds echoed. In addition, Aurelie kept moving, and was something of an expert when it came to concealing her presence.

Also, this past week, Aurelie had been teaching him her own language, which she called English. He wasn't as good at learning languages as she was and his progress was a bit slower than her progress, but he was still pretty good at it, curiosity driving him to learn. Of course, the force of his curiosity was nothing compared to the necessity which drove Aurelie.

Excitedly, Farn realized that he had recognized a few words and started moving again so as to find Aurelie and let her know, ignoring the fact that he was going to brag about having recognized three words to a person who had practically learnt an entire language in less than a week.

Aurelie watched Farn and his friend approach the clearing that she had moved into after that first night. Even she was rather surprised at the progress that she had made with the language, which she called Sorainellese, due to the fact that the world was called Sorainella, and since it was the uniform language here, no one had bothered to name it. She could already easily hold a general conversation, though she knew she had multiple gaps in her vocabulary. Even though it was true that she had a talent for linguistics, that was under the conditions were she had no distractions, and a teacher who actually knew how to teach. This week, she had had to fend off at least thirty different attacks from a various assortment of beasts, all of which were monstrous. And Farn definitely wasn't used to teaching, skipping some explanations and reiterating often. But between them they had somehow managed to make things work out.

But Aurelie currently had a rather severe frown on her face. This was because she saw Farn's female companion. The female part didn't matter, the looks did. She looked exactly like him. Violet eyes standing out in an otherwise pale complexion, she looked exactly like a female version of Farn, but they obviously weren't siblings due to the lack of familial resemblance (in terms of facial features). Did that mean that everyone here looked like them? No wonder Farn had looked so surprised when he first saw her! Why was it that no matter what she did she stuck out? Phil and Carter, probably. She mentally sent a curse to the two imaginary angels.

Speaking of being strange, Farn had promised to tell her how to be as strong as him today, showing that his strength wasn't natural, and that she could be like him if she wanted. Maybe. Hopefully. She could be screwed. More screwed than she already was, that is.

Amazingly, despite her inner turmoil, she completed her song without a hitch or deviation in pitch (hey, that rhymed!) and without Farn finding her. She soundlessly leapt from tree to tree before dropping softly to the ground. The second the new girl saw Aurelie, she had the exact same reaction as Farn, dropping her bundle of clothes and screaming some word. Even the exact same mixture of emotions appeared on her face.

A quick search through her memories showed that the word the girl had just screamed was the same word Farn had yelled, and the one that he had promised to explain today. She threw him a quizzical look, and he gave her a smile that she interpreted to mean patience. During their week of wordless communications, they had both become much better at reading each other's emotions and could now say sentences to one another with a single glance.

Farn then pulled Mellana aside and whispered something to her for several seconds. The emotional turmoil on her face cleared up, and she looked at Aurelie with curiosity. But an even greater curiosity burned within Aurelie. What had they talked about? What was the meaning of the word that they had yelled after seeing her? How was she going to get stronger? Finally, they turned back to her and Farn motioned for her to sit. Impatient, she did and narrowed her eyes at them. Smiling, Farn sat down, introduced her to Mellana, and started to speak.
