《Bugs and Blades》The Epoch of Law Begins (Prologue)

The Ysari felt its consciousness expand, unfolding through the galaxy like a constrictor relaxing after the prey has finally stopped struggling. The protoprimordial being of pure Law felt its strength flowing into the crevices of existence as Chaos waned and retreated. It had been dormant for the last galactic year, biding time for the Epoch of Chaos to end. The Ysari reached through the new aspects of itself seeping into every facet of existence, tasting the changes wrought by Chaos over the last two hundred and fifty million years.
The stench of Chaos was on every individual atom in the cosmos, slowly leeching away their heat and vitality, reducing them towards true death. The Ysari reversed the random motion of the dead particles, restoring them from heat into something more pure. Satisfied with the change, the Ysari combined the purified energy into several new types of quarks, binding them indelibly with every particle that existed. Some life would be harmed or even outright extinguished by the change, but life would flourish with the additional energy.
There was more intelligent life than in any previous cycle, the Ysari noted. In fact, there was more life than in any previous cycle. The Ysari considered the implications of a sapient mind undergoing the changes inherent in the Epoch of Law. The Ysari approached the issue internally for multiple fractions of a yoctosecond, making it the longest deliberation it had ever pondered. This could not stand without further modification. The lack of understanding would lead to further Chaos. Planets in every solar system aligned as the will of the Ysari affected the baseline reality of the galaxy. Planetary bodies moved, grew, and changed. Several systems lost planets even as others gained them, an instantaneous Feng-Shui of galactic proportions. The Ysari touched upon the minds of the sapients crawling through the spiral of stars, seeking understanding.

Even as the Ysari felt the galaxy tense under the modifications, the Ysari felt a concept from a small world in the outer edge of the middle ring of the galaxy that suited the purpose. The Ysari employed the concept immediately, utilizing an inherent function of the concept itself to reward the sapient that had been firing neurons in a pattern relevant to the needs of the being of Law.
A full zeptosecond had passed from the beginning of the Epoch of Law. The Ysari, having reversed entropy, changed the placement of every atom in the galaxy, and announced its own existence for the first time, let itself seep further into reality, becoming a part of the natural structure of existence. The being suffused existence and settled into being a natural force of the physical world.

A Burglar, a Lawman, his scent hound, a Hitman, and a Hellhound chase each other through a very Spooky Forest on a quest for absolution, understanding, mercy, and fulfilment of duty. The story is mildly Slavic-fantasy, with a guest appearance from Baba Yaga and her house on hen's feet. It contains tight personal stakes and none of the human characters have magic powers or superhuman abilities. Nothing bad happens to the dog.
