《Re: Rabbit Eyes [Draft]》[Arc 1] Chapter 2 - The Inconsequential Death of a Pawn

[Omitted: White gets shot. The other personality of White takes over after falling unconscious for a few seconds.]
I stared at my hands dyed in red.
I...I... I killed someone. It wasn't supposed to be like this. I followed that older sister like she said...! They wouldn't resist, she said! There wasn't going to be anyone coming, she said!!! I've gained strength... and even gotten hold of this gun... but... but... I didn't really expect...
AHHH...AHHHHHHH...
...I-It's okay, calm down Toshii. No one's around except for these two, I'll finish that woman off as well so there's no witnesses tonight.
I'm okay.
The money, right, where's the money. That's what I'm here for in the first place, it is easy money like she said right?
What's the problem? My days of scraping by for a living are finally going to be over before I know it!!!
Hahaha!!! Ha-haha.. It's fine, we're going to be rich. They're never gonna find me... That's right, it's fine Toshii Harikiri.
It's a one time thing, it was an accident. Even if I was caught, they'll rule out the possibility of an intentional murder and lower my sentence right? Right? I'm not getting caught anyway! Killing a brat or two makes no difference. In fact, isn't the money coming into my bag like a fountain right now?
Why have I never done this before?! Kukuku, just the thought of getting away with this much money... I can't resist it~
?! Eh?
A stupid voice came out of my mouth involuntarily.
H-he's..
I turned around and faced who was talking.
HE'S NOT DEAD?! H-how is he...
W-what's with this brat?! He's fucking scary! Smiling faintly at me like that with the gun pointed towards me...!
This feeling... I need to get away from that kid this very instant...!!!
?! M-my body... my body is frozen...?! I can't move an inch!!!
I could sense a feeling of dread coming from the depths of my heart.
T-this doesn't make sense!! That kid is so weak! W-why am I this scared of him!?
My legs... they won't budge too!!! Fuck! Fuck! FUCKKK!!! Fucking move, MOVEEE!!!
"...Huh, your motivations are shown clearly on your face. You're all talk, ...like everyone else.
Down to very end, ...you're just someone without conviction to your goals.

A mindless puppet, a worshipper of money."
The man stumbled onto the ground, wide-eyed. He was being overwhelmed with a dreadful aura of fear that was suddenly emitted from White.
No, that wasn't a conversation at all. It was a one-sided coercion.
As White finished those words, the man fainted with foam in his mouth.
The mental strain from the unbearable feeling of fear had whittled down his consciousness completely.
"Wow, seriously? ...As expected of low-life.
...Stuff like these... I'm not created for stuff like these. Force me out for petty stuff like this again and I'm seriously going to be pissed."
White narrowed his eyes, as he dusted his right shoulder elegantly of dirt. It was extremely uncharacteristic of him to do so, as if...
He had just let another personality take over.
"Tch."
The stinging pain from the bullet hit him in the stomach, and he quickly discarded the handgun away to return support to his stomach with both hands.
He was clutching with whatever little strength he had left to stop the blood from leaking out of his wound. This was something he had learnt in a discovery program on one of the streaming channels online.
He quickly darted his eyes around to access his current situation. He needed a bandage and someone to do it for him. Taking the bullet out was secondary.
Calling the ambulance as well, he thought.
He noticed the female clerk trembling behind the counter with her hands over her head. She was crouching and curled up, whispering something repeatedly like a broken recorder.
"I'm not at fault... I'm not at fault... I'm not at fault... I'm not at fault... I'm not at fault... I'm not at fault... I'm not at fault..."
"...Oh? You're still around? Now that's admirable... A good opportunity to display your full capabilities as a lovely assistant of this store has arrived, how about y-"
As if breaking down the last form of fear resistance in her heart, the clerk collapsed too upon noticing White approaching with an intimidating stature.
"..."
What to do now, he surveyed his surroundings.
Right now, White was thinking extremely coldly and logically.
The wound had cut deep into his stomach, and it wouldn't be wise to remove it himself. He would bleed to death very quickly if he did not stop the open wound first.

"...That settles my next course of act-"
Before he could finish his words, White collapsed onto the floor. His body temperature was becoming lower.
(...This body is weaker than I thought.)
(I guess this is the end... ...This is a very... Unsatisfying ending.)
White lost consciousness, and died at this very moment.
A moment after, as if waiting for the right time to show up, a figure appeared before the entrance of the convenience store.
It woke the man up with a slight nudge on his right cheek playfully with a malicious smile.
"N...nngh... W-where am I..."
"Aha~ You're awake~ Toshii, it's me~"
"H-hiiiiiiiiiiii!!! S-sister?! It-it's an accident! It's not me! It's not me! It's not meee!!!"
"Of course, I know~ I've seen the entire thing happen, you didn't do it willingly right? Someone forced you to pull the trigger right~?"
"!! T-That's right, sister! You-...You believe in me right...?"
"Yes, of course~ That said though..."
The figure looked around and saw the unconscious clerk and the boy lying on a trail of blood.
"...That's quite the mess you made...mmm~?"
"A-ahhh..."
As if reminded of what had transpired within the store, the man clutched his own head with both of his hands.
"Heehee~ Don't worry about it, I'll take care of it. You're here for the money right~? What are you waiting for, go on~ All of that money is yours~"
"H-Huehh? I-I can take... I can take them...?"
"Sure~! Go on, take it and leave~ You're rich now, don't let anyone tell you otherwise~!"
"S-Sister...hah... hahaha... You're right, they're all mine. All mine... haha... hahahahahaha..."
Spurred on by the instigator, the man laughed erratically while moving over to the counter to grab the bag full of banknotes.
When he had done so, he did not bother conversing with the figure anymore.
His goal had been accomplished.
Now all he needed to do was to get away.
Get as far as possible, away from this place.
Away from people who are definitely going to go after him. He would have to change his identity eventually, but he wasn't thinking that far ahead for now.
For now, he started to run. It didn't matter where he ran.
He just needed to get out of there.
He crossed a road without waiting for the traffic light to turn green.
There were no cars this late into the night, he thought.
Someone believed in him. He didn't kill anyone. He was fine. He was rich. No one would find him.
He shouldn't have left anything behind the crime scene.
His hypocritical way of thinking made him recall something important.
...
That's right, the gun! The gun had my fingerprints!
Why had he not thought of using gloves!
It was something that was suggested to him just recently, so he did not do any intricate planning.
But how could he possibly forget something like that!?
It was as if someone had planted a hypnotic suggestion to make him forget something this important on purpose.
Just as he turned back to the store halfway across the road, his life shortly ended with the sudden passing of a rapidly speeding truck that went past his field of vision.
CRASH!
It just sped away like that, and crashed into a building without stopping.
The figure ignored all of this, and moved over to the body of the dead man.
"Splendid, absolutely splendid~ You have accomplished your mission very well~ Your purpose this time has ended splendidly. ...It's my turn now~ Well, don't mind it too much, you're still enough for a light snack~
Thank you anyway, random mister~"
The figure laughed softly, and retrieved a string-like substance from the wrist of the man's dead body.
Then she put it into her mouth.
"...Not really to my liking. This one's not really matured enough... What I'm looking forward though..."
The figure returned inside the convenience store and arrived before the body of White. It bent down slowly and looked at White.
"Is you~"
Planting a similar-looking string into the wrist of White, it chuckled sinisterly.
"I can't wait~ How will you grow from now, I wonder~ I honestly can't wait at all~"
Then it left the store with a leisurely pace.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

High School DEATH GAMES
"'Why,' a woman asked me, 'would they show a movie with things I do not want to see?' She is not unusual. Most people choose movies that provide exactly what they expect, and tell them things they already know. Others are more curious. We are put on this planet only once, and to limit ourselves to the familiar is a crime against our minds." - From the Great Roger Ebert Be forewarned, this story is not for everyone. It's not even for some people. This is for just a select few who get wet from misery and excited by suffering. This is no level up, power up, let's kill monsters, op mc, fantasy land, standard litrpg garbage you find in basically every other story on this site. If the rest of RoyalRoad is shounen (which it is), then this is Gantz/Berserk. Sorry. I lied. This is darker than Berserk and bloodier than Gantz. Not a manga fan? Then how about Korean cinema? Have you heard of Kim Ki-duk? His works The Isle, Moebius, and Pieta all come to mind. Again, this is not for normal people. There's a bunch of other normal stories for normal people to read. The whole rest of the site library is for normal. This is a special section set aside for a special type of story meant for a special kind of people. If you follow or favorite this, you're telling the whole world that you're a little different. A bit twisted. I guess you could call it the BDSM of reading. Which segues perfectly into the introduction. Are you kinky? Are you familiar with the taboo? Have you ever thought about the depths of human depravity? What I'm trying to ask is, do you like fucked up shit? Do you like massacres and public shamings? Do you like watching people fall into despair, going insane, or turning into psychopaths? Do you get turned on when love is destroyed and hedonism reigns king? Well, I've got the perfect story for you! If you're uncomfortable with profanity, gore, sexual and traumatising content, then I recommend you move on. I won't judge you just cause you're a pussy. And I'm not talking about the fake labels of the other candy ass stories on this site who think their shit is morbid or even remotely disturbing, I'm talking about the shocking, offensive, real fucked up shit that you can't even use incognito mode for and you gotta install Tor browser. (You don't actually need to install Tor, you idiot.) If you love that shit or even if you're just curious, then read on. I swear it's not as bad as you think it'll be. It's much worse. - Signed with no love, Marley (written by a friend in the voice of Marley) Unapologetic, cynical, pretentious, pessimistic, hypocritical, selfish, sarcastic, passive, apathetic asshole main character named Marley. Alternate POV: Badass, intelligent, proactive, loving, nice, friendly, optimistic co-main character Sophia. This is essentially a rough draft. Grammar and spelling has been read through and fixed for the most part. If you don't like something, tell me why you don't like it. Don't just rate it low anonymously. Thanks.
