《Beastmastery - A LitRPG Novel》Chapter 27

When she came to her senses again, she realised that her escape had worked.
The Wurm had taken another massive bite out of the wall behind her, and rubble was still rolling down on top of her. She wasn't safe yet though, the Wurm spat out the stones and shook its head, still frustrated that it could not hurt her. She could see that her companions were making their way over and that they were pouring everything they had into the beast hoping to attract its attention. It was taking damage, but it looked like whatever mechanics had been programmed for it to turn around and attack the source of damage, was being ignored. It made fizzing and crackling sounds through its slimy mouth, clearly in some pain but it didn't turn around. She figured it was looking for her but because of where she was lying and the amount of rubble from the walls on top of her; it wasn't able to see exactly where she was. She decided to lay still. With the face of the Wurm only inches from her, she could see two holes which must have been its nostrils. They were sucking in the air, sniffing, hoping to seek her out.
"What's going on Anika, are you all right?"
She could hear Beth roaring with rage and Felix shouting at her from behind the Wurm.
Anika didn't want to push her luck by shouting a reply, but she also couldn't just lie there doing nothing. It wouldn't be long before the Wurm had figured out where she was and from this distance, it could swallow her in one bite if it wanted to. In that moment she pulled out her skinning knife, looked at the small sharp blade and thought to herself that it would be pointless and reckless to attack it from where she was. At the same time, the nostrils of the beast were only within arms reach and there were no protective scales in front of the holes.

Thinking no further, she stabbed her knife as deep as she could into one nostril. The beast felt that. It jolted its head backwards, and she lost her grip on the knife. Then she got on her knees and tried to slide along the wall to get as far away from it as possible.
"Good work, we've got it now. Give it everything you've got." Felix shouted.
She could see that the Wurm had less than 10% health left, so if they were lucky, they could finish it before it went under the ground again. She found a good dry patch and stood up to let her arrows fly as fast as possible.
With only 2% of its health left, the beasts went under the ground again. The ground rumbled, signalling to everyone it was about to reappear almost as fast as it went away. Instead of bracing himself, Felix walked around as if he was looking for something on the ground.
"Everybody come over here," he motioned to the ground in front of him, which was a large area of dry cobblestone. Anika joined the others and waited for his instructions. Whatever he had planned, it was a different tactic from before.
"We missed our chance guys, I've seen this thing happen before. My guess is that it will come out of the ground with more health, it'll be back at 10%. We need to stay in the same spot and not worry about who gets hit first. Whatever happens, we need to take it down before it has another chance to go underground."
Just as he had finished his sentence, the Wurm reappeared a short distance from them. There was no way of telling who it would target, but Beth charged ahead and did her best to distract it before it reached them. It didn't take any notice of her and just kept moving towards them.

"Don't worry about the aggro guys, just hit it with everything you've got and pray that we survive this last part."
Felix was braced for the attack with what looked like a green hue covering his boots and the lower parts of his legs. Right before the Wurm was within range of taking a bite, Felix moved two steps to the side, which made it clear that the worm was targeting him. As it opened its jaws and moved its head back to prepare for the strike, Felix was gone in a flash. The Wurm's attack landed right where he had stood, but to their relief, he hadn't been hit. He was already on the side of it, stabbing and slicing frantically at its armour. Everybody joined in now, Beth with her massive paws, Lilia with her fireballs and Anika with her basic arrows.
They got the better of the Wurm in the very nick of time. It was half way through a puddle, about to do its disappearing act, when it received a fatal blow from Felix and his daggers. They all sat around the corpse panting for a few moments after the fight. It had been exhausting, mentally and physically, and nobody was in high enough spirits to congratulate each other just yet.

Shades of the Moon
I'm rewriting this story! I have taken down Arc 2 and Arc 3 already to avoid spoiling my new novel. The only reason I'm keeping the first 10 chapters is nostalgia; the writing is awkward and the story is not plotted out properly, but it's here if anyone wants to compare it to the new one. If you'd like to read a more professionally written version of this story, I highly suggest checking out my Synergy. Synopsis version too-many-to-count: “I see,” Kiona said. “But . . . you’re changing once again, aren’t you?” The entity considered her question, lifting a clawed hand towards the night sky. They observed the back of their hand idly, watching the glowing orange veins pulse alongside their pitch-black exoskeleton. The wind picked up right then, and Kiona shivered—just as much from the cold as from the savage grin on the creature's face. “That’s right,” the entity said, clenching their hand slowly into a fist. They let out a quiet laugh, staring defiantly at the Moon as it rose from behind the clouds. “We are shades, yet not exactly. Not like the others. Here, in this world, we've become something more. We are the Shades of the Moon.” There was a heartbeat of silence, during which Kiona joined the entity in their skygazing. The light-green Moon loomed over the city, shining like the entity's eyes. It promised otherworldly knowledge and terrible secrets. It promised progress. It promised change. In that moment, Kiona couldn't have imagined anything more beautiful. “Shades of the Moon, huh?” she said, smiling a bit. It had a nice ring to it.
