《The Demon of Shadows (Hiatus)》Chapter 20

Nicholas having immobilized the Mage and Thief for now, diverted his attention to the Paladin and Spearman. He wasn’t one for endurance battles as he didn’t have the tenacity, and after the battle with the Orc Warlord, he was practically dead himself as he barely mustered enough strength to keep himself on his feet. He reminisced over his health which stood at a staggeringly low amount of 64 since he had last checked, inciting a type of anxiety to grow forth from his confidence before he resolved himself, to both win the battle and live through this hardship.
Nicholas positioned himself into an offensive posture as he stood tall, emanating confidence and fear from his figure. He had been through worse he remembered, the times where he was cornered, destined to die, but saved in the nick of time, by his comrades… by those long lost. He sighed, no time for regret nor grief he pestered himself as he returned his vision to the spearman who ran at him, the sound of his heavy feet falling upon the dirt alerting him as the rage evident in his eyes became more more lucid and coherent. Piercing at Nicholas as he did with his spear, an assault of spearheads converged on him, it seemed to be an active skill of sorts.
Nicholas moved his body low to the ground in but a second as he followed with a kick to the spearman's ankle, catching him off balance as he gradually fell to the ground. But the spearman had other plans as he proceeded with using his spear to support his fall, keeping him upright. Afterwards following with a kick of his own as it came into contact with Nicholas’ face disorienting him. Enraged seeing his friends in agony, and arrogant having now gotten the demon to submit itself to the ground, the Spearman ran to Nicholas, spear held high, plunging forth at him as he smiled in ecstasy, a byproduct from the arrogance he held so highly.

But it was used against him as the Demon rolled away from the point of impact, allowing the power behind the spear to carry itself into the ground as it was embedded inches deep into it’s crust surface. Nicholas, having seen this, used the momentum from the roll to carry him to his feet, rushing at the spearman with the added adrenaline and bloodlust that writhed within him. The spearman returned the Demon’s gaze with his own, surprise and terror colouring his face as it was followed with the sounds of agony, his throat had been torn apart in a flurry of strikes. Blood, spurted forth, colouring Nicholas, a depiction of bloodshed and fear taking place on Nicholas’ body, the canvas for the paint. The Paladin turned pale at the death of his friend who lay motionless on the ground, covered in his blood as he held tightly to his throat in a frantic mess before succumbing to the pain.
The Paladin then looked back to the Demon from after healing the Mage. She now lay unconscious and healthy by his side, torn fabric and a scar being the only sign of battle as she rested quietly upon the floor. The demon had disappeared from sight, fear and anxiety plastered the Paladin’s face before being wiped off by an unprecedented impact to the back of his neck, knocking him unconscious due to such a great force as he slumped forward onto the Mage.
Nicholas now safe and well, looked at the aftermath of the battle, all 5 adventurers lay on the floor, exasperated, and on the border of life and death. Silence, once again permeated the room, as he focused solely on his familiar. The succubus, after having witnessed both the destruction of the Lesser Orc Warlord and beating of the adventurers, had lost all hope in preserving her life, and with it, Nicholas’ chances at salvaging this wreck of turmoil. He unsummoned his familiar and began to revitalize himself, restoring himself to his prime and whilst doing so, picked up the pair of daggers equipped by the thief and placed them in his empty sheathes, looting the rest of the youthful, unconscious adventurers afterwards.

After his looting, he came upon numerous potions ranging from Health to Mana. There being a total of 5 health and 3 mana potions, he then borrowed a bag to store them in from the spearman's bloodied corpse. Where Nicholas lightly lifted his corpse to grab it in its pristine condition, albeit torn here and there as he strapped it to his back. He then returned his gaze to the spearman's corpse, his life forfeit to death. He sighed, he hadn’t meant to kill the young youth, but his bloodlust… it just, dominated him during the battle, took over him. He sighed, there was no point reminiscing over the past, it would just be more time wasted. He transferred his gaze to the way he came from before jogging back to the exit, making his way over corpses of goblins and orcs obstructing his path.
As he finally found the exit, greeting him with green lands and sounds of life, he breathed in the fresh and clear air, not that of the battlefield or the dungeon, but of peace and tranquility. He looked to Novac, for once, he felt like taking a rest for the day, from all the violence and killing as he thought of stocking up on supplies for his travels. Departing from the overgrowth of vegetation that surrounded the exterior of the dungeon. But as Nicholas walked his way to Novac, through the underbrush and vegetation, full of life and activity. He felt like he needed something, something to drive his motivation, a goal.
In the past, on Reach, he had been assigned missions, acting as his goals, although short and temporary, they were goals. His long term goals being along the lines of defeating the covenant and insurgents that assaulted and plagued his planet en masses. But now, in this new world, free of both covenant and insurgents. What was he born to do, what was his purpose? Nicholas looked to the sun taking in it’s beauty as it radiated a great luminescence that shrouded the land in warmth and love. Something Nicholas was not familiar with, something unknown to him, much like this very world, much like him... And then he had it, for but a brief second, he knew what he would use as his goal. To understand the unknown, the inexplicable, be it his emotions, the world before him, and other people. He would grow to understand them, to become them. He would regain his humanity.
He placed it as his new goal, a type of motivation to strive for as he held it deeply within his heart. The sensation of a small spark, an ember, igniting a raging fire within the depths of his heart, his will to live, as he soaked in it’s beauty and splendor. He was not going to survive in this despicable universe, but he was going to live...
