《Syche: The Dark Element》Prologue: The Dying Dark

I knelt beside the dead body, the corpse that spread out like an endless expanse before me. My hand plunged into the ink-like mixture and came out only holding fumes, wisps. I turned my hand over as I watched the last droplets of black melt into the air.
The rest too would fade away before the day was done.
It made me shiver in excitement, only one more. I'd stood before the exact scene time and again, days ago, centuries ago, it all blended together. Yet this one, the only one to make me dread. It was the Dark. The pure unknown, pure evil, pure everything humanity always fought against. Dead.
I considered sitting, draping my feet into that putrid black lake that choked the valley now. Surely there could be no harm in it. But the instinctual fear was there. That fear of “what if?” Below us, I imagined the black soaking into cracks and crevices, tainting the rivers, smothering life, taking what it could with it. One last hurrah and its last act of evil.
No, that isn't fair, I thought. It was never evil. It was what man made it.
I slowly eased to my feet and dusted off.
"What are you looking for?" a man's voice said.
My head jerked up to look at the figure standing next to me– an old friend, an accomplice in what we had achieved today. One of us had killed this thing; I absentmindedly patted the dagger at my waist. We both knew it was me. In another hundred years, he'd probably forget and deny my achievement. He could have it, as long as the deed was done.
My friend stepped forward and thrust his knapsack into my hands with no warning. "Hold that for a second," he ordered. He opened the flap and revealed two large books. There might as well have been only one for all the attention that it drew. The one that shone like the sun, pure and radiant. Light incarnate. He pulled the other out carelessly and left me holding the Book of Light.

Stooping to his knees in front of the lake of blackness, my old friend submerged the other book. The darkness wisped like smoke as he pushed further in until the black changed composition and stuck like clawing slime up to his elbow.
However long he stayed like that is too far back for me to remember, but eventually, he pulled his arm out and with it the book. Its cover now shone with the purest black imaginable. It was like my friend held the void itself. A perfect contrast to the Book of Light I now held. What a pair of twins these two would make.
He motioned for the radiant book I held and, together, placed them back in his knapsack, Light and Dark in their new home.
"Our work is almost done,” I said. “Only four Elements remain: Blood, Release, Metal, and Conduction.”
"That," my friend began, "will not be easy. The Elements are protected and our numbers are too few for war. Not again." I looked at him. I expected some grand twist to his words. Surely he would know the way forward. "I think I'm done. I've worked hard and I can live in the world we've made. At least I think so.”
I was shocked. This man had never promised me anything, but this was betrayal. An unthinkable, gut-twisting betrayal. And, of course, he read it in my eyes.
"Not everything can be revenge," he said. "We've scourged the world, and taken all but the remaining four elements from the Psychics. The bloodlines that control the Elements are almost extinguished." He looked me up and down and shook his head. His hand rose with some new weight and patted my shoulder, as if that was some sort of consolation, and began to walk off.

I turned in disbelief. Anger? For years after, it was easy to imagine I was angry, but I see now that wasn't the case. I felt nothing, too in shock to process any emotion. The anger was a fiction I invented because of what happened next.
As he strode off, his back turned, I followed and unsheathed the dagger at my waist.
Perhaps it's just in my nature.

When Immortal Ascension Fails Time Travel to Try Again
What is my 1000-year-old monster self to do when I’ve failed my immortal ascension? Time travel — accidentally — and wind up back in my 9-year-old body, needing to re-cultivate, of course. But after that? Get REVENGE! Muahahahaha! But the idiot who killed me — also accidentally — was the main character of the dumb harem Xianxia I transmigrated into. But wait. Wasn’t he only 7 or 8 at this point in time? Well, since I can’t harm a child or the main character without suffering in some way, then I’ll just have to raise him better, faster, stronger, and loyal! Muahahahaha! This is a Xianxia comedy and satire by the author of Cold Steel Dig and Tome of Stealth. But it is also a series of interconnected and chronological short stories (featuring the same main characters). Updates Every Thursday. Find it on Top Web Fiction!

8 105Lorian Ellins [Dropped]
Lorian found himself in the medieval European style world, thinking he went back in time. However, upon inquiring, he realized history, customs and as such were different. This was a whole new world he knew nothing about. A place where powerful were respected and feared, a place where monsters and different races existed. After a lucky encounter, Lorian manages to secure a job, home and survival. However, the world is large and ready to be explored. Lorian won't be lost in mediocrity. This is his destiny. Nonetheless, everyone starts at a low point in life. Fast growth and OPness seemed impossible even with the help of the system. , Life is neither a game nor a bunch of numbers. It's far more complex and unpredictable. We don't know where we stand in the future, or is there even future prepared for us? I always thought that overused motto in wuxia novels, '' I want to control my destiny '' was cliche and we had less control over our lives as they are dictated by many other factors. This world taught me otherwise, thus this place shall be my new beginning. '' PS: The cover is not mine. It was randomly found on the internet. The cover was edited by Nefarious. https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/20337/the-pale-orphan - Link to his fiction

8 98The Kings of Thendor - The Two Kings
To some, it would probably be obvious. To others – not so much. In the land of Thendor, where magic is mysterious, unmentioned, and sometimes even disbelieved; where kings, queens, and stewards rule, the ages-old kingdom of Alldel remains without its king. Heirs come and go and no one can explain why each one chooses to abdicate to the steward. And who are these heirs, anyway? Some say the line of kings is dead, while others whisper of magic. Some, though few they are, will tell you other kingdoms have interfered, keeping the line of kings from rising in the nation of Alldel. But why? Adric, son of Cassian, heir to the throne of Alldel has come of age and must answer the question, whether to assume the throne, or abdicate as his ancestors had done for centuries. Raised as a blacksmith by a family friend, Adric struggles with the decision to take up his place as King of Alldel, and to make matters worse, a neighboring kingdom has confirmed the rumors of the common folk. An impossibly old king with a centuries-old message arrives and changes Adric’s life in ways he could never have imagined. Adric must decide the future, and perhaps even the fate of the great kingdom of Alldel. Unprepared for this turn of events, he enlists the help of allied kingdoms and even the mystical nymphs of the Tulusbian forest. Some say his actions will start a war on the continent of Thendor. Ohers say he is resurrecting a long forgotten one from centuries ago. Abdicate, or become king? To some, it would probably be obvious. To others – not so much.
