Prologue

I really cannot get enough of the out doors.

When people ask me “John, why do you go camping all the time?” I answer “Because out there on the dark, starry nights you feel alive.”

I could kick myself right now, if I could.

I made the amateur mistake of wandering around in an out of the way place without telling anyone.

I have all the night sky I could ask for.

I have all the quiet and peace I could ever ask for.

I have got to be one of the dumbest sons of bitches alive.

Because I am a dead man.

I went out into wilderness without watching where I stepped.

Do you know what the worst sensation is?

It isn't the rumble as weight moves under your footsteps.

It isn't the loss of balance as the ground collapses.

Or even the endless sensation of falling...

No it is landing so very, very hard that you feel nothing, ever again.

So now I'm trapped, with a broken neck.

I fell down a mine shaft from the gold rush era.

I guess all I can do is just stare up at the night sky through this tiny shaft and wait to die.

It sure is pretty.

I guess there are worse ways to die.
