《AS LONG AS IT'S INTERESTING, ISN'T IT FINE TO LIVE AS A DUNGEON? (Hiatus)》Chapter 1 : What On - Not Earth?

[Little Girl] You can eat me so please become a good dungeon lord!
These words were said by a young girl, probably no more than 12 years old. Her head was on the floor and she was shaking. Her sandy brown pigtail braids were starting to get dirty from being on the dirty floor.
Has it been too long since I’ve been able to think? Or is it that I’ve been thinking too much and my mind is tired. I can’t tell anymore. It’s been awhile since I was completely unable to keep up. And what’s with this abnormally smooth cave anyways.
[Eita] Ok you’ll have to help me catch up on the hell is going on. My brain feels like I haven’t slept in a week. So. My name is Eita. Who are you and what’s going on? You might be cute but I dont have those kinds of hobbies ok?
[Saeri] Um... I'm Saeri. I'm representing the village just over there. We wanted to help a dungeon near our lands to help revitalize the economy.
uuu. I guess I heard them say summoning before the light happened. This.... isn’t Earth is it. I’m sure if Earth had any kind of summoning it would’ve been abused to death by the rich and famous already. Anyways, more info, less panic. Panicking always makes things worse.
[Eita] Well... I sort of have an inkling of what a lot of what you just said means I guess? Either way. Where are the adults? You don't look like you're some big shot magician that can perform summonings.
[Saeri] Well, it would be bad if the dungeon ate everyone. So um please just eat me and don't hurt the other villagers. I even brought some offerings if you’re not satisfied with just me.
[Eita] Why do you think I'm going to eat you? Or rather, if you thought it was dangerous, shouldn't it be an adult or something?

[Saeri] It's pretty normal for new dungeons to just eat whatever they can to gain power. A lot of dungeons don’t really think and talk for quite a while. I wouldn't want the others to get hurt. And um I've been free loading off of them since my parents passed away. I have to repay them somehow. The village chief said this was the best way. At least this way I'll be of some use to the village.
So basically she was forced by the village chief huh. Asshole. Who makes a 12 year old risk their lives while they sit back and reap the benefits?
I sigh and pat her head. We’ve got to get over this misunderstanding first I suppose.
[Eita] You can stop shaking now. I'm not going to eat you.
[Saeri] Eh? You won't? But um you'll gain power and stuff if you consume humans.
[Eita] But it's not a requirement that I eat you right? It's fine so get on with the explanations already.
It's going to be a long day.
I look around while Saeri was explaining. Surroundings : Cave. Climate : Warm and a bit dry. Cave walls : Abnormally smooth. Items of interest : A dead rabbit, on a bed of flowers and leaves. Saeri probably spent a while making it presentable. Handy exposition : adorable little sandy haired girl. I’ll have to hug her later a bunch later. Also, my dungeon core, a fist sized piece of amethyst, deep purple. Ah, but it’s not like I’m not paying attention to the explanation ok?
[Eita] Long story short, the village and the surrounding areas have been suffering due to poor crop yields and fewer traders and travelers. Luckily some religious group got an oracle saying a dungeon crystal would become active here. I got summoned by some god or another as the soul to drive make the damned thing function and now my life is now tied to this dungeon heart crystal.

I poke at the fist sized piece of amethyst that was in the back of the cave.
[Eita] Furthermore, dungeons can turn mana from things, living beings, and nature into items and monsters. This will provide resources and incentives for people to visit. They wanted to let the dungeon eat you and give it a mana boost so that it would make things faster and attract people. In other words, they are a bunch of assholes sacrificing a little girl for their own gain. Are you sure you don't want me to teach them a lesson?
[Saeri] I don't want to hurt the village. It is where I grew up and spent time with my family after all. Plus I was nominated by the village chief so I've got to live up to the responsibility.
[Eita] Well. First things first. It's getting late and I do NOT want to sleep out in a cave. Let's see if I can learn enough to make some lodgings for us today. Fastest way to learn is to dive right in I suppose.
[Saeri] Um I should be able to give you some information. I've read up about dungeons since I've been chosen. As for your dungeon, as long as the crystal core can be reached from the outside, it's fine. As long as there is a path, the mana can flow to it. I don't think anybody will come explore so soon after the summoning anyways.
[Eita] Smart kids are great. Saves me so much time. No cheating and locking away the core. Well, it wouldn't be interesting if it was an unbeatable game right?

Contact First
2039 - Earth A narrow beam energy signal appeared aimed squarely at earth from the TRAPPIST system. The communication consisted of a layered set of repeating data over several thousand wavelengths. Over the next few months scientists discovered that the lower wavelengths carried an encoded numerical language which could then be used to interpret the more complicated messages carried on the higher wavelengths. After half a year of painstaking work the signal was fully decoded. It described a small satellite launched along a precise trajectory towards the fourth planet of our solar system. Included was a package of advanced research that humanity would need to have ready in order to receive the satellite and decelerate it safely. The alien data provided the kick that humanity needed to turn from petty squabbling and unite to explore the final frontier. Major government and corporate leaders worked together to create the framework for the United Federation of Sol. UFS spaceports went from scaffolding to daily launches in every major city around the globe. Ships floated like dandelion seeds, spreading on solar wind to grow into colonies. 2397 - Mars orbit, Egeria Station The command center was a hive of activity as checks were conducted and systems initialized. Scientists flitted by like mayflies as communicators beeped and holoscreens spat out green tinted readouts. Nervous energy was thick in the air as everyone anticipated the culmination of over three hundred years of work. Massive fusion reactors under the planet's surface thrummed with barely restrained power as energy fed into a gleaming metallic maze criss crossing the planet. Metal fingers reached up, overshadowing the mighty olympus mons and trying to grab the stars. All over the solar system, people quickly turned to look as gigantic energy lances shot from the dusty fourth planet. Two years later. The same people that clapped loudly at the successful activation of project Hermes now wait with baited breath. A silver capsule trailing bright photonic sails is captured by a net of grav beams and guided with care bordering on reverence into the station. Holoscreens across the headquarters project an image of the sleek craft settling in the bay. Data connections are established and the holoscreens blink to white. Slowly an image forms on the screen. Across the headquarters people stare in wonder as a wholly alien face stares back. "Contact established. Welcome to the universe."

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
