《The Depths of Magic》Chapter 24 - Choosing a class

After passing through the portal Locke noticed the room he was now standing in was familiar. This was where it all started, the first room. The same table and chair were present in the center of the room indicated that once he sat down it will trigger the next event.
Locke however didn't sit down right away, he wanted to go through his notifications and rewards first. The dungeon reward was selecting a class and he was too excited to wait any longer. He opened his menus and accepted the reward without hesitation. What awaited him was a large list of classes to choose from.
Oh.....okay....that is a lot to go through, lets review this carefully.
One Armed Master
- You cannot regrow your missing arm.
- +3 attribute points to spend per level
Prerequisite: Spent most of the tutorial missing an arm and somehow prevailed.
Magus
- Intelligence stat provides slightly more benefits to mana control
- Gain mastery over mana related passives faster then other classes
- +1 intelligence attribute gained per level
Prerequisite: Spent a large amount of time honing your mana control skills throughout the tutorial.
Assassin
- 25% damage increase to enemies that are not aware of your presence
- You are harder to detect when trying to remain hidden
- +2 Agility attribute points gained per level
Prerequisite: Killed many enemies who were not aware of your presence
Masochist
- 50% of health regeneration will continue while not consuming stamina.
- +2 Vitality attribute points gained per level
Prerequisite: You know what you did.
Oh come on!
Enhancer
- Able to slot 1 self enhancement sigil for free with some limitations, must meet requirements. This Sigil ignores stacking penalties.
- Your free Sigil will not allow you to gain any sort of mastery.
- Receive 1 less attribute point to spend per level
Prerequisite: Spent a large amount of time with an active enhancement spell.
Brawler
- Fists and Feet are 50% more durable compared to other parts of the body. This is based on the endurance stat.
- Gain mastery with unarmed combat faster than other classes.
- +1 Strength and Endurance attribute points gained per 2 levels

Wizard

Prerequisite: Used many different kinds of elemental magic throughout the tutorial.
Priest
- All holy element spells cost 20% less mana and have 20% increased mana capacity
- Holy element healing and status removing spells are 100% more effective.
Prerequisite: Used holy based healing magic throughout the tutorial.
Locke understood that this decision wasn't an easy one, especially since there was most likely no way to change it later. There was also the question of if advanced classes existed and would they branch off from these, or be a separate class entirely. Was there multiclassing? None of this information was provided to the playerbase at all. Locke decided to shelve these thoughts for now and started narrowing down the class options.
The Wizard, Cryomancer, Electromancer, and Pyromancer classes were interesting. How Locke understood the system 20% reduced mana cost meant the mana you are using is more efficient for damage. If a classless player used 100 mana to cast a firebolt it would be the same damage as a pyromancer who used 80 (Not including the damage buff the class gives). There was also the added benefit of more capacity allowing your spells top end damage to be much stronger when specialized into an element. Wizard was a bit weaker, but more flexible. Either way Locke decided not to choose these classes. It wasn't because he thought they would be weak, he just didn't want to be a pure mage at this point.
For this same reason he wasn't going to choose priest either. It was interesting that all healing spells were more potent by choosing this class. That answered the question as to why healing felt weak during the tutorial. Everybody has the potential to be able to heal themselves, the problem was that it's not efficient unless you are a designated healing class.
Swordsman and Brawler seemed pretty weak at first glance, but he wasn't exactly sure how much extra mastery you would gain through those classes. If mastery worked like it was explained by the developers than it is extremely important to rank those up. For example the passive for sword mastery states that you have increased swing speed with swords, but that is just the basic description. What it actually means is you are cutting unnecessary movements out of your swordsmanship. There was also the fact that it improves the Second Brain system to assist your actions making you more skilled overall. This could be the difference between choosing the right move instead of the wrong move in an intense battle where ever decision mattered.

Due to these reasons Locke had no idea how good these classes could be. Brawler also had the added benefit of making your fists and feet more durable which sounded cool. He was picturing players blocking attacks with their bare hands. These classes were not interesting enough for him though, especially with the other options available.
Locke knew he wasn't going to choose One Armed Master, but honestly it was probably the best choice from a min max perspective. The reason was there are most likely many ways later in the game to get around not having an arm. Once you figured that out you're set because having +3 attributes per level is on the high side. Some other options had +2 on a specific attribute like Assassin and Masochist, whereas this was 3 of your choice. Having a choice is always better than not.
Going to have to be wary of players that are missing an arm from now on I think.
Assassin looked like a strong choice and fit his play style. This would have been his pick if it were not for the other options. Masochist.....was not for him and he felt like the system was trolling giving out the option. Sure he hurt himself a lot throughout the tutorial with the healing practice and dealing with the 70 strength 5 endurance shenanigans, but come on.....
This left two classes to choose from; Magus or Enhancer. Both classes fit perfectly into what he was trying to do. The question was, which was better? Magus would basically fill a giant weakness Locke believed he had; his lack of talent in mana control. If he could shorten his training wouldn't that be ideal? The class would free up a ton of time for more productive activities. There was also the downside to enhancer where he would lose out on 1 attribute point per level. Compared to magus or other class options that is he is basically missing out on 2 to 3 attributes gains per level.
The main question was how strong were enhancements going to be, the first one already seemed plenty strong. Losing out on attributes might not be as a huge deal when he could just use an enhancement to increase them for no mana cost. The issue was that was all he was getting, it was a huge risk. There was something that was extremely alluring to him though, who else would have enhancements during the tutorial at this point. Nobody, there was no way in hell. Locke's reasoning was that nobody would have triggered the same event he did to acquire the enhancement book.
This meant that enhancer was most likely a unique class that Locke could obtain right now. If nobody has the class than other players would have no idea what he was capable of, especially in PVP scenarios.
I think it's worth the risk, Enhancements are right up my alley and getting a free one sounds amazing. Heck maybe I will get a world first for being the first to receive this class.
Locke made his decision and selected Enhancer, the room filled with light as his class change occurred. He checked his notifications to see if there was a world first notification.
Damn no world first, most likely there isn't any for classes then...was worth a shot I guess. Now to test what this class does.
He played around with the class to see how it worked and what it's limitations were. First thing he noticed is it took absolutely zero effort to activate an enhancement. Locke thought about turning the boost on and it happened. Second thing he noticed which was obvious, it didn't have a mana cost to run which is huge. Third he was able to stack the boost on top of his current one, meaning he can have two strength boosts running at the same time. Normally running two enhancements at the same time had an exponential mana cost increase for the second one cast.
Now for the draw backs, he could not switch his boost around on the fly. The moment he chose an enhancement the ability to swap it to another one had a two minute cooldown period. This meant that Locke could keep an attribute boost running at all times and then change it a single time during combat to fit the situation better. Lastly, the class mentioned that he needed to meet the requirements of the enhancement before it could be run. The physical attribute boost didn't seem to have a requirement, but that was most likely because it was a basic enhancement. Locke could guess why this would be the case There was no way the game was going to let him run a 500 mana cost per second enhancement for free right now.
This class is very interesting, I cannot wait to see what the future enhancements are. Might as well just turn on the agility boost for now.
With nothing else to do he triggered the event by sitting on the chair in the middle of the room.
“Welcome Locke, that was one of the more interesting tutorial outcomes so far. Time to go over a few things before you head to the main game.” The aged robotic voice announced. It was the same voice from the first time Locke was in this room.
