Part 4

When the first building and its surrounding area caught fire, it did not get much the attention I needed. I was hoping for panic from these paranoid guards. But I could only see about a dozen of guards went to check it out. Though I could not make out what they were talking about, this was not good enough.
“Looks like I needed some more firepower then.” I lighted up the building that Rose and I hid and once it caught fire, we immediately ran to the next one.
“Look!! There’s someone’s there!!” What the guard saw was moving bushes. With Rose new ability called Plant Control and Animate, she could now use any of the plants provided that they were lower level than her. Though the numbers that she could animate was limited to just one, it was more than enough to actually to create the scene that I wanted her to.
“And another one is over there, behind the tree!”
“And over there!!”
Looked like it worked. With the two adjacent building now caught on fire and the silhouette of the ‘arsonist’ was spotted, it was no longer just a prank, a natural occurrence, a simple mishap or something to be ignored. The enemy had come as they feared. The guards were starting to mobilize as I predicted.
And then something interesting happened. The two buildings caught fire so well that it exploded and took out a few guards that tried to disperse the fire. The loud noise had an immediate effect. It took every one of the guards that stationed here by surprise and now they were in a panic. Their paranoid had finally kicked in.
Just when I wanted to move on to the next one, I ordered Rose to go and create more diversion as for how I had planned with her earlier. She would control or animate simple movement on bushes or small trees. With her current skills, that was all she could do. Hoping her to create a Treant or a Mandragora was an idle thought at best. Not impossible but for now, this was more than good enough. And Rose could just hide if needed by easily becoming a plant herself. Nifty skills indeed.

“The enemy is over there!”
“We are surrounded!! Call the Captain!!”
I disposed a couple of guards that unknowingly reached near my hiding place where I planned to burn the third building. It was farther than the other two, situated in the middle between the next two buildings in order of my plan. I left the two bodies there purposely as I burned the third building. When it caught on fire, I moved on to my next plan; to actually expose myself and fight my enemies head on while Rose would burn the last three houses and distract them further. If these guards did not see any enemies, they might reconsider to separate their forces. Or worse still, to actually strengthened the place they were guarding.
“Oi, bloody feckers! I have come for your King’s head!” Well, I couldn’t tell them the real reason why I came, right? Besides, mentioning that I wanted to kill the King during the Siege event would definitely make me their number one target.
“T-The enemy! I-I saw him!! He is…” Unfortunately, he could not finish his words as I stabbed him with a dagger from the back, killing him with one hit.
“Over there!!” As the lifeless body felled, two more guards came my way. Surrounded by the flaming building, I let out a loud laugh that penetrated the whole place.
“Is this the best of this pathetic King’s guards can offer?!!” I purposely gave out an uber loud laugh.
“WAHAHAHA!!! Where are your Champions?! Your leaders?!! All of you are dog’s shit for all I care!”
I dodged the first blow that came at me and struck the dagger into his side. He fell down and I kicked the hilt of the dagger deeper into his body. His HP dropped to less than 50% when the second guard came. I took out my sword and before he could do anything, I sidestepped him and slashed his back. The critical counter hit reduced his HP to zero immediately. The first guard tried to stand up but I ended him right at that movement in the most cold-blooded fashion I could muster. As his head rolled on the ground, all the guards that ran towards me froze on their tracks. They were shaking uncontrollably and the look of shock on their face was priceless.

In word one, they were horrified.
“A-A demon!!”
“M-Murderer!! Kill him, guys!!”
“Kill that bloody murderer!!”
Looked like I finally did it. All the guards were NPCs that could now be killed during this event. If they never lay their fingers on Elly, Popo and Mimi, I would never even have thought of touching them like this. What was more to kill them in such a manner. But…
I pulled my hood from the robe that I wore over the top of my armour and then took out my sword and shield. I was not planning to play the support character this time. I had come here to be these bloody people’s worst nightmare. As five of the guards, each level between 60-80 came charging at me, I licked my lips.
Finally, I would have some fun.

To The Far Shore
Post apocalyptic Oregon Trail. The apocalypse has come and gone. And come back again, and left again... nobody really knows how often. Nothing lasts forever, but nothing is ever completely gone. Which is a shame for young Mazelton, as his family has been around a terribly long time, and made an astonishing amount of enemies. Millenia's worth. So he has to run- from mobs, cannibals, soldiers, sailors, cholera, cattle, thieving sales-monks, starvation, mechanical horrors, vengeful spirits, negotiating your own marriage, and poison of every sort. Fortunately, his not terribly nice family has trained him well in the arts of core polishing. Or as you and I might know it- turning radioactive pellets into useful tools. And weapons. Updates Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Usual defensive tags applied. The goal isn't exactly family friendly, but you have probably seen worse on network TV. After the watershed. Not full blown HBO, let's say. This is the first novel I am sharing publicly, so feedback is very much appreciated and encouraged. Act 1 of the novel is completed, but do please let me know what works, what doesn't, and what you would like to see more of. Thank you, and Enjoy!

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
