《Fantasy Online: Hyperborea》Prologue: Troll Battles
Advertisement
At half the length of her body, Tamana’s buster sword is meant to be held with both hands, to be used as both a shield and a weapon, but she’s never been one to do things in a conventional way. She takes to the air, and following a perfect arc, she comes down hard on the enemy troll.
-15 HP!
She botches the landing, still not used to her buster sword’s weight, and cartwheels to the right. The Klin Mountain troll leaps to attack just as an explosion flings him backwards.
-5 HP!
Glancing over her shoulder, Tamana watches Ryuk load another black marble into his magic slingshot. He pulls back; a blast at the troll’s hairy feet produces a cloud of dust and a scattering of debris.
“Both hands on the sword!” Ryuk pops off another black marble at the feet of the troll, causing more dust to obscure the air. Range isn’t an issue with his magic slingshot; it propels the marbles with magic, not elastic and it self-adjusts for range. This is a good thing, as Ryuk is utterly terrible with his new avatar.
Tamana is by his side moments later, the strands of her long white hair beating in the wind. “My attack looked cool though, right?” she asks.
He has to smile at this.
A smaller troll, likely the bigger troll’s wench, flanks the two. Dreadlocks cover her face and yellow man-bone jewelry dangles from her neck. She pauses, grunts, and charges.
Ryuk loses his footing and muffs his next shot. The marble explodes and a nearby bush bursts into flame.
Still holding her weapon incorrectly, Tamana swipes her ironing board of a sword at the she-troll and manages to cut her left arm off at the elbow. The she-troll shrieks as her blood jets into the air.

-39 HP! Critical hit!
The dust clears. Maddened with rage, the beefy male troll charges at the two with his arms over his head.
“I’ve got this!” Ryuk procures a clear marble from the pocket on his belt, pulls back, and looses it.
The clear marble connects and the troll freezes in place.
What the … ?
Ryuk glances back to Tamana, who is also frozen, her awkwardly held sword in the ‘ready enough’ position at her side. Turning to the female troll, he sees that the blood spraying from her arm is now frozen mid-air. Time stands still, from the grass that was moments ago blowing in the wind, to a bead of sweat on the side of Tamana’s face – everything around him is stationary.
Not knowing how long he has until time returns to its normal pace, Ryuk moves to the side of the alpha troll, takes a few steps back just to give himself some distance, reaches for a black marble and …
Time warp speeds ahead and the troll turns to him.
Taken off guard, Ryuk is seconds from being clobbered when the tip of Tamana’s buster sword pierces the creature’s chest, splashing oily black blood onto Ryuk’s face.
Instakill!
The troll slumps forward and Tamana kicks his corpse off her buster sword. She keeps the troll’s blood on the blade as she turns to his smaller counterpart. One clean swipe and she finishes off the she-troll too.
-17 HP!
They are each awarded experience points and the guild coffers increase by about a hundred rupees. With a flick of his wrist, Ryuk checks their stats and swipes them away.

“That was crazy ... ” Tamana wipes the digital sweat from her forehead. She stabs her bloodied sword into the soil, something she’s grown fond of doing since taking her new avatar. Glittery magic spirals around her hands and a halo forms over her crown as she lifts her arms into the air. A cloud forms over the two; iridescent snowflakes gently settle onto their heads.
+45 HP!
“What did you do back there?” She asks, after they’ve healed up. “How did you freeze time? That’s, like, a level 30 spell or something!”
Ryuk shows her one of his clear marbles. “It’s these clear marbles. Like I told you, they’re wild cards.”
“You should have used more of those when we were leveling up earlier.” She shoots him one of her knowing smiles that he’s grown fond of over the years.
He shrugs her off. “I wanted to play it safe. I knew the black marbles were explosive, and they seemed the way to go.” He returns the clear marble to the pocket on his belt. “That was definitely cooler than I thought it would be. Next time, I’ll, um, do something a bit more productive when time freezes.”
“I’m sure you will.” Her smile fades as the thought of real world responsibilities spreads across her face. “I really need to logout now and take care of some homework. I keep pushing it off.”
He kicks a piece of rubble away. “Same here, but not homework – family.”
“You’re meeting your brother today?”
“Yeah, real soon, actually.”
Her eyes fill with concern. “Be careful, Ryuk.”
“You do the same.”
“My homework isn’t that dangerous!” With a laugh, she lifts her hand and the logout button appears. “See you soon.”
Tamana smiles faintly at Ryuk as her avatar dematerializes.

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!

Is it Really Ok for a Dungeon Master to Manage a Dungeon?
Leo Flores just wanted to play D&D with his friends. He didn't expect anything life changing to happen during their odd little campaign, but next thing he knows he's been summoned by those same friends as the Demon King who will lead their dungeon to greatness. This takes being a Dungeon Master to a whole new level doesn't it? A fun romp of a story that takes a few jabs at the common tropes found in isekai LN while also mainting a genuine plot. Some moments and characters are based off my own campaigns I've run before. Trying to upload once a week, but may take up to two weeks to upload.
