《When Plush comes to Shove》Chapter 28 - How rewarding

When I enter the guild Cathy immediately runs up to me.
“You’re back! Come to Hugh’s office, we need to talk immediately!” And proceeds to run up the stairs, however before I follow her I go up to the booth and see Grizz sitting there.
“You’re not planning on taking a quest when the guild master wants to see you, are you?”
No it’s something else, I just wanted to tell whoever's on booth duty that I have three friends from abroad coming over later today to join the guild.
*sigh* “People coming to join the guild means more work... Well thanks for giving me some time to prepare at least.”
Isn’t Cathy the one to take care new recruits and checking their abilities?
“No, that was just due to Rico being the one on booth duty at the time, as great of an office worker as he is, he doesn’t know a thing about battles or combat related skills, he’s the only one of us allowed to push new recruits onto someone else.”
Oh. Well see you later then.
“Yeah.”
Having finished with that I then walk up the stair and enter Hugh’s office.
“Welcome back Plush.”
This time Hugh is actually sitting at his desk and looking as professional as someone can look with a red mark in the shape of a shoe on their face.
‘Cathy doesn’t need magic as long as she has a shoe huh…’ I think wryly
Thanks.
“Now then, could you please tell us what you found in there?”
I start feeling troubles by his request, so I do what most would do.
I actually didn’t get very far, after we entered the cave there was a cave in and I lost the spirit that I was following. However during the cave in I found another species which was living underground close to the spirits, in fact a group of them are actually on their way here to join the guild now, so if you still have any questions please ask them.
I lie through my non-existent teeth and push the work onto someone else.
‘At least this way I don’t have to worry about accidentally revealing too much.’
“Well in that case I’ll have to ask them after they join, I don’t like being bothersome to people not a part of the guild.”
“So you’re fine with being bothersome with anyone who is a part of it then?”

“Of course I am Cathy, and Plush, I really appreciate what you’ve done Plush, depending on how much they know it could expand our knowledge about the spirits, really, thank you. In fact-”
He then opens one of the desk’s drawers and hands me something that was in it.
“-Have this as a reward, it wouldn’t feel right not giving you something after you joined our little expedition. And Cathy, add a miscellaneous quest point to his license would you?”
“Sure thing.”
I look at the thing he gave me and see that it’s a brown wooden bangle.
This is?
“It’s a new type of magic staff that someone created, it’s much easier to carry around than normal staffs, however it can’t be used for any other spell than the one it's attuned to.”
And the one it’s attuned to is?
“Cathy you’re the wizard so you explain.”
“Right, right. The spell attuned to this bangle is a secret for now, just channel energy into it like you did with the jelly to charge it up, once it’s charged it will change color from normal wooden brown to a color representing the spell inside it.”
Okay, I’ll try.
I try channeling energy into it like when I’m trying to change the shape of a solidified object, and after a few seconds the bangle starts to turn less and less brown and more and more purple, eventually stopping at a purple a few shade brighter than myself.
Is this right?
“Yup, now just focus on the bangle as though you were using a skill.”
I’m a bit surprised at how simple her explanations are considering how special she was making magic sound before, but I still try to follow her vague guidance and focus on the bright purple bangle in my hand.
The bangle starts glowing a bit, but as far as I can tell nothing is happening.
“Was it a failure?”
*clap* “Nope! You seem to be using it right now, aren’t you?”
I stare at Cathy a in a bit of surprise until Hugh decides to explain.
“The bangle has a low class telepathy spell, we thought it would good for you to have in case you meet someone who can’t read in the future. Also I don’t like reading.”
*knock* *knock*
“Come in.”
“Hey Hugh, have you seen Ca- There you are! I’ve been ringing the bell for five minutes now!”
“What’s the matter Grizz?” Asks Cathy.

“There’s a new species here to join the guild so I need help.”
‘Didn’t you say anyone could accept new recruits?’
Grizz stares at me for a bit but calms down when he sees the bangle in my hand.
“Yeah but you didn’t tell me they were a new species, those need to be done directly by the paperwork girl.”
“Hey! Don’t just call me the ‘paperwork girl’!”
“Yeah yeah, but come down already.”
Grizz then exits and closes the door and Hugh says:
“Well we were just about done here either way, so get out of my office you two, I’ve important business to attend to.”
“Don’t sleep on the job.”
We both exit the office and go back downstairs where I see some familiar faces.
“Hey guys” I say while playing with the bangle
“Heya Plush.” Answers Charlie.
“Oh, you guys must be the people Plush told us about!”
“He told you about us? What did he say?” Says Charlie with a hint of anxiety in her voice.
‘Calm down Charlie, I only told them that I didn’t know anything and that they should ask you guys instead, you’re the chief's daughter so just weave a story that you guys are comfortable with.’ I make sure not to use the bangle this time to avoid Cathy hearing it.
She then sighs in relief and looks at Cathy.
“Well? Are you the person who was going to inspect us?”
“Yup, just follow me.”
‘I’ll take a quick delivery quest in the meantime, i’ll see you guys soon.’ I say using the bangle and walk towards the booth to get the stool again.
I try to put the bangle on my arm, however…
*thunk*
It keeps falling off due to my arms being too thin.
‘Maybe…’
I step into one of the empty booths through its hatch when nobody's watching me and use Phasing on the bangle to attach it to my neck.
‘As long as I remember to use phasing on this whenever I phase myself this should be fine.’
I then step back out through the hatch while dragging the stool with me and walk towards the quest board.
‘Let’s see… Oh, there’s one where I need to deliver to Rupe’s shop, might as well since I wanted to go there either way.’
I take the quest note and get it verified by Grizz before picking up the package in the storage room and heading off.
Once I get to Rupe’s shop I can see that the place is looking as dusty and unorganized as the last time I was here.
I walk in through the door, a bell ringing when I open it, and walk up the desk that Rupe was sitting at.
Seeing that Rupe is sleeping I take the package out of my storage a decimeter or so above the desk and with a loud *THUD* Rupe wakes up.
“What’s the matter? With how angry you were at being torn away from the shop I wasn’t expecting you to start sleeping on the job.”
Rupe looks at me with surprise, which I really should be used to by now, until I tap at the bangle/necklace and he looks at me with an understanding look.
“Well this shop hardly gets any customers, it’s too far away from where the adventurers hang out and I don’t have anything anyone else would want.”
He grabs the quest note I’m holding out and signs it.
“That kind of gives me an idea, why not take it up with the guild then? The place is understaffed with only four workers so they’d probably hire you if you asked, and maybe you could set up a shop around there?”
*SLAM*
“That’s brilliant!” He shouts as he picks me up and runs outside, he hangs a “closed” sign on the door and locks it, he then runs full throttle towards the guild.
While holding me.
When we get to the guild he finally drops me to catch his breath and I walk up to the booth.
“There’s a person who wants to work for the guild, is it possible to take him up to Hugh?”
“Work at the guild? Wait, you mean actually at the guild and not as an adventurer!?”
“Yup, long as I can set up his shop somewhere around here that is.”
I look above me and see Rupe standing there.
“Well that depends on what kind of shop it is.”
“Well it’s a-”
“Not with me, take it up with the guild master, Plush, you’ve been there before so mind guiding him?”
“That’s fine, but first-”
I hand him the quest note and he hands me five silver.
“Alright Rupe, follow me.” I say as I put the money in my pouch and walk towards the stairs.
