《The Undead Dungeon》Chapter 19 - A Girl's Best Friend

*Helen's POV*
Am I useful?
I've been asking myself this question the past few days. I was tasked with scouting enemies and mapping the forest. But because of my inadequacy, my friend died. I've been thinking about that day, what could I have done any different that could've changed the outcome?
Should I have stayed and fought?
Should I have ordered my death hound not to attack?
I don't know. I still don't know if I did the right thing or not. But I know one thing, that is I am weak. I was the only one that hasn't evolve from the undead trio. Frank's a leader that has been providing mana for my lord. Butch's now a boss monster he protects my lord from harm. I couldn't protect my friend, how am I suppose to protect my lord or be helpful to my lord? I need to get stronger so that I could be of help to my lord.
Evolving is my best bet in becoming stronger. When I was with my death hound, I had this feeling that's hard to describe. It felt like I had wings. The battle felt easier and quicker when I had a partner. Now that feeling is lost. That should be where I start, trying to get that feeling back. But before that, there is somewhere that I had to go.
Here I am again. The place where my death hound and I first fought together. I remembered it like it was yesterday. The stomping of the owl that seemed to shake the ground. It's wings that cut trees like it was butter. And it's roar that struck fear into the enemy's heart. But in the end, we were able to defeat that giant owl.
We always came here after our scouting trip. We sat near the pond and enjoyed the moment. Maybe the reason I liked you so much was that you reminded me of myself. We don't talk much and when we talk people don't understand what we said. I couldn't think of a better place than here to put your headstone. I gathered rocks and then stacked them together to make a small tower. I promise you that I won't let your sacrifice be in vain. I'll be stronger for the both of us. Strong enough to protect my lord and the people I Iove. Rest in peace my friend, may our lord Adam watched over you in your next life.

While I was saying goodbye to my friend something unexpected took place. A monster appeared out of the forest. It came near the pond and proceeded to drink from it. I have never seen this monster. It was a white horse with a black mane and a spiral horn atop its forehead. It was majestic when I saw it I felt that wings like feeling. I know I need to know more about that feeling. I tried to approach it. When I got close to it, it ran away. It was faster than any animals I have ever seen, even a wolf. That was even more amazing since this was a forest. The uneven ground and roots should have slowed it down, but it galloped like it was an open field with nothing in its way.
After the event took place, I went back to the dungeon and told my lord all about that monster. Frank had to translate everything I said. I couldn't even talk to my lord by myself.
"From what you describe that monster seems to be a unicorn."
"A unicorn?"
"It is a mythical monster that is said to have healing properties. The myth said that unicorn blood could increase your lifespan and its horn could cure any diseases."
I want this unicorn to be my partner. I felt like I could reach my evolution if I had it with me. So I told my lord that it might be a guardian and that I would like to capture it. I told my lord about how useless I was. I hope I could restore your trust in me after what had happened with the adventurers and getting my death hound killed.
"Helen, I'm sorry I didn't know you felt that way. It wasn't your fault that your death hound died. He died protecting you, so I think he didn't die with regret protecting your friend is one of the noblest ways to die. As for my trust, you never lost it. It's fine if you want to hunt that unicorn. You should bring Butch and Frank with you to be safe."

"Thank you, my lord."
After hearing those words from my lord, it felt like I lost a huge burden off my back. I would use the best of my abilities to capture this unicorn dead or alive. With Frank and Butch by my side, there's nothing we couldn't do. That's what I thought, but after three days it became frustrating. The unicorn was unlike any guardian we've ever seen. The moment it saw us, it ran away immediately. It also felt like he could sense danger, so whenever we tried to set up a sneak attack, it never worked.
Today it would be different we would finally capture this unicorn dead or alive. We split up and then I appeared in front of the unicorn. When it saw me, it ran in the other direction. Frank was waiting for it with his sword and shield. The unicorn was fast enough to saw Frank and went left. Butch was waiting for it and began throwing at it. It immediately does a U-turn and runs as fast as it could. It thought it had escaped our pursuit when explosions were triggered. That's when I smiled.
When we saw the unicorn again, its hind leg was destroyed, because of the explosion. We ambushed it knowing it would outmaneuver us, so we placed traps that would use its speed against it. Because it lost one of its legs, it can't get up because his legs can't support the weight of his body. We proceed to bring it to the dungeon. We present it to our lord that seems to be happy after seeing our triumphant return.
"Helen, you should have the honor of killing it. It was because of your plan that we were able to capture the unicorn," said Frank.
I nodded.
I used my dagger to pierce his brain trying to give it a fast death. Lights began to fade from the unicorn's eyes. Then it died.
"Looks like I got mana and new monsters. Corrupted Unicorn. Here you go, Helen, you deserve it."
A unicorn appeared in front of me. It was black with blue eyes and a spiraling horn that has the color of ivory.
"I'll name you Bas."

Saga of Fallen Kings, Book I: The Revenant Prince
The Philosopher King once conquered the known world, his power seemingly unlimited and his armies inexhaustible. Since that time his might has slowly unravelled, and his once steadfast empire has begun to crack, splinter and devour itself. In the isolated Southern Realms, where even magic has abandoned them, none of that matters. For years it has been filled with warring kingdoms, where as many kings die to the blade as to old age, and constant battles tear apart the land. When one such kingdom invades its old enemy, the King and his heir, Prince Caden, are killed. Unable to accept the loss of his family Prince Arian is broken, and when the Philosopher King stretches out his hand in aid, Arian takes it without a second thought. When Caden wakes from death, he's different. His eyes and soul have changed, and he finds a world filled with friends who no longer trust he's even human. Suddenly thrust onto the throne and indebted to the Philosopher King, Caden has no choice but to keep going - he must finish what his father started, and try to survive the machinations of the figure who now owns his fealty. Meanwhile something beyond death stirs for him, desiring nothing more than to drag him back into its embrace. Author's Note: This story used to be known as "A King of his Own", but after some consideration I have decided to rebrand it. The first reason is that I was growing increasingly dissatisfied with the title. The second is that I have come increasingly to view this story as a 'saga' containing multiple 'books' rather than one long, continuous publication, and as I did so I realized that as I was quickly getting to a point in the story where I wanted the first 'book' to end. This doesn't mean I'm going back on the things I said below - they're just going to continue in the next book of the Saga of Fallen Kings. :) Also, be aware that I do plan to edit this at some point. Though I take care to squash out any obvious errors when I proof-read, and do simple edits in that process, at some point I'm almost certainly going to do large edits that might significantly change parts of the story. Old author's notes: This started as a completely random writing session. There was no purpose or direction, but as I kept typing an entire world began to form in my mind that I knew I had to write about. My plan is to turn this story into a veritable medieval fantasy epic that spans an entire world, follows multiple character and storylines, and takes place over many years. The story has quite a grounded, almost 'realistic' start, but many more fantastical elements will be introduced, expanded upon and become central to the narrative. I have ideas for this story that make me genuinely excited and I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy writing it, and join me on what will hopefully become a truly massive fantasy epic. If you do enjoy this story please consider following, rating and leaving a review. I'm also happy to answer any questions or comments you have. The Saga of Armageddon: The Call of Crows
Bjorn Stormtamer's world has been turned upside down in more ways than one. His shipmates have left him for dead on an island for quarantining victims of a disease that he now has. His partner in battle despises him, his family thinks he's dead and everyone else thinks it was good riddance. Moreover, the world is under attack by a virulent plague that kills with light and an empire from the east whose intentions are unknown but whose methods are merciless and bloodthirsty. Little does he know that the world itself is nearly on the brink of cosmic collapse. But when a bold, charismatic woman from another nation seeks him out, Bjorn discovers that the plague he has was not a plague at all, but a trial. A trial to determine who is worthy to wield the power of gods in order to give humanity a fighting chance against the winds of fate. This novel was written 2 years ago and isn't exactly my best work. I'm still improving my skills, but I encourage you to enjoy it for what it's worth. ALSO, the whole plague thing was written about before the COVID pandemic. The plague is fake and actually magic in the story, but that has NOTHING to do with real world events. I am under NO CIRCUMSTANCE trying to make ANY kind of statement with it. Please just enjoy the story and stay safe.
