《Just a Rock》Chapter 20: Back to the Roots

It was just a patch of dirt. Keyword “was.” It became something more than a patch of dirt due to the rock’s influence. Not really; it was just the course of nature. However, the rock’s presence still had a hand —or lack of — in the way this spot developed. This spot once held a tree before the tree was uprooted. Its roots were gone, granting space for new things to take root. Mainly weeds, but in a metaphorical way, this is where this story originally took root.

It begs the question, though, of why the tree was uprooted in the first place. Even if the workers from before needed wood, why put in the extra effort to completely uproot the tree? Not that it matters much. It just seemed unnecessary.

As months or years past of utter boredom, changes slowly occurred. So slowly that it felt more like my minds playing tricks on me than actual changes. A road and bridge were built in plain view, increasing traffic and keeping things somewhat bearable. However, rain eroded the soil and the area where the tree’s roots once were created a depression in the earth. This depression suck in the rock slowly, making the road and bridge much harder to see, and like its name, it left me feeling empty inside.

Aside from the weather, weeds would occasionally sprout, flower, and then die out. They were pests, stubbornly taking root everywhere and pushing the rock around. Surely, they were the main cause of the rock sliding into a depression. They were like little hands reaching for the sky while pushing everything else aside, including the rock and each other. Due to their efforts, the rock was hidden away from the world, waiting to be rediscovered. The roots of such minor beings got in the way of the rock’s, but not forever.
