《Just a Rock》Chapter 7: Demon Magic

The protagonist was filled with feelings of helplessness. An evil demon had separated him from all he knew and cared about. Then set about destroying everything it could. The land itself was warped and twisted by the demon’s cruel hands. Homes were destroyed while coastal lands were shifted to become more symmetrical. Mountains fell into the sea, raising giant whirlpools and tidal waves that wrecked the coastlines.

Survivors were separated from their families and loved ones and forced into camps with complete strangers. These camps were built in the shapes of magic circles and were filled with people until bursting. The demon laughed at the misery it had caused and brought out a cauldron filled with the hopes of its victims and a brush lined with the dreams it has crushed. The demon dipped the brush into the cauldron as screams echoed out from the mixture inside.

The demon stood before three castles holding up a banner of lost souls and began painting. As the brush moved across it, the image of the surroundings started to form as everything else seemed to fade. Colors and textures coalesced into the image while the very souls of the people and surroundings seemed to slip away. The people united and called for someone to rescue them.

The protagonist had been left upon a hill overlooking the chaos. He was trapped in an area of dirt that held his legs still due to the demon’s influence. He struggled to move his legs to no avail but found that his upper body could move freely. He twisted his body into an awkward angle, aiming downhill, hoping for gravity to help free him from the demonic dirt.

His efforts bore fruit, as he freed himself from the dirt and began rolling down the hill uncontrollably. Once he neared the demon, his body reoriented itself as he prepared to attack. Right at the perfect moment, as the demon went to make another swath with its brush, he attacked the demon’s foot. The demon’s brushstroke, as a result, went off-track, eliminating the evil magic that was being casted and returning everything to normal.

The demon fiercely resisted this, making more brushstrokes without any results. It even sacrificed a part of its body to maintain the magic for a bit longer. But, it only delayed the inevitable. The demon ran off as the world turned back into the way it was before.
