《Kingdoms Online》Chapter 14: Handil and his workforce

Rick decided to build a small wood shed near the tower before buying any additional units. This shed would be used to store all the new tools he recently bought for his workers. When it was completed he stocked it with all the extra tools and supplies in his inventory and headed down into the cellar of the tower where the [System Gate] was located so he could be present as the first unit spawned there.

I think the first unit I want is a foreman to lead the crew. I need more time to raise my level and skills and can't do that if I am standing over them all day. I still have a decent amount of money so I think I will make another custom unit. Lets me see what I have available to work with here now.

Hmm, I really don't think I need to buy a VIP race and since I am making a male the Valkyrie are blocked and the Forsaken would probably be a slave driver more than a foreman.

If I think about which race would be a good pick for a construction foreman then a Dwarf seems to be the best choice.

This guy will be a construction overseer more than a builder so I think I will add +10 points to Intelligence, +10 points to Charisma, and +10 points to Leaderships.

That looks good, now time to meet Handil.

You have purchased a create a custom unit.

701 gold pieces have been withdrawn from your inventory.

Your unit will spawn at your [System Gate].

Before him in the [System Gate] just like with Angelica a short stocky figure shimmered into existence. After a few moments, the Dwarf opened his eyes and Rick introduced himself and described to Handil how he was building a tower and then a city. Rick told him how he needed more free time and that it would be Handil's job to lead the assigned projects he was handed.

Before they started anything Rick took Handil upstairs and introduced him to Angelica. With the introductions out of the way, they sat down at the long wood table.

Rick cut off a section of heavy cloth and used a sharpened piece of charcoal to sketch out his envisioned city design. Then taking out his cloth dye pens he colored it in to add some detail.

He explained to Handil that in the future this design would become the center of a larger city that will be constructed around it as they grow.

He handed the City design to Handil to view.

When we decide to build around this later I want to remove this outer moat and leave the one along the walls. Then we will layout the surrounding city expansions and enclose it all with another outer wall. That can be put off for now though, I need to put together a workforce next and have you set them to completing this tower for me.

Heading back down to the cellar Rick and Handil started spawning new units. Rick spawned in ten human [Carpenter], ten dwarf [stone mason], ten dwarf [stone cutters], and two human [cooks].

Gathering the new faces around, Rick explained that Handil was to be their boss and would lead any projects assigned to them. He told the carpenters that he wanted them to help build any scaffolding needed and start construction on a wood barracks along the river for them to live in until proper housing was constructed later. He told them that the shed was stocked with nails and screws. He showed them the screwdriver from his inventory and how to use it with the screws.

The stone masons are to continue the construction of the tower and he explained all about the cement and demonstrated how to use it. The stone cutters job would be to make any cuts needed for the tower while cutting 2" inch thick sections off the stone blocks to be used for road construction later.

Rick then demonstrated how to operate the treadmill crane to lift the stone blocks up the stone masons. Rick also pointed out the shed stocked with brand new tools and supplies and told Handil to inform him if they needed anything that he missed. Now that the crew was sent off to their assigned tasks, Rick began got to work as well.

Behind the tower, he took out his shovel and cleared a [20' x 20' foot] area and lined it with stone blocks. He then used his recipes to create eight [8" x 8" inch] posts as well as [2" x 6" inch] beams and planks.

He dug out holes spaced every ten feet around the perimeter of the stone blocks two feet deep and secured the post in the fresh dug holes with cement and gravel. When the cement set he used the nowt anchored post to build a roof over the 20 x 20 stone block platform. Opening up the [Land Management Menu] he then moved the [System Gate] from the cellar to this newly covered stockpile.

Since Rick had the menu open he decided to purchase more stone blocks, wood, and clay to supply the brand new stockpile. With enough supplies for the workers available, he placed some of the wood in his inventory to make numerous posts, beams, and planks from recipes, This was done to save the Carpenters time since they did not have any sawyer units to process the wood into usable lumber yet.

Now with a newly supplied stockpile, Rick started his next project. With a stone, cutting saw from his inventory and a clay container filled with river water he began cutting six sections of [2" inch] thick slices off five stone blocks and received a recipe for a [2" inch] thick stone paver. While cutting the stone he was sure to keep the stone and blade wet, this was done to avoid overheating the blade to where it would break on him.

Rick made use of the new recipe and used the remaining stone blocks in his inventory to make up a large stack of 2" pavers and placed the majority of them on the back corner of the stockpile.

He then strolled back into the tower and brought out the pot of cement and stone pavers he just made to make a stone stove that looked similar to a modern stove. He now needed a way to heat the stove. With his hammer and stone chisel, he made four [1" inch] thick circular stone slabs and engraved them with runes. He chiseled these runes into the outer rim of the slab: bruni megin sifjar gaefr aldrnari (translate to; heat ability affinity mild fire). He spread cement onto the bottom of the runes and set them in place. When the runes were set in place he connected them to a linked circuit with a small switch rune he carved on top of the stove.

With the stove complete, he then needed to construct a refrigerator next with the same method he made the stove. Rick went into the basement and heated a small leftover section of ingot and made three door hinges and received recipes for them. He took the hinges back upstairs to the fridge and used a thin iron punch to tap out the holes in the fridge frame. After taping out the holes he filled them with wood pegs. Measuring the fridge opening he made a wood door to fit it. First, he screwed the hinges into the wood pegged holes taped in the fridge frame and then hung the door on the hinges. Like the fire runes for the stove, he chiseled two runes int the bottom of the fridge.

He chiseled out two circles with the runes: kaldr megin sifjar gaefr svell (translate to; cold ability affinity mild ice). He made a small switch rune on the side of the new fridge and linked it to the ice runes circuit. Rick opened the fridge door and tapped out holes in the interior side walls and filled them with wood pegs again to screw brackets into. He used the brackets to place three spaced apart wood shelves on top of them. The completed stone fridge stood [7' foot x 4' foot x 4 foot] with a hinged wooden door and had a large shelved interior for preserving food. Touching the switch rune the fridge began to grow cold inside.

With his fridge now completed he removed most of the meat and vegetables from his inventory to stock the new fridge up. He called the cooks over to show them how to use the stove and how the fridge preserved the food if they kept the door closed.

Next, to the fridge, he built a wood shelf and put all the extra cookware, utensils, and silver tableware along with extra spices on it. He took out the barrel of cooking oil and placed it off in the corner away from the stove and filled a silver pitcher up from the barrel of milk from his inventory that he acquired from the human city of Silverhall's central plaza traders.

Rick before moving on instructed the cooks to make three meals a day for the workers and also tell him if they wanted, or needed anything.

Rick then left them to familiarize themselves with the new appliances and climbed the steps to the second floor so he could remove the single size beds, night stands, and trunks he found in the ruined temple. He arranged them around the room how he found them with a nightstand next to every bed and a trunk at the end of every bed. After placing them he searched through the trunks for anything of value and left the clothes and personal items alone for the workers to use.

Rick walked down to the river and found the huge stone slabs that he used to make the coin blanks from, and cut one of these large slabs up into six [1' foot] wide x [6" inch] thick x [6' foot] long sections. Removing the hammer and stone chisel he then chipped out a channel [4" inch] deep x [4" inch] wide x [5' foot] long into the fresh cut six lengths of stone. Rick stored the channeled out stone lengths in his inventory to use as steel ingot casts later on.

Now that he had his steel ingot casts he went behind the tower next to the stockpile and cleared an area for his next project. He paved the area with stone blocks like he had for the stockpile and cemented them all together. While the cement dried he took out the bricks he removed from the ruined temple wall when he had first arrived on the island and set them aside.

When the stone block cemented joints dried, he marked out and carved four fire rune circles into the blocks. With the ruined temple bricks he began to stack and cement a [8' foot] tall x [4' foot] wide hollow cylinder with two arms that extended out on each side [2' feet] around the fire runes.

Rick then made four wind runes that he attached to the end of the extended arms and linked them to the fire runes with an exterior rune switch. When he touched the rune switch the four wind runes circulated air inside of the hollow cylinder while the fire runes put out massive amounts of heat from the bottom. He then quickly shut it off after verifying it worked and left the hollow brick cylinder joints to dry while he went down into the cellar work area. He tossed four iron ingots in the forge to heat up and pressed out the 1300 gold blanks from his inventory through the coin press while he waited.

Rick put the freshly stamped coins into his inventory and removed one of the glowing hot ingots from the forge to the anvil. While he held the ingot with the tongs he slowly rotated and hammered it into a [3' foot] long x [1" inch] round iron rod. He placed the cooling iron rod into the forge to reheat it then brought it back to the anvil. Rick hammered the rod around the top of the anvil to shape a protruding square in the center of the rod.

After he completed shaping the iron rod he cut two [4" inch x 4" inch x 3' foot] posts, and cut two [2" inch x 6" inch x 2' foot] beams and screwed them to the bottom of the posts as a support base. With the two posts standing straight up with the help of their support base he then attached a [2" inch x 6" inch x 6' foot] beam horizontally on the front and back of the supported beams. This left a [4" inch] channel that he used to fit a block into that could slide from left to right inside of this channel.

Next, he made round wheel by cutting a [2" inch x 2" foot] slice off a tree trunk and rasping it into a round shape with his wood files. Rick then used his wood file to shave out a [1" inch x 1" inch] groove within the outer rim of the wheel. With the wheel shaped and the outer rim channel completed, he chiseled out a round hole in the center of the wheel to fit the iron rod he bent around the anvil to work as an axle.

Walking back to the forge he once again removed a hot ingot from the forge and split it to make two [1" foot] long rods with the ends shaped like a pointed spear head. One of them had a grooved cylinder near its end that was mounted to the left side of the frame above where he mounted the wheel. He then made an iron rod with a loop on one end and threaded the other. He slipped the loop around the wheel axle to fit into the square protruding part and then attached a [1' foot] long beam to the threaded end with a nut and washer to work as a pedal that when pushed turned the wheel.

Using some of the leather he obtained hunting in the woods he cut a [1" inch] wide leather belt that he sewed then fit into the wheels channel and wrapped it up into the channel on the pointed metal rod. The block he fit into the frame earlier that moves from left to right is where he mounted the second pointed metal rod. With the two pointed rod tips now facing each other, he could adjust the right block to the left or right to hold a cut piece of wood in-between the two. With his project finished he received another recipe for his new foot pedal lathe design.

I finally got a recipe for round metal rods it was a lot of work hammering them out every time this should help me save time.

Now that he had a lathe he moved it near the wall and ran two [6" inch x 5" foot] cuts of wood through it. As he pressed down on the pedal the wheel spun turning the leather belt that connected to the pointed iron spindle. The pointed spindle dug into the wood causing it to spin quickly around with it. As the chunk of wood spun around from working the pedal, he pressed a wood chisel into the wood and moved it from left to right shaving the wood round. When he had finished the two long wood cylinders, Rick connected the two [6" inch x 5" foot] wood rollers together with metal brackets he made. He now had an adjustable sheet metal roller used to curl flat metal into a pipe, or tube shape from feeding it through the center of the wood rollers.

Rick pulled yet another ingot from the forge to make a round half inch thick cap for the top of his brick cylinder outside next to the stockpile. Then made two [1' foot] round bars and a punched a hole through the end of the bars. He fit a iron pin to slide through the punched holes so that the bars would work as a hinge for the cap. With the last glowing ingot in the forge he hammered in on the anvil into a quarter inch flat sheet the ran it through the rollers to make two [3' foot x 3" inch] iron tubes. Rick used some molten iron from the smelt pot to drip along the tube seam and when it hardened he smoothed it down with a metal file. He now had two [3' foot x 3" inch] iron pipes and pipe recipes. On each end of the pipes he made a simple screw valve that sealed off the flow of the pipes when cranked down.

Heading out to the hollow brick cylinder he attached the iron cap to the top of it with the wood peg technique. Then at the bottom, he chiseled out two holes that he fit the pipes into with the screw valves on the ends.

I now have a blast furnace I can say goodbye to iron and hello to steel now!

Rick opened the blast furnace cap and dumped in the rest of his iron then added a layer of coal then a layer of limestone dust. He closed the top lid and started the furnace and let it heat up and work on melting down the iron into molten steel.

I need to head back to town again I want to pick up a few more things and don't have the time to waste making them right now.

Rick walked back into the tower to find Angelica who still sat reading the book he gave her earlier.

"I am going to head to town to pick up a few more things we need still, if you want you can come with me" Rick told Angelica.

"I would like that," she said setting her book aside as she stood up from the table.

Rick opened a gate behind the blacksmith and they stepped through it. Rick went inside and asked his blacksmith teacher for some help locating some things he wanted.

"Hello teacher I sorry to disturbe you, but I am looking to buy a few things that I hope you can point me in the direction of." Rick explained.

The owner looked up and smiled. "You are no problem at all, so what is it that you are searching for today?"

"I need to find a furniture shop that has a good stock of furiture on hand to buy without waiting for it to be made. I also need to find someone who sells leather along with the tools and supplies for leather work. Then lastly I want to purchase gem cutting and engraving tools." Rick explained, hoping he could help him locate these supplies without searching all over town for them.

"Gem cutting and engraving tools? Did you happen to find a gem deposit of some kind?" The owner asked curiously.

"No, I came across a deposit of clear crystal and have just thought up a use for it" Rick said.

"Ah, I see well for the gem tools I can help you out with that. My company actually makes them here for my contracted jewelers." His teacher told him.

The owner got up and took them into the back warehouse. He took down a small wood box off a shelf and opened it up. Inside were small chisels with flat and prong tips, he also saw pointed files thinner than a modern pencil. Next to the all the chisels and files was a minature hammer iron hammer that was used with the chisels. These are perfect now I just need to make a grinding wheel and I will be all set to start my crystal experiment.

The owner smiled shaking his head. "Today is your lucky day then" He told Rick and led him to the other side of his warehouse and pointed out four used pedal grinding wheels showing a little use but the stones were in excellent shape still.

"I just recently replaced these with brand new ones give me a little bit for them and they're yours." He told Rick with a shrug.

"Great then I will buy all four then." Rick replied as he stored them away in his inventory.

Rick paid his teacher for the tools and grind stones thanked him for his help and headed off toward a large furinture store located on the main plaza. Along the way they stoped to grab a quick bite to eat then waded through the sea of people in and around the plaza. The furniture shop was located close to the libarary which made him think about Cynthia and how she was.

I would like to stop in and see her and also visit that restricted room again but it is getting late and I need to log out and get some sleep. He thought.

The furniture store was huge inside they displayed every type of furiture from commoner up to noble quality. He found a well dressed middle aged man instructing a few emplyees on the placement of a large couch in one of the many displays. When the man noticed Rick and Angelica aproach he left the employees to greet them.

Rick explained to him that he had recently hired a lot of employees and was in need of furniture for them.

"That is not a problem sir I have a crew who are constantly making furniture to stock our warehouse" He explained

Rick told him he wanted to buy forty single size beds and a few tables with enough chairs to seat forty to fifty people. The owner was shocked at the number of beds and chairs, but told him it wasn't a problem. Rick paid him and went to into the back storeroom to load all the beds, chairs, and tables into his inventory. The owner told him to keep them in mind for any furniture in the future and headed back to his employees as they waved and headed out into the plaza.

Rick decided to make a detour through the plaza while it was right here to buy more food. He was worried that the selection of food was very limited and knew he would soon have even more workers to feed as well.

He bought a large mix of vegetables, fruits and meats. He still had flour but bought ten more bags to give to the cooks to use. He then found a farmer on the way out selling eggs and baby chicks. He bought a crate filled with dozens of eggs packed in straw.

I should buy these baby chickens I can have a chicken coop made and raise them for eggs for the worker's breakfasts.

Rick bought the box of chicks he had with about thirty of them in it and also twenty big bags of ground corn and oats to feed them. He was nervous about putting the chicks in his inventory so he opened a gate to the tower between a couple buildings and dropped them off turned around and headed back into town once again.

They walked to the far side of the crafting district and found the leather shop. Rick bought a large stack of leather and leather cord along with a few leather working tools used for crafting leather items.

When they jumped back home Rick stocked up the fridge with more supplies and stacked the bags of flour on the shelf for the cooks. He then went outside to ask Handil how they were coming along and was surprised at what they had accomplished. The tower was high enough to add another floor and the carpenters had almost completed a large barracks house next to the river.

Rick seeing this removed all the beds, nightstands, and trunks from the tower and walked over to the barracks. He layed out fifty single beds along the back wall with the nightstands and trunks. Then removed the tables and chairs he just bought for them to relax at the days' end.

I will eventually need to make a kitchen over here so they can eat all at once. I guess for now they will have to eat in shifts up at the tower.

Rick told Handil to have the carpenters make a chicken coop when they finished the on the barracks and left him to continue his work. Down in the cellar he placed an iron ingot in the forge then took out his new gem tools, a couple chunks of quartz and a grinding wheel. He used the flat gem chisel and gem hammer to cut a quartz piece into a diamond shape about 3" inches from point to point. Then taking the cut quartz he sat down and smoothed out the facets with the grinding wheels until it looked clear as glass.

Rick took the quartz over to the workbench and used the gem files and chisels to engrave a small circle with runes on its facet.

He etched the runes: bjartr megin sifjar frammi dagr. (translate to; bright ability affinity produce light). He then polished with a soft cloth and set it down to open his notices.

Runic Crystal Light

This recipe will allow you to instantly create a crystal light if all ingredients and tools exist in your inventory.

That is what I was looking for alright now on to the next stage.

Rick pulled the ingot out of the forge and split it into four pieces. The first section he hammered out into a round quarter inch plate with a couple screw holes. Next he used a recipe to make two iron rods and made the ends flanged. He shaped the flanged bars into a [J] shape and screwed them to the round plate. Once again using the rod recipe he made two solid silver 6" inch long rods. With his hammer and punch he formed out the ends of the two silver rods so that a crystal light would sit on top of it.

Rick screwed the flanged [J] shape rods to the silver rods then used his crystal light recipe to make another one. With two runic crystal lights he used a strong glue he bought from the General Store and glued the crystal lights into the silver rods. All that was left was to link the crystal lights on a circut and connect them to a small switch rune he engraved on the round plate.

Alright, all finished with this now let me check if I got the recipe for it now.

Crystal Candle Wall Sconce

This recipe will allow you to instantly create a crystal candle wall sconce if all ingredients and tools exist in your inventory.

Yes! It worked now to make a few and start hanging them.

Rick went around the tower punching out screw holes and filling them with wood pegs to screw the new light fixtures in the rooms and then hung a couple outside the tower and inside the barracks.

He found Handil to tell him that the baracks had furiture for them and to demonstrate the new light, he was shocked speachless for a minute after seeing the new invention work without fire or casting a spell. Rick left the light with him so he could show the his workers how to turn them on and off. He went back into the tower fed the baby chicks and went upstairs to setup the fancy canopy bed and furniture from under the temple.

"Angelica can you come up here for a moment." He called down the steps.

Angelica closed her book and climbed the staircase. "Yes my Lord?"

He shook his head at the her still calling him lord while replying. "I need to return to my world for a couple hours, it will look like I am sleeping in bed but I will not be able to wake up until I return." Rick tried to explain a log out to her.

"When you get tired don't be afraid to climb into the bed with me and if it gets to dark just touch this circle here on these wall lights like this." He demonstrated on the light next to the bed.

"I will be fine, and I will make sure no one harms or disturbs you while you are gone." She said.

He smiled at her then unequipped his boots and clothes and climbed under the covers. " Good night Angelica see you soon."

"Good night m-my, good night Cedric"

She finally said my name. He thought.

With a big grin, he said aloud. "Disconnect!"
