《Evolution Barricade》Evolution 2, Chapter 7.5

The world of Brodgar is quite different from our world. Its compactness born from its youth and a lack of a true age of exploration, little of its surface has been identified. As far as I'm concerned, the discoveries granted to me through Region in the Codex only are relevant on two accounts.

The Great Plains of Kave, where I reside, and The Barripatch Islands. The latter needs a lot more time to break down, but I unlocked another codex entry while reading the first. So, I might as well start with where this all began: here. You know, where I am now.

The Great Plains of Kave

One might have expected an isekai hero like me to have started somewhere fantastical. But these plains are desolate, filled with ranbi all trying to devour heroic plants like myself or feast on innocents like Nugget. After reading the codex entry, I've found out that there are about four other species native to this place -- of which Nugget is not among -- for a total of five. Assumedly, the grasses that I blend in among and compete with for turf would be one of them... but it might be it's merely trodden grass rather than a soul reincarnated anew. But this is beside the point! The truth is...

The people of this world abandoned the plains almost three-hundred years ago.

The codex entry isn't specific on why they did this. Based on how I've dealt with the ranbi, I can't imagine them being the culprits. Rather, I imagine it must be due to the lack of water; while digging wells might be possible, I've run into only corrupted and dirtied ponds. Without flowing water, only the plants can make use of the water beneath the soil long enough to wait out renewing rains. It's possible that ranbi burrows allow them to find shallow reservoirs and subsist off them... but I'm not entirely comforted to know how absolutely hostile to humans this place is.

Geographically, however, it gets a lot more interesting and gives me more clues. Or, I suppose, alternate theories as to why they abandoned it. The fields of Kave actually have a coastline; it's a sea-resting region that makes up part of a much greater country known as Gardril. Its north, northeast, and eastern borders line a place known as the Sea of Helmuth.

The codex entry for it is rather tame, though; it's merely a stretch similar to a channel but much wider, separating the mainland of Gardril from The Barripatch Islands. Sailors apparently use it to sail between the Northern Ocean and somewhere called the Dividing Ocean. The codex entries for those, however, aren't in yet. Suffice to say, it's a pretty unknown location without any data connected to it.

But the reason I brought the place up in the first place? The fact that the Barripatch Islands are across the sea means that there are more things like me. If Thorn Grass or even Hinderbush are naturally hostile, it'd be pretty damn terrifying. The Thorn Grass feeds on creatures and plants, after all... which means that it might be possible to feed on people. My own power comparison aside, that'd make something like the Hinderbush far more dangerous with its use of magic. If people went up against large colonies of them, it'd make a lot of sense to just abandon the plains; maybe they burn it once or twice every few years to wipe out any invaders. It'd explain why it's nothing but open fields and that those asshole rabbit ranbi are running around like kings!

... but it's also possible that there are things far more terrifying than these two. I mean, Nugget isn't attached to the Barripatch as far as I can tell... but he is part of the Stickman's plans, I think. Why else would he give me the egg? There's too many questions on what can come out of the Barripatch but the overwhelming reality is that the Great Plains are likely barren due to the islands' inhabitants crossing the channel. But if that fire initiative is underway, shouldn't there still have been something to survive for three-hundred years? Back in my original world, we discovered ruins far older even amidst places ravaged in long wars between natives. The complete lack of anything is extremely discomforting.

In the future, I've decided that if my isekai takes a nation construction arc, I definitely want to settle here. To prove that it CAN be settled! Even if it's merely a lowly plant like myself and Nugget, the two of us can show just how wrong they were about Kave.

Except, you know, doing that might uh... lead to worldwide disaster. After all, things that come from the Barripatch Islands have a unique attribute to them.

Natives of the Barripatch Islands are agents of chaotic neutrality; the Stickman's deviants, to usurp the stagnation of the world.

Suffice to say, learning about Kave has taught me that I am now an agent of uncertainty. But maybe I should go over how, exactly, this all came out when I read and followed the ranbi hole inside this stupid Codex feature of mine.
