《A Promise Made Long Ago》Chapter 7

"You should give him a name," Jon suggested as he watched Jay groom the Arabian stallion. He had left for a moment to grab the grooming supplies for her and was teaching her how to properly groom a horse. Jay glanced at Jon and nodded. She had been uncertain if the horse had already been named but hearing this made her happy. She would love to be able to name the beautiful horse. She tried to come up with one on the spot but nothing came to mind that seemed to fit. The earlier events that kept pushing back into her head didn't make it any easier. Deciding to give up for a bit, she let the memory replay in her mind. There is no way that is a normal bonding. I've bonded with a few animals before and it was never like that. What the hell is going on? She was weirded out but hid it well. She told herself that she needed to keep a sharper eye on the activity of this place. Something was up that no one was willing to tell her. Perhaps a bit of snooping around would reveal some answers. Jon sensed that she was planning something. No doubt she would start looking for answers after the bonding experience. He had planned for this. If she could successfully get information without getting caught, it would be another indication of just how special she was. He thought of a certain item that would definitely give her all the answers she wanted. The only problem was that a traitor had stolen it from under Jon's nose. He would make sure to send Jay after the traitor as soon as he found the bastard. He noticed Jay had finished grooming and was gazing at the horse thoughtfully. After a moment, she spoke. "Hades." The horse began moving his head up and down as if agreeing with her. Jon honestly couldn't help but laugh. "It's perfect for his personality," Jon said while laughing. Jay smiled. "Exactly." Jay was laying in bed, deep in thought. The day had been long with lots of touring and history lessons. She should have been tired after traveling around the massive estate but she was still full of energy. Her mind was on the story Kyle never finished telling her and the weird way of bonding she had experienced with Hades. There was something weird going on and she needed to find out what. She looked at the time on her phone. It was finally midnight. After making sure to learn more about the security system through Jon, she discovered that there were cameras set up in places where a thief was more likely to steal from. Areas such as the museum. She debated on whether it was worth the risk of being caught if she were to see if his office had any cameras. Jon's office was the best place for information but after a bit of thought, she deemed it too risky. She was stealthy but there was no escaping cameras. Deciding to check out the library and museum since she had full access to those at any hour, she got up. She put on socks after touching the cold floor and to keep from being heard so easily while walking. She threw her hair up into a simple ponytail before peeking out the door. The hall was silent. There were low lights along the floor to allow the ability to see without having to fully turn the overhead lights on. Seeing nothing passing by them to indicate someone was in the hallway, she stepped out of her dark room. She slowly walked through to the library, a bit disoriented from the darkness. She was glad to finally be in the library once the large wooden door was closed behind her. She had met no one on the way and it made her heart race with fear and anticipation. She turned on the lights and began walking through, examining the massive shelves all around the room. Each shelf was lined with books of varying sizes and colors. Some of the titles she examined were in languages she did not know. Some of the books even had a weird kind of energy when she picked them up. Those she refused to open and promptly returned them to their place on the shelf. Her instincts were screaming at her to not open them. She had the feeling that they would contain knowledge that she didn't want to know about. Her search brought up little results as the night slowly dragged on. Deciding to take a few with her to her room, she grabbed three that seemed like they would have information she needed before leaving, feeling exhausted. Jay returned to her room and set the stack of books on the coffee table that was situated in the center of the large room. She quickly went to the bathroom before going to bed. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she was asleep, the day finally catching up to her. Jay woke up late in the morning. A knock roused her from her sleep. "Yeah?" she called sleepily as she slowly sat up. She yawned as a voice came from the other side of the door. "Jon has someone he would like for you to meet. They're about to leave so please quickly get dressed and come to the foyer." It was Annie. Hearing that, she jumped out of bed. "Alright! Just give me a moment!" She darted into the closet and grabbed some clothes. After quickly getting ready, she headed to the foyer where Jon and a handsome young man were talking. The man had a flopped over mohawk dyed a dark red. He had steely gray eyes and had a clearly well-toned body. His black shirt was tight on him. She couldn't deny he was easy on the eyes. Jon noticed her joining them and smiled. "Ah, Jay, glad you could join us. This is Max Dwight. He'll be your informant once your training starts." Max smiled and held out his hand. "It's nice to finally meet you. Jon has told me a lot about you. I'm certain you'll be a splendid assassin." "Nice to meet you as well," Jay said with a smile as she shook his hand. Again with the compliments of her being a great assassin. She couldn't see what they were talking about. As far as she was concerned, she hadn't really shown anything that would make someone think that way about her. "Max will be gathering information for you starting today. He will be setting up a small base of operations for you when you need somewhere to hide or rest," Jon explained. "He'll reach out to you once everything is completed and you can go check it out at any time." "I look forward to working with you," Jay said. Though she wore a happy smile, she was wary of him. She wasn't exactly one to trust people right away. The more she stood next to Max, the more something felt off about him. Deciding to trust her gut, she put on an act. This man could not be trusted even if Jon said he could be. Max soon excused himself. He had to go catch a flight. Once Max left, Jon looked at her. "So, did you get a weird feeling from him?" he asked. His question threw her off. "Um...yeah, I did. I don't trust him." "Good. Your instincts are strong. I have some people tailing him. I get the feeling he'll be your first target once your training is partially complete." Jon smiled. "That was your first lesson. Seeing if you can determine whether or not someone is trustworthy immediately." That made no sense to Jay. Even if there were times she could determine that, there was no way to truly figure that information out one hundred percent of the time. No one was a mind reader and no one could see a person's past or future. Jon let out a quiet laugh at her perplexed expression. "You'll understand soon enough that it's possible." Is everyone here a super human freak or something? Jay thought as Jon motioned for her to follow him. She was led to the basement where a training facility had been set up on one side. "We'll start with basic fitness training. Can you show me what you can do using the parkour course?" Jon took a seat on a bench against the wall. Jay looked at him as if he were crazy. She had no problems with parkour but she wanted answers rather than to show off her skills. Knowing she wouldn't easily get her answers, she mentally sighed and headed to the course. Being barefoot was nothing to her as she got started with a high wall. She had learned how to parkour through trial and error while growing up. Her skills had carried over into adulthood because she found she still needed to use them to survive. Jon was impressed as she completed the course quickly and easily. She was soon standing in front of him again, a bit of a proud smirk on her face. Jon grinned. "Yes, you'll definitely be a special assassin."
