《300 Moons Till Disconnect (Gamelit)》4.5: Answers

Trix led his team of three up the Fortress of Ruin, his mood sour. Behind him, Adam grumbled while he walked, while Pam kept equipping and unequipping her iron sword, her face set in a grimace. The unprecedented appearance of a new Chosen One had taken them all by surprise.
There wasn’t supposed to be anyone who would come after Haruki, who was supposed to be the last Chosen One to set foot in Briarwood Rebirth. No more victims, that was what the NPCs had promised them ever since the timer began its countdown.
Even if the Chosen Ones never found a way out, even if they had to be trapped here forever after the countdown stopped, there would be no more who would come after them and lose what they had lost. Marge had expected them to keep their word. Trix had had his suspicions, but having them confirmed just made his mood worsen.
They reached the 99th floor of the dungeon, having already scaled the Fortress of Ruin for 12 hours. It wouldn’t normally take this long to reach the top of the tower, but the End of Ruin event meant that all their portals within the dungeon had been reset, and all the enemies were overpowered variants of what they had been in story mode.
Upon setting foot on the floor, the shadows in the room began to rumble. Like boiling water, they bubbled and popped and hissed at the team, the inky depths dark and bottomless. Out of the hissing, bubbling mess emerged raggedy flags and the sheen of armour. Fleets upon fleets of shadowy Ruined Soldiers, hundreds of elite enemies all clustered in the same room together.
Upon each shadowy face was a tarnished silver mask, one that glinted blue green in the dancing firelight of the torches. Like a moth spreading its wings and laying flat on their faces, the symbol of the Decay.

The same mask looming over a smiling child.
Trix scowled at the memory, and pulled out his hammer.
With his team, he mauled through what seemed to be an endless wave of monsters, each hammer strike boring through shadowy figures and tearing them to ribbons. The arms that grabbed at his clothes and his beard were endless, no matter how much he swung and destroyed them, more would come.
But the team never tired. They never could. Not in body, and certainly not in mind, for they had a mission to attend to, and they would see it through to the end.
Trix swung his hammer, and pondered angrily how he had gotten into this situation. Back then, he had just been a volunteer at a charity foundation, granting wishes to kids with terminal illnesses. Now? He was a vice captain of the Chosen Ones’ Alliance, and had been for five long years ever since he had been kidnapped and brought here.
The man behind the silver mask, his eyes filled with nothing but contempt and disgust.
According to Marge, only those who had cleared the final boss would be transported into the game. She saw the event as the gateway that led to this world, and they’d all just happened to stumble into it by accident. Trix thought differently.
There was someone behind it all, and he knew who it was.
He turned to see that the rest of his team had finished dispatching the other guards, and nodded to them. Adam strode up to the double doors at the end of the hall, looking at him for his approval.
The End of Ruin event had protected the little bugger long enough with the 99 floors of obstacles. It let him hide away in his tower like the coward that he was, but that would end now.

Trix would have his answers.
A silvery moth mask shattered, under Trix’s own anguished blows.
Trix nodded, and Adam slammed the doors open.
Inside, the Decay flinched, his movements frozen in whatever he was doing before they’d arrived.
Slowly, he turned around.
“Greetings, Chosen Ones,” he said in that nasty, slippery voice of his, his silver mask as impassive as always. “To what do I owe this…”
“Pleasure…” Trix could hear the disgust in the Decay’s voice as he uttered those words. The same disgust that had had one of them killed. Permanently.
He scoffed.
“You know full well what we come for,” he snarled, and stormed into the room ahead of his companions. “And I intend to get it.”

The Stars Have Eyes
The universe was a vast, empty, dark, and uncaring place. Then life happened, and the universe was changed forever. Only a teeny-tiny bit, but definitely different. Then again, the universe changes a teeny-tiny bit every second of every day. For instance, if someone were to get off the couch and randomly drink a glass of milk? Bam! One less glass of milk in the universe. Changed forever. Well, excluding any time-travel shenanigans, but anyone who puts a big old hole in the time-space continuum just to un-drink a glass of milk should really reevaluate their priorities. Unless, of course, they were attempting to prevent some massive catastrophe vis-a-vis said glass of milk. Such a scenario is by no means impossible, as one should never underestimate the importance of calcium. Another important tip for any life forms out there is to keep things in perspective. Some look at the vastness of creation in relation to themselves and go, ‘Man, this sucks!’ These people really need to narrow their focus. Sure, they will never affect anything happening on the other end of the galaxy, but so what? That’s way the heck over there, where it doesn’t matter. Therefore, in order to maintain a healthy mindset, it is important to narrow one’s perspective to the things and people that affect them, and that they can affect in turn. But what happens if one is an unfathomable cosmic being from beyond the veil of reality? What happens when such an existence is capable of influencing entire swathes of the universe just by its presence? A creature such as Magh'rathlak the Observer? That particular entity is only about average as far as reality-warping creatures from the dawn of time go, so its influence over the fabric of reality is rather limited. And it still struggles to keep things in perspective. That, among other things, is why it decided to narrow its worldview a bit by compressing the maddening vastness of its being into a single corporeal form. Magh'rathlak had never tried such a feat, but that wasn't about to stop it. After all, how hard could being human possibly be?

Cursed Era
Tilvrade is born into a family of country nobility. A baby with vague memories of another world, he begins his life trying to come to grips with the world he is in now, while fitting into his household's lifestyle and maid's loving attentions. Soon, shadows of intrigue, creep out from the capital of the kingdom and disrupt his day to day. Revelations of odd vestiges of a civilisation spark memories of who he was. Cover is a work by a great artist called madimb. You can find the full image here. Read if you enjoy reincarnation plots, medieval fantasy and a slow developing negative protagonist. Don't read if you like fast developments and action. This story is overly detailed and not for everyone (The MC is still not a teenager as of chapter 40, if that gives you a hint of the pacing...)

The Destiny Detour
In a kingdom putting together the pieces after a series of devastating magical wars, trouble is brewing. At least that's what the Seer's vague warning to Princess Lillya claims. That warning sends young Sorceress Rosaliy and enigmatic ruffian Drake from one end of the world to the other searching for answers (and lost magical children). The Destiny Detour is third in the Black Pearl Series, but the events of this story occur 10 years after the first two, and it focuses on different characters in the world. It should be able to stand alone. If you are interested, the beginning of the series is available on Amazon and most e-book places: https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B01AYLLKK8

Of Righteous Evil
To wield the magical Arts. The power to manipulate nature itself. Follow Silas on his journey as he learns what it means to be a Mage. With war brewing on the horizon, Silas' plan to become a hero clashes with the harsh reality of conflict. Torn between contradicting emotions, he will have to reconsider his perceptions of both good and evil. Does the end truly never justify the means? Note from author (13.09.20): Sentences have been shortened, less commata used. Paragraphs have been split up. Meant to be "realistic" fantasy, with no overpowered protagonist or evil sorcerer trying to destroy the world. The focus lies on the characters, their progressions and their inner conflicts, coupled with an intricate magic system. Constructive criticism is highly appreciated! HIATUS Updates: 12.12.20 Chapter 1 & 2 are written together. The backstory of the parents will be integrated into one of the later chapters. 20.12.20 Prologue has been rewritten, fight added. Will now continue writing the chapters until the first arch is finished. 19.01.21 Chapter 15 is written.
