《Crystal Shards Online - A LitRPG Series》Book 5 Chapter 3: Gods

Bruce Peters eased back within his virtual chair. The troubled young man sitting on the couch before him was a caricature for crazy—bald head, wild blue eyes. And the story he just finished telling was certifiably the most fantastic thing Bruce had ever heard.
Cognizant that he was still within the virtual avatar of Dr. Evelyn Munroe’s body, Bruce did his best to keep his movements and expressions to a minimum. Not that he had any idea how a women would react any differently to the guy’s story.
Ancient beings living for millions of years on the edges of blackholes? What the heck?
Bruce had to give him credit for his imagination, though. And to be fair, the crazy was something Bruce had expected. What he didn’t expect was how indecipherable it would make gaining anything worthwhile about the AI’s from him. It seemed Bruce would need to propagate these delusions and read between the lines to get the truth.
“So, Cedric…” Bruce said in Evelyn’s silky voice. “The Great Ones are essentially gods from another planet?”
Cedric’s nostrils flared with a sharp exhale. “Your mind is too small to even comprehend the vastness of their existence. A planet? The Great Ones eat whole galaxies for breakfast and then crap out the next one. I told you I’m not going to play this game with you, doc. This is why I don’t waste my time with unbelievers. All you ask are stupid, ignorant questions!”
“And how did you learn all this?” Bruce asked, desperate to keep the conversation from derailing. “You said one of them spoke to you…in screams. How?”
Cedric’s throat flexed in a swallow. “When I found death, they found me. And they found me worthy. They sent me back with a message.”
“Which is what?”

“To prepare for the feast.”
“And we’re the food?”
“You are,” he emphasized. “I’ll be reborn in the new world.”
“And what do these gods want? Besides eating us?”
Cedric paused as if shocked by the question. Perhaps it was something he’d never considered himself.
“They don’t need a reason to exist,” he said finally. “They simply do. They create these worlds, they can do whatever they want with them. Us included.”
Bruce worked the statement backwards in his mind. These so called gods were the AIs that created the surface worlds, he got that much. He supposed coming into direct contact with a Builder could easily convince someone like Cedric that they were true gods. But that was rudimentary. There were far more important things to learn here—things that affected them in the here and now.
“Can other people communicate with these gods?” Bruce asked. “Who do they pick who they commune with? And how do they do it? Why?”
If Dennis had the same gift as this kid, then there had to be some commonality to it. Else that led back to their first assumption…that Dennis was somehow one of them. Bruce wasn’t sure which outcome he feared the most, but he needed the answer.
“I don’t question their wisdom,” Cedric said. “I’m just the vessel they chose to carry out their will. And I’m humbled and honored to do it.”
“And what is their will? What have you come to do?”
“I told you already!” Cedric shouted. “To prepare for the feast!”
“And how do you prepare for this feast?”
Cedric opened his mouth to speak, but then stopped himself. His expression grew hostile as a scowl spread across his face. “Oh…now I see. You want to stop the feast, don’t you? Filthy unbeliever. You’ll get no more out of me.”

Damn it. I pushed too hard. Too fast. Bruce checked the time. It was only three hours till Cedric’s real appointment with Dr. Munroe. He had to end this now.
“I see I’ve offended you,” he said. “I apologize. Let’s take a break. We’ll talk about something else when we get back.”
“Yeah, I’m sure we will.” Cedric leered at him. “Don’t you worry, doc. When the time comes… you’re going to know all about the feast. And when you do, it’ll be too late for you or anyone else to stop it.”

Giant monsters roam the land Civilization is frozen in a savage age. For the beast slayer Alden, power and survival are one and the same. But the angry ghost trapped inside the blade has other ideas. Buckle up for the brutal LitRPG ride of a lifetime Savage Hunters is an alternate-world neolothic fantasy. Characters grow their powers with explicit stat blocks presented right in the text, including levels, attribute scores, and unlockable skill trees. Experience is accumulated by battling enormous monsters the size of buildings. Political intrigue and romance elements ramp up as the series progresses. I originally wrote this story after playing Monster Hunter with my niece. She was 12 at the time, already an avid reader, and wanted to read my other published books. I'm a licensed psychotherapist specializing in severe trauma so I tend toward darker fiction. I told her my usual books are too brutal for her but I'd write her something special. The result was this series, which has been praised by both teens and adults for its depth and universal appeal. It begins with an emphasis on cultural elements because I consulted with a trained anthropologist to craft this neolithic setting down to exacting social detail. After these opening chapters, it rapidly shifts to an action-packed adventure. The first 3 books are fully written as of November 2020, totalling approximately 69 chapters. The first book has been professionally edited already. The following two books require some editing which I'll do on a chapter-by-chapter basis as releases progress. I welcome reviews and comments. Writing is a passion, and reader engagement makes my labor all the sweeter.

A Forgotten Hero
(author: This is gonna be a long synopsis I apologise. This should be a prolouge but as you will see I have a seperate prolouge, please forgive me. This fiction as a warning beforehand is as basic as it comes, prettymuch following all story conventions of both the mecha and school life genres. I am mostly writing this to figure out my writing style before I begin something truly creative and uique. I dont wanna ruin something I worked hard on by being illiterate. Also illustrations are at a minimum because all I have access to is MS paint.) In the year 2028 humanity (accidentally) created the means to travel great distances through space in a short period of time. This has led humanity down the road of great technological advancement and also led to the spread of humanity across their home system and just begiining first steps upon other solar systems planets. In the year 2033 the human colonies in space broke from the chains of their old countries creating hyper advanced societies disregarding nationality and any other defining factor. Two space societies formed the Solar Empire a monarchic society with its capitol on the moon Titan which controeld the entire human home system aside from Earth which still remained divided into seperate contries. The other was the Extra-solar Leauge. A mysterious society outside of easy contact range with any other humans besides themselves. To help with construction and other work outside of sealed and breatheable atmospheres of their cities and ships the Solar Empire and Extra-Solar Leauge created what became known as Advanced Movement Shells(AMS). These machines are best described as huge exoskeletons or "mechs", and they aided greatly in getting things done by increasing strength, durability, and the amount of tools able to be used. They also aided in quelling rebellions among extremist groups forming in these new societies. Finally in the year 2050 the Solar Empire having divinated their emperor, and now beliving themselves to be their religions chosen people, the Solar Empire declared a holy war of conquest against all the nations of Earth in order to conquer it under the idea that all humanity was required to bend to their divine emperors rule. The first month of the war whent badly for earth as the divided nations fell one by one due to the Empires superior weaponry among other technologies which made their forces nearly invincible. The AMS were used to great effect due to their almost "magical" level of technological advancement. Some nations able to put up some kind of defense created their own versions of these technological terrors. From there the war became a brutal stalemate and suddenly was won by the forces of earth. Why this is still hasn't come to the light of the common man, but one thing is for certain it took a heroic effort from one, or many people to win it for humanity...

Cannon Fodder Cheat System
At first, when he learned that he was forced to go to many different routine worlds and be reborn into all kinds of cannon fodder, he was against it.Because villains usually all only have a moment of satisfaction, the endings of cannon fodder are also frequently quite miserable. But the man who gave him the system told him that this system not only has all types of powerful functions, but he can also break the routine lives of the cannon fodder.
