Chapter 12: Investigation

It was roughly nine in the morning when Tom arrived home in his car. He had made a quick trip to the bank to prepare for a small surprise for Reia later. At the time he left, Reia was still asleep. Tom hopped out of his car and walked towards his home. He entered inside and closed the door as quietly as he could.

Tom turned around to immediately be pounced upon by Reia who kissed him. He wrapped his arms around her and returned the affection. Reia wrapped her tail around the back of his legs. After a moment they pulled away from each other. Tom noticed Reia was still wearing her long t-shirt pajama. She still had a little sleep in her eyes.

"Good morning, sleepy head," he cooed.

Reia yawned showing off her sharp teeth and slender tongue. Tom found her yawn really cute. "Morning, Tom. Where'd you go?"

"I was just running a quick errand at the bank. I was hoping to get back before you wake up."

"Well, you were successful. I just woke up."

"Seems like it," Tom said. "How about you go freshen up while I get breakfast started. I got something new for you to try."

Reia giggled as she walked away. "You spoil me too much."

"Only to make up for all the trouble I put you through," Tom countered jokingly.

"You make it sound like I don't enjoy the trouble," she yelled across the house.

Tom chuckled as he made his way to the kitchen. He opened the fridge and pulled out the eggs and milk. Tom placed the items on the counter next to the stove. Next he got out vanilla extract, cinnamon, bread, maple syrup, a shallow bowl, and a pan.

Tom spent the next twenty minutes mixing his ingredients to cook up half a dozen pieces of French toast. Interestingly enough, he found that his Cook skill improve his instincts in knowing when to add ingredients, how hot to make the stove, how long to heat something, and a variety of other factors to make food taste delicious. It also has added greater temporary buffs or recoveries to the foods he has made. His batch of French toast was no different.

"Identify."

Tom decided to get a little more fancy and added blueberries and sliced strawberries to the side of the French toast.

Notice Cook has reached Intermediate Level 4.

"Something smells really good," Reia moaned as she walked into the kitchen.

"I made some French toast for the both of us." Tom placed the plates on the center island and pulled out a stool for Reia.

"Your world has so much variety when it comes to food," Reia said as she sat down. She took her knife and fork and cut herself a piece of French toast and took a bite. Her eyes almost went into the back of her head as the flavour hit tongue. "So good!"

"I'm glad you like it." Tom took a bite of his French toast and realized that Reia wasn't exaggerating. It was probably the best French toast he has ever had.

Tom pressed on the tablet top and woke the device from sleep mode. He opened up the web browser and opened up a social bookmarking site called Chekkit. The front page was filled with different news links about the monster attacks and about Reia and him.

"What's in the news today?" Reia asked with her mouth half-full with food.

"Us," Tom replied. "As usual."

Tom noticed something unusual on the front page. It was a link that was titled, "Thunder Speaks Out".

"What the-" he muttered as he clicked the link. The link took him to a Chatter page that was created by a user called "@ASoundofThunder". The account was of someone claiming to be Tom. "What the fuck?"

"What?"

"This person is claiming to be me."

Reia nearly coked on her food as she laughed. "Are you serious? Why?"

"I'm trying to find out now."

The Chatter page had many Chats from this impostor with a variety of images of himself in very convincing cosplay of Tom and someone as Reia.

"This is actually really good cosplay."

"Cosplay?"

"Short for costume play. This page is filled with messages from this guy who is really trying to convince people that he's me. Most of his posts are generic hero posts like, 'I fight for the people'. Or 'It is a hero's duty to fight for the innocent.' Yadda, yadda. It's almost comical, but this person is pretty good at setting up his page and posts to make everyone unsure if it's me or not."

Tom scrolled down the page down a dozen Chats before he found the reason why the impostor was pretending to be him.

"A-ha!" Tom exclaimed.

"What did you find?" Reia had finished her French toast.

"The reason why this guy is pretending to be me. He provided a link to his Funder page."

"Funder?"

"It's basically a place where a person can set up a page where others fund you. Usually for doing stuff like creating art. This guy must be using my actions in order to scam people. Let's see what he gets per month from the website." Tom tapped the page link. "And he gets... Fifty thousand dollars a month! What the fuck!"

"Is that a lot?"

"Fifty thousand dollars is more than enough for anyone to live comfortably for a whole year. This guy is pulling that in per month. Next time we go on a mission we need to expose this guy. He cannot be allowed to scam people like this."

"How horrible." Reia shook her head in disapproval. "For you to do so much good only for a con artist to take credit and profit off of it. It's unforgivable."

"For us to do so much good," Tom corrected. "You're a part of this too."

Reia shrugged and smiled.

"There's no horror like an internet scorned," Tom joked. "He'll regret scamming people like this. Okay, okay, closing that tab. I don't need to dwell on that crap."

Back on the Chekkit front page, Tom found a new link that interested him.

"Ancient Marine Reptile Found?"

Tom clicked the link. It took him a news article with an image that made his eye's widen.

"Uh, Reia, is that what I think it is?" Tom asked as he pointed to the image.

Reia leaned forward and saw the image. "Oh... Yeah... That's definitely a-"

"A large pod of Horizon Dwellers."

According to the bestiary a Horizon Dweller was a social creature that hunted fish in a manner similar to whales. The creature was roughly twenty meters in length. It had two flippers on its front end, a long vertically-flat tail and a crocodile shaped head. Its back was covered in small spines and was a bright blue colour with splotches of beige. Its belly was white. Despite its ferocious appearance, it was only hostile if it or its pod was threatened.

"I am such an idiot," Tom muttered while slapping his forehead.

"What are you talking about?" Reia asked.

"I was under the assumption that when we got our missions, that was when anything from your world transferred to my world. I should have realized that wasn't true when you appeared. Continuously, over time, more inhabitants of your world are going to appear in my world. Not just the dangerous aggressive ones, but regular creatures as well. I finally get it. The missions we get are to deal with grave threats to many lives."

Reia patted him on the shoulder. "It's a simple misunderstanding. Now we know exactly what's happening."

Tom chuckled. "It seems like no matter how much I think I know, there's always more to learn."

"Hmm. So what's today's schedule?"

"We are doing a mission," Tom replied. "I finally got enough Intel for us to take our first step towards going after Phoenix."

Tom closed the web browser and opened a folder on the desktop. The folder contained several files. He opened all of them and organized them all into view. Two of the files were images and the third was a map of Colombia.

Tom spent last several days doing a lot of research into Phoenix. By finding legitimate information on the terrorist group, Tom had unlocked a new skill that was simply called "Computer Skill". This skill gave him additional help in procuring Intel on Phoenix.

Computer Skill Type Passive Rank A Level Beginner 5 (27%) The knowledge of computer programs, programming and hacking is at your finger tips. Increasing this skill's level will give you better proficiency at using computers, whether it is to breaking through firewalls or creating program functions. Higher levels will give you the ability to use more advanced computer systems.

Tom pointed at the first image that appeared on the tablet tower. It was of a man in his late forties. "This is Colombia's biggest drug lord. Maybe the biggest in South America. His real name is Diego Gomez. In the criminal world, he is known as 'El Muerto' or the 'Dead One'. His cartel is responsible for the majority of illegal drug export out of Colombia. They also deals in the sex trade and weapons smuggling."

"How is he connected to Phoenix?"

"Weapons smuggling," Tom replied. "The two organizations have a symbiotic relationship. Phoenix provides Diego with women and girls along with money in exchange for fire arms."

"This man sounds like a monster," Reia said in disgust.

"I think we're insulting monsters at this point. This guy is far worse. It's hard for the authorities to go after him due to his money, influence and power. He'll bribe anyone who can interfere with his operations. Those he cannot buy, he has killed. It is generally believed that he ordered the assassination of the last President of Colombia. As far as my research has gone, this guy would definitely have good information on Phoenix."

"How do we find him?"

"Well, I know which department of the country he lives in but not the exact location. He lives inside Meta. Makes sense. It's the center of the country. To find him we need to find underlings to interrogate."

Tom expanded the last image. It showed a tattoo of a skull with a scorpion crawling up on both sides.

"This is the symbol of his organization: Los Segadores. Every member has this tattoo, usually on the underside of their forearm. We find someone with this tattoo, we interrogate them and that's that."

"So where do we find someone with a tattoo like this?"

"We'll need to go to Villavicencio and travel in the low income area. Chances are, we'll come across someone who is associated with Los Segadores. Now this is going to be a dangerous so we'll need to go in a different disguise. We cannot go as our hero personas, and we definitely cannot go as ourselves."

"Right, right."

"However, before we go, we need to have a serious conversation," Tom cautioned.

"About what?"

"Your stance on killing people."

"Alright, each of you are now equipped with the HERC," Wu said. The man wore green overalls and held a tablet in his left hand, letting it rest against his forearm. "Now we are going to ease each of you into the HERC system so we are starting at minimum strength."

The engineer stood in front of the four Marines wearing the exoskeleton framework. The four Marines were sitting on a long flat bench in the middle of a medium size room. The walls, floors and ceilings were all painted white giving the room a sterile feeling.

"Not starting at full power?" Sam asked while examining the HERC suit.

The HERC equipment was a framework that attached to various pieces of hard plates that snapped around the arms, legs and chest. The plates were made from graphene. The material had a greater stopping power than kevlar but at a fraction of the weight. The HERC was painted with a green camouflage pattern.

"If we start at full power, you run the risk of destroying your arms and legs," the man in green explained. "The HERC exosuit works like this. The mechanisms of the suit enhances your movements and strength. Simply put, when you move, it moves harder. We need you to get use to that additional movement." He tapped a few buttons on his tablet. "I'm starting you all at five percent. Please stand."

The four Marines stood up and nearly fell forward from the additional momentum given to them by the suit.

"Whoa," Chris muttered. "That was something."

"At this current power level, gravity will feel like ninety-seven percent of what it used to be. I want you all to walk around the room and back to me."

The four Marines then walked forward in an awkward manner. They struggled to keep their balance as they walked. They realized that the engineer wasn't kidding when he said that the suit moved harder. Their movements felt much smoother and took less effort. The Marines managed to make a lap around the room and returned to Wu.

"Good, good. Now here's where it gets tedious. You need to keep repeating this process until you get faster and faster at moving in the suit."

"Seriously?" David said in disbelief.

"You four waddled around the room like penguins," Wu chided them. "And you are only at five percent power. You need to slowly adjust to the HERC. Once you are able to move at a regular pace, I'll increase the power by another five percent. We will continue this process until you have reached a hundred percent."

"If it means we become super soldiers, I'm all in," Laura said.

"Now that's the spirit," Wu said. "I will be monitoring your movement with my tablet. Once I believe you are ready for a power increase, I'll notify you. Are you all ready."

"Hell yeah, we're ready," Sam said.

"Alright, continue your laps."

Tom and Reia walked down the side walk side-by-side. With their disguise, they looked like any other citizen of the city. Reia had her arms wrapped around Tom's right arm and used him to help keep her balance.

"It's really warm here," Reia said. She had some sweat on her brow which she wiped away with her forearm.

"We're near the equator of my world," Tom stated. "It's usually like this year-round."

Tom was a little anxious as they walked down the side walk. The area was not visually welcoming. The buildings showed evidence of neglect with their paint peeling off the sides. Garbage was everywhere and there was a sour smell in the air. They walked by many people over the course of a couple hours, but none of them seemed to be a member of Los Segadores.

"What makes you think that there would be cartel members here?" Reia asked.

"Well, we're in the same department that El Muerto lives in," Tom replied. "I somewhat assumed that he would have a presence in the largest city in his own department."

"Well it seems like you're right," Reia said as she pointed. "Look!"

Tom looked in the direction she pointed in and saw a man in a white, stained wife-beater, gold chains and jeans. He had many tattoos on his body and arms. Tom noticed the Los Segadores tattoo underneath his right forearm.

"Nice catch," he said. "Come on. We have to keep up with him."

Tom and Reia picked up their pace to follow the man. Using Tom's Nonchalant skill, the two were able to follow the cartel member without being noticed. The cartel member smoked a cigarette as he walked down the side walk. Tom noticed as the cartel member passed by other civilians, the civilians moved away in fear.

"How long are we following him?" Reia asked.

"Until he is alone. We don't want any witnesses... Ah, there we go."

The cartel member ducked into an alleyway. Tom and Reia stacked up around the corner of the alleyway. He peeked around the corner and saw Angel pulling up two boxes.

"What's he doing?" Reia asked.

Tom saw Angel sit down on one of the boxes. He pulled out a small mirror and a razor blade and put both on the other box. Finally, he pulled out a small pill bottle that contained a white powder.

"He's going to get high on cocaine," Tom sighed. "Come on, we have to stop him. We can't interrogate him if he's high."

Reia followed behind Tom with her hands on his shoulders to keep balance. The two were quiet in their steps for Angel to hear them coming. Angel was just making lines on the mirror when Tom kicked the box away.

Angel shook his head in irritation as he watched his drugs fall to the ground. He looked up at Tom and growled, "You have any idea who I am, boy?"

"I know exactly who you are, Angel Ramos," Tom declared. "I have questions and you're going to answer them."

"Only thing I'm going to do is kill you and turn your woman over to El Muerto."

Angel pulled out a Bowie knife from a sheath on his back and held it with the blade facing down. He jumped to his feet and stabbed downwards toward Tom's face.

In a quick motion, Tom grabbed Angel's hand with his left hand. Angel grabbed his right hand with his left to add more strength to his attack. Still Tom held him in place. A look of shock came across Angel's face as Tom effortlessly held him in place.

"Not used to someone else in control, Enforcer?" Tom questioned him.

Tom tightened his grip on Angel's right hand. Multiple loud cracks came from Angel's hand. He screamed as the bones in his hands broke apart. Tom let go of him and Angel fell to the ground while holding his hand. His knife bounced on the ground with a loud clang.

"We're going to have to move this somewhere else," Reia said. "He's pretty loud."

"Good point," Tom said. "And I have just the place in mind."

Tom grabbed Angel's shoulder and said, 'Fast Travel to the Siberian wild.'

The three teleported from the hot climate of Columbia to the freezing wasteland of the Siberian wilds. The temperature was sub-zero and was a shock to the Columbian.

"Wh-What?" he muttered.

"Equip set one," Tom said. His equipment materialize onto his body. As soon as it did, he turned to Reia and said, "Dispel."

The cartel enforcer felt fear surge in his body as he realized who exactly stood in front of him.

"Oh, oh god..."

"It seems like he realizes who we are," Reia stated.

"It seems he does," Tom said.

Angel shook as he was finally feeling the cold of the sub-Arctic air. Tom noticed a small shrub near the man. He lifted his hand and said, "Fireball." Fire launched from his hand and lit the shrub on fire. "That should help things."

Angel ran over to the shrub and held out his hands to feel the heat. He quickly followed up by rubbing his bare arms. Tom walked over beside him at a casual pace.

"Tell me where I can find El Muerto," Tom demanded. "I know he lives in the same department as we found you. I just need his location."

"I-I can't," he stammered out. Despite the fire, he was still shaking from the cold. "He'll kill me if I tell you."

"And I'll leave you here if you don't," Tom countered calmly. "This fire will slowly die and you'll be left alone in the freezing cold and darkness. I wonder. What will kill you faster? Will it be the cold? Or will it be that pack of wolves just beyond the tree-line?" Angel looked towards the tree-line and saw a dozen eyes looking back at him. Tom leaned towards the man. "Tell us now before I decide your fate."

"O-Okay," he whispered. Angel leaned towards Tom's ear and whispered the coordinates into his ears.

Notice Persuasion has reached Beginner Level 10.

Tom nodded hearing the location. "That's perfect. Now you won't freeze to death."

Angel weakly smiled after hearing what Tom said.

"I'll make this quick."

"What?" Angel muttered.

Tom pulled out his sword and separated Angel's head from his body. His body slumped over and stained the surrounding snow red. Tom flicked his blade clearing the blood on it and then sheathed his sword.

"We got the information we needed," Tom said to Reia.

Tom turned to Reia and saw her staring at Angel's dead body.

"Are you okay, Reia?" he asked.

"Y-Yeah," she replied. "It's just my first time seeing a dead... person. It's different than a dead monster or creature."

"I'm sorry to say this but he's not going to be the last person we have to kill. Are you sure you're going to be okay going in this direction?"

Reia was quiet as she gave the question good thought. "Yes. I know this is necessary. Like I said, it's just the first dead person. I'll adjust. Don't worry."

"Alright. If you feel bothered by anything don't be afraid to say anything to me."

Reia placed a hand on his chest and smiled. "Thank you." She looked to Angel's body. "What do we do about the body?"

Tom looked at the corpse and then to the woods. "Leave him to the wolves. I'm sure they'll appreciate the meal."

The two teleported out of the area. The fire that engulfed the shrub was slowly dying down. Howls filled the air as the large wolves emerged from the trees and make their way towards Angel's body.

On Xoth...

Tala and Syl entered the Adventurers' Guild. The building was filled with laughter, singing and loud talking. Every table was filled with patrons who were all in a joyous mood, a complete opposite of what Tala and Syl were feeling. They approached the front desk where a young female elf receptionist stood.

"Talla, Syl, welcome," she said in a cheerful voice. "What brings you two here?"

"We would like to post a request to the Guild," Syl said sadly. "Reia has gone missing."

"Oh no," the receptionist said. "How long?"

"Too long," Tala replied. Her head was lowered and her cat ears pressed into her head.

"Don't worry, I'll create the request form right away," the elf said as she pulled up a request form. She furiously wrote up the request form. "Where was she last seen?"

"She left towards the mountains," Syl answered. "Reia was curious about the storm that was growing over there. She never came back."

The receptionist nodded while listening to Syl and filling out the form work. "Okay. How much are you posting for a reward?"

"Five gold coins," Syl replied. "It's all we can afford."

"I understand," the receptionist said. "I'll post the request right away."

"Syl, Tala, is that you?" a new voice called out.

The two sisters turned to the source of the voice. A dwarven woman stood there. She was chest height to the two sisters. Her raven-black hair was tied into a braided pony-tail. The dwarf's frame was petite but had womanly curves. She was equipped with steel plated armour and warhammer.

"Vivian?" Tala muttered. "Vivian Terrabane."

"The one and only," the confident dwarf said. "I haven't seen you two in ages."

"It's been at least a year since you visited my hunting shop," Syl said.

"Been going from city to city doing quests," Vivian explained. "Though I always felt more at home here. I just returned. What are you two doing in here? I thought the last thing you two would want to do is join the Guild."

"We came here to post a request," Tala said. "Reia went missing."

The confidence that was in Vivian's stance gave away as she became worried.

"I'll take the request," she immediately said. "I'll find Reia."

"The reward is-" the receptionist said before being interrupted by Vivian.

"I don't need the reward. I'm saving a friend."

"Could you take us with you?" Syl asked. "We want to help in any way we can."

"You sure? It could be dangerous."

"Our sister is in trouble," Tala said. Her ears perked up. "We can't rest while she's out there."

"Alright, then. Gather your things and we'll head out at the crack of dawn."

Columbia, Earth...

Tom and Reia hid behind trees as they scoped out El Muerto's residence. It was night time leaving the drug lord's complex as the only source of light. The housing complex he lived in was three separate mansions. A fifteen foot tall concrete wall surrounded the complex.

Dozens of armed mercenaries patrolled outside the wall. They were armed with a variety of machine guns, grenade launchers and rocket launchers. In front of the gate were two armoured APCs with a heavy fifty-caliber machine gun.

"The place has a heavy defence," Reia observed. "We could try a surprise attack on them."

"We could," Tom said. "But I'm not one hundred percent sure we could survive facing off against a small army armed with guns and explosives."

"Then what do we do?"

"We need to survey the complex. Once I have the layout committed to memory, I could come up with an attack plan. Reia how much weight can you carry when you fly?"

Knowing exactly what Tom was getting at she replied, "I can carry you."

Tom lifted his arms and Reia walked behind him and wrapped her arms around his chest. She unfurled her wings and flapped. They launched into the air at a rapid pace that surprised Tom.

"Whoa," Tom muttered.

"You're not afraid of heights are you?" Reia teased.

"N-No..."

Reia tightened her hold on Tom. "Don't worry. I won't let go. I like holding you like this."

They flew up several hundred feet above the complex. Just high enough to be outside of the hearing range of the mercenaries below. Tom took the time to scan the layout of the area. He counted soldiers and memorized the shapes of the buildings on the property.

Notice Tactician has reached Intermediate Level 2.

"Okay, I got it," he said. "Take us back into the forest and we can go home. I'll try working out a plan of attack."
