《Throne of Blood》Chapter 13 - Friends (1)

*Mehr’s POV*
Old man Blake had left just after showing me my room. The room was almost as big as the room Sirius lived in. Speaking of Sirius, this child was following me with a stupid grin on his face. I couldn’t quite imagine he was the same child that stood tall in front of so many people to take my side. The kind of authority he showed then was nowhere to be seen on his face. To be fair, the only thing visible on his face were his teeth because of his comically big grin.
“So you will stay with us from now on?”
Sirius asked, smiling, as he started to open the windows in the room. I could see a beautiful garden outside that held pretty little flowers and plants running across the field. It was a welcome sight after what I had been dealing with for days now. I went up to the window sill, climbed it and sat down to let the cool breeze hit my face.
“At least for now.” I said as I looked at Sirius. Sirius smiled even more after he heard my answer. He hopped down as he waddled like a bird across the room. I saw him tug at a guard and point to a wall. I noticed a small sword, hung on the wall, that would be a perfect fit for a child of our age. The guard handed the sword to Sirius and he waddled back to me happily.
He held the sword up as he gestured to me to take it. I picked up the sword from his hands before unsheathing to take a look at it. This sword, like many others in this palace, was extremely beautiful and well kept. It glowed with a golden light and its hilt was pure black with no excess design on it. All in all, it was a really good sword.
“Why are you giving me this?”

I asked Sirius as he was hopping on the window sill to sit beside me. He balanced himself before taking a breath of relief. Sirius turned to me with a confused expression on his face.
“Don’t you need a friend though?”
“A friend, this sword?”
“Of course. Father says whenever a Frye is born, the heavens chooses a sword for him. That sword becomes his friend and family. That is why we keep the swords of our greatest ancestors, to this very day.”
Father says this, father says that. I didn’t imagine that speaking stone golem would give his child any time at all. I guess, first impressions can be deceiving.
“What about your real friends?”
Sirius’ eyes lit up as soon as he heard the words that came out of my mouth. He hopped down the window sill as he excitedly started speaking.
“Do you want to meet them?! Let’s go!”
Oi, I just asked!
He held my hand as he pulled me down from the window sill. His small hands had strength unbefitting of a child or perhaps, my body was just that weak. He pulled me as he waddled along the corridor towards the stairway.
I followed him begrudgingly. Just as we reached the stairway, a magnificent view welcomed me. I saw a hall whose ceiling was simply too exorbitant. I couldn’t properly see the end of the ceiling without craning my neck all the way backwards. The stairs went down in a spiral towards the hall that was more extravagant than the Royal Palace in my past life. Paintings of similar men met my eyes as soon as we left the last stair. However, much more paintings of the silver haired young man were visible here.
I was quite curious to know about these people, but more so about this young man. While I could imagine those old men being decorated warriors, there were far more paintings of this young man.

“Who’s he?”
I asked Sirius while pointing at the silver haired man. I thought I would get a straightforward answer but what I received was a confused squeal from this human shaped stupid bird. Utter disbelief was dripping from his open mouth as I said, “Did you forget I don’t have any memories?”
Sirius calmed a bit down after listening to me. He still looked a bit shaken as he started speaking.
“Still, how could you not know the Sword God?”
“The Sword God…. Oh. The one whose sword you have.”
“Yes!!” Sirius hopped excitedly as he showed me his other paintings. He pulled me towards a similar painting where the young man, the Sword God, was standing above a fallen dragon.
“Why is he young in all the paintings?”
“Hmm… I don’t know.”
And here I thought you could be useful. I sighed as I turned to look at Sirius who was still gazing at the painting. I also turned to the painting as I asked him a question.
“So, he killed a dragon? That’s amazing.”
Not just amazing, it was an absolutely incredible feat. Even in my old world, there were stories about how, a long time ago, three dragons descended when the sky ripped apart. It took thousands of people to kill a single one. There were so many poems and fairy tales, regarding the war with the three dragons, that I had grown up with.
“Uh, he killed all of the dragons.”
Hmm? All the dragons?
“How many were there exactly?”
“....Hundreds of thousands….”
My neck snapped in the direction of Sirius with the speed of lightning. Unbeknownst to me, my breath had quickened as my eyes had opened wide.
Did he say… fucking.. Hundreds of thousands?
“Yes, that’s why there are no dragons in the mainland anymore.”
“Wait-wait. Are you joking? A human killed ALL the dragons? Are you sure this is not just a story that people made up?”
Sirius looked at me with pleased eyes as he patted my shoulders gently. He smiled a little, in almost a mocking way. I’m sure I saw it wrong though. This stupid bird brain of a child wouldn’t mock me, would he?
“You don’t believe me, huh? I had the same reaction when I learned it. It was so many years ago…”
You’re four year old, you dumb idiot.
Sirius took his hands off my shoulders as he continued with the same crooked smile.
“Don’t worry. You will see the proof of that great battle and find out why Baelor is called the City of Swords very soon.”
Sirius turned around as he started walking out the main door. I hurriedly moved towards him and put my hand on his shoulder to make him stop. I asked him a question in the same ragged breath.
“Wait! What proof?!”
I needed to know the answer. If someone of that caliber actually existed in this world, I would need to change my world view completely. Here I was, thinking that I could fight against grown adults in this world just because I defeated a third rate warrior. And you want me to believe that there was a person who killed hundreds of thousands of dragons?
I kept looking at Sirius as he slowly turned around. There was no more of that crooked and mocking smile on his face. His eyes had turned serious as I saw him taking a deep breath. My hands were getting sweaty as I waited for him to speak.
“I….actually don’t know.”
Huh? Sorry?
“Actually that was what Grandpa Blake said when I asked him to show the proof. I’ve never seen it myself either.”
"..............."
"..............."
I wonder…..
...how much would he bleed if I punched him in the face right now?

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.
