《Faceless: The Monster Within》Chapter 8: Deserted

Fortunately, it seemed that the divine aura of the Waiting Room was not only useful in alleviating the aches and pains from the prior floor. He could feel the mental stress that he had accumulated beginning to whisk away. It was as if he stood basking in a comfortable breeze on a sweltering day, his discomfort flying away with the wind.
Wary of brashly tackling the next challenge blind after the difficulties of the previous floor, Dharen searched the nearby chest and retrieved the information crystal. He selected the now-available third floor option, causing a stream of information to flood his brain.

Dharen groaned. It seemed that the Tower had a wide variety of challenge types. And if he had to bet, they all had one thing in common: they were all terrible. He had a deep suspicion that there would be something unreasonable about this challenge. Maybe the checkpoint would be one hundred miles away, and he would be missing his legs. Dharen chuckled to himself. Now that would be too much. I’d throw in the towel right then and there.
Hyperbole aside, he truly did expect some level of unreasonability despite the simple nature of the objectives. There was a reason that human society separated itself into ranks of distinction depending on how high one was able to climb within the Tower. It measured strength, guile, cunning, and determination - along with a gamut of other traits. It was the ultimate proving grounds, the source of humanity’s potential to surpass savage monsters in power. In such a place, nothing was ever easy.
Throwing his reluctance aside, Dharen approached the door. He placed his hand upon its surface, and a message confirmed that it now lead to the third floor.

Accept Floor 3 Challenge?

Refusal will result in being ejected from the Tower

Though appreciative of the increase in available time to prepare for the upcoming challenge, he knew that waiting would only bode poorly for his sense of resolve. It was best to tackle things quickly, rather than to dither about.
After accepting the challenge, he found himself assaulted by the now-familiar display of shifting colors that accompanied the Tower’s teleportation. The disorienting parade of pigments ceased, and Dharen took a steadying breath.
Warm, dry air replete with a smattering of sand particles entered his lungs. He held one arm high to shade his eyes and took stock of his surroundings. A searingly powerful sun beat down on a desolate wasteland of sand. Sweat began to drip from him in a cascading downpour, watering the desert floor. His every breath was strained, the very air setting flame to his lungs.

From his vantage point atop a particularly sizable ridge of sand, he could see for miles. The desert seemed to stretch on forever, a forlorn landscape of rolling dunes and little else. With a quick sweep of his eyes, he found that he could faintly see a pillar of light rising to the sky in the far distance. The otherworldly pillar of light seemed to crown the desert in ethereal beauty, a stark centerpoint in a barren ocean of dust. With nothing else in sight, he realized that the pillar must be the aforementioned checkpoint.
With a shrug, Dharen took his first step. As a spray of sand swirled from the force of his step, a sudden squall of wind sent the fine matter hurtling towards his exposed skin. It deflected off the Vitality-hardened surface, careening back into the desert air. As if angered, the forceful gale grew ever more powerful, until the sky itself darkened under a mass of billowing sand. He began to feel an ominous foreboding, understanding he was correct in assuming the floor’s challenge would not be as simple as it had appeared. However, he also knew that he could not afford to stop at this juncture, soldiering on.
With each stride taken, the storm seemed to grow stronger and ever-increasingly malevolent. He couldn’t help but feel as if the very environment itself took fault in his persistence. As if he had insulted its pride with his dogged stamina. The wind pushed back brutally against his every movement, causing his muscles to bulge and strain.
Given dangerous velocity, hurtling fragments of sand began to scour the skin from his bones. Streaks of red tore from his arms as they raised protectively in front of his eyes, dripping crimson into the hungry sands below. He nearly staggered under the relentless assault.
Anger flaring, he pushed back, letting out a Warcry. His muscles flooded with renewed vigor. Veins raised prominently on his neck as he labored heavily under the merciless ministrations of the desert storm. His exposed skin continued to be scoured away, and even his trusty leather armor was developing a number of scratches and tears.
The world turned into a nightmare of pain, fatigue, and despair. It was only Dharen’s exceptional survivability and stamina that allowed him to forge ahead. One step turned into two, two into four. The only signs of his passing were quickly whisked away by the ever-present wind.
Under the relentless assault, he was unable to look up any longer. Dharen had to simply trust in his sense of direction to pave the way to the pillar of light. So one step followed the other, on and on. From time to time, he spotted small pockets of calm in his limited field of view. Outcroppings of rock that provided shelter from the savage storm, crags of stone to shield a harried traveler. Ignoring them, he continued on.

Despite his exhaustion, or perhaps because of it, Dharen was unable to even entertain the possibility of stopping to hide from the scouring desert sand. Trapped by the cutting winds and sand, covered in blood and grit, any sense of fear had shifted. It had transformed. His mind had honed into a blade of razor-sharp will with only one goal: Victory. He would not admit defeat. Not to scouring wind, nor to searing sun. Not even to the Tower itself.
He would not falter. He would not be stopped. Hours turned into days turned into eternity. Each step was a moment of petrifying agony, but even so - one step came, and then another. Sweat and blood mixed and mingled, coating his shredded form in a thick layer. One step came, and then another. The desert heat sucked the moisture from his lungs, setting fire to his insides. One step came, and then another. His muscles ripped and tore, protesting against his unceasing efforts. One step came, and then - he found himself back in the Waiting Room.
The unexpected temporal dislocation caused an interruption in his relentless march and, stifled, it ground to a halt. He collapsed.
Roused from his exhausted slumber by the healing ministrations of his Waiting Room’s aura, Dharen shook himself lightly. His eyes opened to a gratifying sight.

Dharen lit up with delight upon seeing that his efforts had awarded him a new Blessing. It seemed that his single-minded slog through the desert had gained him a reward that served to increase his stamina. Though a small bonus now, the strength of Undaunted Will would grow alongside him.
Excitement shaking off the leftover stupor of his death march, Dharen retrieved his soulseed rewards. One at a time, he corralled the power within the crystal to their proper place within his own soulseed of Triumph. As the second soulseed’s power twisted and coiled with a burning radiance, his soulseed answered with scorching power of its own. The two energies collided and warred, more agitated than ever before.
The golden crystal on his wrist gleamed with the radiance of a sun, forcing Dharen to close his eyes in response. The energies reached a furious peak, and then slowly began to settle. Opening his eyes again, he saw that the soulseed had grown ever-so-slightly to take up a larger portion of his wrist’s surface.

Strength and well-being flooded his veins. He found with relief that many of the whispers he had heard were true. The attribute floor was held steady at 1, so he would not have to worry about his Wisdom dropping any further than it already. That was quite a relief, as he could imagine a negative Wisdom value might prevent him from ever regenerating his Spirit. Though he had already become more powerful than he had imagined through sheer attributes alone, it would have been more than disconcerting to be unable to ever use any abilities again after depleting his Spirit.
He had surpassed what the whispers had called the first mountain - the wall that exists between those who have climbed past a Rank threshold and those who have not. He had heard that the beginning of each granted five times the bonuses of the previous rank - the exception being Spirit gain - with the levels thereafter providing significantly more benefit as the levels before. So far, it was proving true.
He flexed his muscles, revelling in the overwhelming power. Grabbing the information crystal, he requested the requisite information for the fourth floor. He grinned in anticipation. This could be fun.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14
