《Foreststorm》Chapter 22 - Puppy

Humans were quite efficient creatures, though they also made lots of useless stuff. All humans had some strange mobile hut made out of either plant fibres or leather called tent. She watched them build their houses with interest, until she remembered her familiar. She searched for the human chief - the caravan master. He wasn't hard to find, loudly direction his tribe where to set up their huts and care for their horses. She waited until his screaming was at a lull before approaching him.
“Oh, hello Ves’ra, can I help you?”
“Yes, I always sleep with my familiar, so it will join us soon. As long as your tribe doesn't kill him.”
“Why would my caravan kill your familiar?”
“The first humans I met killed his parent.”
“Are you trying to find them to take revenge then?”
“No! Why would I - I killed the other one.” Ves'ra answered.
“How did you manage to bond it then?”
“He wasn't born by then, he only knows me.”
“So, your familiar is some kind of rare creature than?”
“I don't know, I only left my tribe a few months ago, but I haven't seen another one of his race since then. He is a wyvern.”
“Wyvern, that's quite the precious familiar. I’ll warn the adventurers.”
“So they won't try to do that, because if they do I’ll have to kill them.”
“Killing a mage’s familiar is a crime punished by death, so feel free. I’ll warn them nonetheless.”
“Thanks.”
She told Arvog to wait for a little before joining her. The human chief did indeed warn the other humans a few moments later. The announcement that she was had a familiar caused a little commotion - she didn't know what the matter was - but Arvog joined her soon after. The human she talked with first - Mata - came to talk to her with some of her friends.

“So that's a wyvern. I have to say I imagined one to be bigger.”
“Why would he be bigger, he is still a child.” Ves’ra wondered.
“How did you find a wyvern egg? That's something very precious.”
“I met a few humans while training my magic. They were searching for something and I helped them.”
“And they gave you a wyvern egg in return?”
“No. But they killed one of his parents and didn't check their nest. I killed the other one a little later and found his egg in the nest.”
“You killed a wyvern by yourself?”
“Yes.”
“How did you do it? That's not something most adventurers can do, or would attempt to to be honest.”
“I burnt a big hole in its wing and it fell from its nest, trying to get at me.”
“You climbed a wyvern’s nest.” The woman sounded very sceptical at that. “It’s fine if you don't want to tell us, but don't lie.”
“I didn't lie!” She cried out. “It couldn't fly in the night, so it was quite easy.”
“You climbed it in the night.” Now she raised her eyebrow.
“Yes. How would I get to the nest otherwise?”
“If you really did that than you are a lot more daring than anyone I know. Where was the nest located?”
“On the tallest tree I ever saw. I was at least a hundred kobolds tall!”
“Kobolds?” She asked, clearly amused.
“Of course, I'm one kobold tall. You don't measure height in humans?” The humans around her broke out in laughter. She really didn't know why that question was so funny, how could one get a better measuring system than one based on one's own body?

“So you are not one human tall?”
“No. I'm a meter and seventy.”
“What's a meter?”
“You would be a meter and thirty, so a meter is about eighty percent of a kobold.”
“That's a really stupid measurement, who thought of something like that?”
“I don't know, but everyone uses it and you should too, for the sake of us stupid humans at least.”
Ves’ra thought about that for a while, deciding that it wasn't worth to discuss over. When in rome do as the romans do … where did that come from? What was a rome? It seemed fitting though, so she skillfully ignored the strange knowledge just as always.
“Sure. Do you want to pet him? He likes to get petted.” The humans looked at her like she said something strange, muttering to themselves. “Yeah sure, pet the huge highly venomous wyvern, why not. IT’S NO PUPPY!” He yelled at her.
“Of course not! Why would you pet a puppy? You eat them!” All humans looked at her like she lost it.
“YOU DON'T EAT PUPPYS! They are cute and adorable and defenseless!”
“All the better, it won't fight back! Though the older an animal is the better it tastes. … I should think about that, just wait for it to grow up, it will taste better and have more meat.”
“That's not what I meant! You don't eat puppies! Don't do that - someone will own them!”
“So it’s ok if I buy one?”
“NO! Yes. Just don't do it please!”
“I don't like wolves anyways. I’ll only eat them if they attack me.”
“I would like to pet him.” A little noise came from behind. Turning around Ves’ra could see a human hatchling, looking at Arvog with both awe and fear.
“Feel free, he already ate today, and you don't look tasty.”
“Of course not! He is a child!” One of the humans cried out. "Would he do it if he were hungry?"
“I don't eat sapiants, and I made sure he doesn't.”
“How would you know if he looks tasty than?”
“I can see through his eyes.”
“Without meditation?”
“Of course! That would be stupid, why would I want to be defenseless when looking through his eyes?”
“It’s not a matter of want. Most people are simply unable to do that.”
“They should practice then, it gets easier with practice.”
“Yeah, that's not how that works.”
“It was for me.”
“You aren't human, perhaps it’s easier for you.”
The human hatchling - child - ignored them and started petting Arvog. She could feel his contentment as he leant into the small hands of the human, letting out small growls of contentment. She shot the other humans a smug look, their hatchlings had more courage than them.
Some of the humans chuckled at her look, while two others wandered off. Mata spoke up a few moments later, asking about something about a watch. once they regulated that they parted ways, she would have to stand up early in the morning and keep the humans safe, all for some mysterious reward called money.

Silent Poetry
(#1 in metaphor)At late nights, I could see those choked words rushing out of my throat-shouting their presence in the ink of the broken pen. They are awake to be in my heart and on this paper. In the soft yellow light of the lamp, I'm weaving them again, breaking the captivity of time. Oh, I'm still writing.
