《Cold Steel Dig》Chapter 6: The First Floor Boss Part 2

Merchant Meeks avoided the boulder trap I’d set up for him and jumped forward, slashing toward me. I dodged down. With a grunt, he followed.
After racing through several blocks he stabbed at me.
Seeing it coming, I rammed left three squares, collecting a boulder of nickel and a ball of energy. My Bow’s durability jumped to 72/72.
After ramming down through several more my energy arrow appeared pulsing with ivory light.
Seeing him coming I turned and released the charged arrow at him. It bathed his block with light. Having seen him take too many of those without a scratch I bolted backward.
“Kill me ten more times like that, miss, and ye just might win.”
I’d already done it ten times this session. Did that mean he had the equivalent of 20 hit points with me doing 1 damage each time?
This was so hard!
I collected another boulder of nickel as I ran from him and passed a mushroom trap I'd memorized the position of.
He followed me directly and passed through the hallucination trap. He yelled in pain and clawed at his skin. Within a tenth second, he blinked out of the trap and appeared above it.
“Clever, Miss!”
I winced but kept moving. I’d almost charged my bow again.
Ahead was a block with several boulders above it that would make the perfect trap. I destroyed the block but had misjudged how close he was.
Want me to save you?
“No,” I said, with too much sulk in my voice.
How did I even die this time?
A wave of crushing pain overwhelmed me as I had apparently gotten caught in the fallout of my own trap.
“Would you care to continue?”
The gray world between life and death appeared before me.
“Please let me rest here for a little while?”
He nodded and sat down, setting his scythe across his legs.
I sat down behind him and leaned against his back.

“You were close this time.”
“I really wanted to use a Life Saving Crystal.”
“It's possible that it could have worked, but they are very tempting for miners. If you use one once you’ll want to keep using them. I’m impressed that you’ve stopped yourself for so long.”
“I'm saving them up for when I battle Nenvari.”
He didn't say anything.
“What? You think it's a bad plan?” I had been saving them, assuming I could use them in the last fight but I didn't remember Matt using any save crystals during his game, but that could have been because he had used his up getting there in the first place.
“That’s not it. It's just that I've never seen him.”
“Huh? But he’s in the mines and you’re the reaper for the mines, right?”
“I am, but he is not. When you enter the area to fight him you are entering his kingdom and I have no jurisdiction there.”
“So, when I die fighting him some other reaper will save me?” I didn't like that idea at all.
“Maybe. But it's more likely that Nenvari will save you himself.”
“Wait, he’s a Reaper?”
“No. He’s a magician, who happened to learn a few things from the Reapers.”
“Do you know anything else about him? Like why he’s kidnapping children in the first place?”
“I don't know much else. Just that those who leave to fight him never come back.”
We sat in silence for a moment. I couldn't get my mind off of the Life Saving Crystals so I willed one to come out of my inventory and onto my hand. It cast a yellow light making it extremely eye-catching within the gray world.
“Whoa!”
“Please put that away. It's too Bright and might bring Others.”
“Wait. There are others here?”
“What do you think this place is?”
“My own private death? I don't know. I didn't really think about it. I've been too busy memorizing the mine layout and working to get Matt free.”

“It is the space in-between life and death, and there are far too many things here. Things that feed off unprotected souls. That more than anything is why Reapers carry a scythe.”
I swallowed and put the crystal away.
“I need more information about Nenvari and about the other bosses.”
“Yes. I've often found that information is better than a weapon or money.”
“What? Really?”
“Money and weapons will not last forever. Information can. And it is often both a weapon and profitable.”
I leaned against him harder. “But how do I get information about him?”
He said nothing.
“I'll find it deeper in the mine, won't I?”
“The mines contain uncountable dangers and treasures. Look for those that matter, not for the ones that sparkle.”
“Vague as always. Is that, like, something you were trained to do?”
“Are you ready to continue?”
“Not yet. I was so close. I think I'll beat him given a few more chances. I just need to watch out for his sword.”
“As you say. However, the beings in the mine may surprise you.”
“What? Does he get faster when he gets down to 25% of his life?”
“I cannot reveal specifics.”
I sighed. Stupid Reaper and his closed mouth.
***
When I reappeared in the room Meeks looked like he’d just thrown up. His hands shook visibly.
“We’ve been at it fer four hours already. Don't ye think yer parents will be worried?”
“If I don't win, I'll never see them again. Start!”
“I don't want te,” he said.
I froze.
“Ye think it does nothin’ to me te see a child die over and over by me own hand? And screamin’ with pain every time? This wasn't what I agreed to.”
He hung his head.
“I'm not a child.”
The gong sounded.
“Ye’ve won, Miss. and frankly ye were ready for the next level twenty minutes ago.”
“No, I haven't won. If I can't defeat you I'll never win against Nenvari.”
“Ye don't have te be ready for him right this second. Ye’ve been gone near a day already, what’s a few weeks or months?”
My mom would definitely ground us but after dying so many times I didn't fear her.
“Well, I haven't killed you. I don't accept your defeat.”
“Miss, I cannot keep goin’. I concede.”
Merchant Meeks disappeared.
I couldn't believe it. It was too easy. Suspiciously easy. “Get back here so I can beat you!”
After a minute, an ethereal wind picked me up and threw me out into my mine. Three chests sat on the floor in front of me and behind them a hole sunk into the ground to the next level.
I stepped forward and someone grabbed my shoulder. I swung around to face an old woman in a brown dress with an apron.
“Miss Knight, I'm the Brownie Mattie. Since ye defeated—”
“I didn't defeat him.”
“—Since ye defeated Merchant Meeks ye must choose yer prize. The right chest has a weapon upgrade in it. The middle ‘un has a pickaxe upgrade. And the left ‘un has a tome of history and a guide to etiquette.”
Weapons and pickaxes were temporary. Knowledge was forever.
“The books.”
She nodded and vanished in a poof of smoke.
These mines were so weird.
I opened the left chest and two books flew into my cargo satchel. Since I couldn't let myself die just to talk to Meeks or review the books, I decided to see what were the horrors I was being protected from in the floor below.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

Binary Progression: Torrented Edition
This was ment to be the self-published 'real' book of Binary Progression; turns out there isn't much of a market for this kind of story... that and it sucked! As such I am writing another (more successful) series but this was just laying about my book folder so I'm posting it here, please forget the fact I said it sucked, pretty please. He discovers an old, abandoned game with an active, albeit very eccentric, community of no more than five-hundred players on a single server maintained by an unknown individual. Unbeknownst to him, the game he found is more than just an ordinary WoW clone and after many adventures with his group, they make the terrifying discovery that after two full volumes this story becomes a god damn isekai. What’s worse, JohnWillStab, the number-one edgelord on the server is somehow ending up in positions of power despite literally being an undead rogue with evil magic tentacles! Will John’s edginess ruin the isekai? Why does the doctor have the highest kill-count in the game? Is 👑 really a valid character you could use for your username? Can the chef perform an exorcism? Why is God asking John for chicken nuggets? Really, he could just spawn them in - in fact, we saw him spawning food in before!
