“Private Emerson?” One of the lab coat guys asked as they entered the room still working on his tablet.
“You guys got this from here?” The nurse asked when Emily nodded. “I have to head back to the ER.”
“Yea. We got it from here. Thanks for bringing her down.” The other lab coat guys said distractedly still working on his tablet.
“I am Doctor Williams and I am here to do the first part of your assessment. Why don't you come this way.” The second lab coat guy said looking up from his tablet. He was a skinny nerdy looking African American man complete with glasses. “Let's get your weight and height recorded before we begin. Just take off your shoes. You can leave your socks on.”
Emily looked down at her yellow socks then back at the healer who was waiting by a scale. She shook her head and got weighted and had her height checked. “Yup still too short.” Emily thought to herself with a small sigh. “The good news is that I am down fifteen pounds from when I started Super School.”
Doctor Williams lead her to a huge machine and had her sit down next to it and stick her whole arm into the machine. “This machine is going to take some blood and tissue samples so you might feel some pressure followed by a slight pinch.” Said the other lab coat guy. He was just as nerdy as the first guy but he was a really pale white guy with receding hairline.
Doctor Williams tapped on a computer and the machine came to life. Emily felt a sharp pinch as a needle was slowly inserted into her arm at the bend of her arm.
“Ouch,” Emily said sitting straighter in her chair trying to not draw her arm back from the machine.
“It will be just a few more seconds.” The Doctor Williams said as the second Lab coat guy walked over to where Doctor Williams sat by the computer.
After a few seconds, the second lab coat guy reached over the hit a key on the computer. “Hey stop that. I got this.” The Doctor Williams said pushing his partner's hand away from the keyboard.
“It's not leveling out. I was just checking to see if there is an error.” The second lab coat guy said to Doctor Williams. He sounded confused.
“Just wait. It will level off.” Doctor Williams said sounding frustrated with his yet unnamed partner. Emily wanted to laugh.
After a few more seconds of both of them staring at the computer, the second lab coat guy hit a key and Emily felt the needle in her arm withdraw.
“Why did you do that.” The Doctor Williams said his finger flying over the keyboard.
“Because there has to be an error somewhere. It was not leveling off.” The lab coat guy responded.
After a few more seconds of typing on the computer Doctor, Williams leaned back and pointed to the screen. “There, no error you need to stop interfering.
“My apology Private, the machine is acting up today. We're going to need to do the blood and tissue draw again.” Doctor Williams said to her ignoring his partner.
The Doctor Williams hit a few keys on the keyboard and then moved the keyboard away from the lab coat guy as he tried to do something with the computer. Emily winched as the needle stuck her again at the same place as before. This time no one said anything for a while. Both the lab coat guys stared at the computer screen intently.

“It's doing it again.” The second lab coat guy said to his partner.
Doctor Williams tapped on the keyboard for a few minutes stopping every few seconds to stare at something on the screen. “There, is that right?” The lab coat guy said pointing to the computer screen pushing the Doctor’s arm away.
“That can't be right.” Doctor Williams said frowning. “That's an increase by a factor of eight. That's not possible.”
“I am sorry Private but our machine is not working right today. We're going to have to do this part of the test later when we get someone here to fix it.” The second lab coat guy said adjusting his glasses. He looked and sounded very smug. Doctor Williams never looked up from his computer.
Emily pulled her arm out of the machine and check the needle marks. To her surprise, the needle marks were only a little red dots and even as she watched they faded away. “Wow, now that is cool.” Emily thought to herself feeling the smooth unblemished skin of her forearm.
The second lab coat led Emily over to a weight set that had a computer built into it. “This is just like your typical squat machine. You put your feet on the rubber plates here and here.” He said pointing to two blue rubber squares. “You place the metal bar on your shoulders at the base of your neck. Do not put the bar on your neck as you can sustain an injury from that.” He said showing her the correct placement of the weight lifting bar on her bar.
The squat machine looked similar to the Emily used in High School except that the machine she used before had metal plates that you put on the end of the weight bar. Here the weight bar ends were inside the machine. Emily took her position under the weight bar. The second lab coat guy who still hadn't introduce himself to her yet. He adjusted her hands to be closer together then pronounced her ready. He had her practice a few times without any weight on the bar.
“Ok just keep going until I tell you to stop.” The second lab coat guy said tapping the screen on the computer. Emily felt the bar release and the weight settle on her back. The first few times the bar felt light to Emily but as time went by it got harder and harder to lift the bar. On the sixth time, she really struggled to lift the bar but she made it.
“Just keep going until I tell you to stop.” The second lab coat guy said not looking at Emily but at the monitor on the side of the squat machine. So Emily started again struggling to lift the bar. When she was able to complete the squat she looked over at him. The second lab coat guy didn’t say anything so she started on the next one. She kept on going lifting and struggling over and over again. Her face turning red as she struggled to stand up.
“Remember to breath in on the way down and out on the way up.” The second lab coat guy said absently to Emily as she lifted the bar yet again.
Emily kept on lifting the bar long after she thought she would have failed. The funny thing Emily noticed was that her legs were not getting tired. “Is that what he’s waiting on. For my legs to get tired?” She thought to herself and she slowly brought the bar to the up position.

Doctor Williams walked over to stand beside The second lab coat guy. They both crossed their arms at the same time. Emily would have snickered but the stupid bar was really heavy now.
“Ok hear me out. Maybe it wasn’t an error.” Doctor Williams said to his partner. The second white lab coat guy looked at Doctor Williams like he was crazy.
“What if she progressive.” Doctor Williams explained.
“Oh, yea. Yea that would make sense. She would have to be one hell of a progressive though.” The second lab coat guy said rubbing his chin. “We need to be sure though.”
“Yes of course. Let's finish with the physical tests to be sure then look for secondary attributes so we don’t overlook anything.” Doctor Williams told his partner.
They finally let Emily out of the squat machine and she shook out her legs. They didn’t hurt nor where they tired. They just felt tight like after an easy cross country race. They walked her over to a machine that looked like a huge twenty foot long treadmill. Emily smiled at it when she recognized it. It was a speedster treadmill.
“Oh, yea.” Emily said in relish. “This is a speedster treadmill right? You guys think I am a speedster?”
“No, we know your not a speedster.” The Doctor Williams said distractedly.
“Oh. Okay. So do you guys know what I am then?” Emily asked them as she climbed on the treadmill. ah, Sir?” She said adding the Sir as an afterthought because she had no idea if these guys were officers or civilians.
“We will let you know when we completed your tests.” Healer William said sounding annoyed. “We are going to start you off at a slow jog and slowly speed the pace up. Your goal is to stay on in the middle of the yellow lines.” He said pointing to the painted yellow lines on the sides of the treadmill that marked off a small area in the middle of the treadmill.
They started the treadmill at a slow walk and slowly increased the speed. Before long Emily was running as fast as she could go. Several times she came close to the edge of the painted yellow line before being able to pull a head. She found herself breathing fast but not getting tired. She felt awesome like she could run forever. It felt strangely like she had a permanent sugar high. Finally, Emily lost to the treadmill and passed the back yellow line. She was sad that it was over.
The lab coat guy slowed the treadmill down to a stop. “Progressive.” He said looking at Doctor Williams.
Doctor Williams spent a few minutes looking at the computer screen before nodding. “Agreed. She’s progressive. Private if you would come this way. We will continue with our tests.”
She followed Doctor Williams out of the gym to a small office. He had her sit down at a computer. “Ok before we start do you have to go to the bathroom or want a small break? Once the test starts you may not get up or pause the test for any reason.”
“No sir I am good.” Emily said looking at the computer screen.
“This is a timed test so please answer all the questions you can before the test turns itself off. If you don’t know an answer please guess to your best ability as there is no skipping questions. Here is some scrap paper and a pencil.” He tapped the computer then said, “Begin.”
The questions were strange and range all over the place. Some questions had a picture and asked what the object did. Some question were so odd she didn’t even understand the words in the question. She did okay on the normal questions like the math and the reading but by the time the computer turned off, she still felt stupid. She knew she failed the test.
After the test, Emily was handed a tray of bland hospital food that she mostly ate because she was hungry. After dinner they had her sit in a room and try to feel her power inside her. It was a complete waste of time. She must have sat in little room doing breathing exercises for an hour for nothing. She couldn’t feel any powers inside her. She then spent fifteen minutes jumping up and down while the lab coat guy pointed a hand held machine at her.
“So what's the verdict sir?” Emily asked Doctor Williams after they told her she was done.
“Your a regenerative healer.” He told her looking down at his computer.
“Oh. Being a healer isn’t so bad.” Emily lied feeling a little depressed. She was hoping for something more exciting. To go through Super school and end up as a healer was not what she was hoping for.
“Oh your not that type of healer. You self healer. You can only heal yourself. Every super has some form of self healing you just have it a bit stronger.” The second lab coat guy said walking up from behind Emily.
“You have above normal human endurance and if you work out you will have high end normal human strength and speed. Well, high end normal for someone your height.”Doctor Williams told her.
Emily stared at the two lab coat guys in shock. “What does that mean.” She asked.
The two lab coat guys looked at each other then Doctor Williams said. “Your mostly human normal with some self healing abilities. We will keep you here for a week to make sure but we’re pretty confident in our diagnosis.”
It was like someone punched Emily in the stomach. She stared at the two men in shock. They said some more stuff but to Emily, it was mostly background noise. They got her someone to take her to the barracks. Not her old barrack but a new single room barracks. She could not remember what the person who showed her to her new room looked like or even if it was a boy or girl. She knew someone had shown her to her new room but that and the entire journey was a blank in her mind. After everything had been through she was mostly human normal.
All her stuff from her old barrack was in her room neatly stacked in the corner when she walked in. She sat down on her new bed in a daze. The words “Mostly human normal” ran around in her mind. Not bothering to make her bed she curled up in her scrubs and her yellow socks falling to sleep soon after.
