《Endless cage (Dropped)》Chapter 19: The monster's infamy

A mammoth squid.

It's a type of monster that regularly attacks Henduria port.

Usually, the adventurer's guild sends several A rank adventurers to deal with them.

The monster itself isn't particularly strong, but it is really hard to kill and can even merge back its body parts after being cut.

Normally, the adventurers use ice magic to cool it down and eventually use a stronger spell to freeze it completely.

After it's frozen, they would break it up into pieces and bring it to the adventurer's guild.

In the guild, they keep all the meat frozen until a buyer comes along.

Then, usually a butcher or some merchant buys it.

This is pretty much a known fact for this city's residents.

Almost an every day occurrence you could say.

Because of that, the residents got used to it and people rarely die when it happens.

The man, who ran into the guild in panic wasn't a local.

It seems he is a peddler, who arrived here the other day.

Seeing a huge monster, he ran into the adventurer's guild to warn everyone.

So...

Yes.

That monster is the exact opposite of a big deal.

And most definitely it isn't the one monster I'm supposed to defeat.

But then, what am I supposed to defeat?

It has been several days since then and nothing appeared.

I really don't know what to do other than wait for the real threat to appear...

Those few passing days, I have been living in an inn inside the city.

One day's lodgings with three meals costs 50 copper coins, so I can survive here for quite some time.

But I really don't have much to do in the meantime...

Initially, I was practicing ice magic with Nathan.

But yesterday, Feldo and his party left the city to deliver their deceased teammate's belonging to his family.

The city they live in is quite far from here, so they won't be back in the following few days.

I decided to go to the adventurer's guild and spend some time there and afterwards stroll the city.

When I arrived, everyone inside started murmuring while stealing glances at me.

"Hey...Isn't that...?

It's her!

It's the sea splitting razor!"

The sea splitting razor.

For some reason, people started calling me that around here.

Apparently it's all because of how I split the sea when I tried to defeat the squid back then.

But why razor?

My name is Reiza...

And it's not just the adventurers.

It seems like I have become pretty well known in the entire city.

Running through the city with phantom presence probably has something to do with that.

Previously, people would look at me with scorn, but that turned into fear.

Even though the fear should have subsided a long time ago...

"Hey, sea splitting razor!"

Some adventurer with bulging muscles comes to me.

He is stopped by some woman, who puts a hand on his shoulder.

But he lightly brushes her hand off and keeps walking.

"I ain't believing a tiny pipsqueak like you is over level 4000!"

He pulls out a sword out of his sheath and swings sideways.

But even though he looks strong on the outside, he is extremely weak.

Without even a sliver of effort, I catch his blade as it's about to hit me.

People like him occasionally appear and attack me.

It's getting quite annoying now.

Especially since I can't really kill them.

[Phantom crush]

His sword shatters in my hand and he stumbles back.

I start staring into his eyes as he falls on his butt and his face pales.

"A-ah..."

It's the same every time...

Only those weak enough to not sense anything from me at first will try to attack me.

People like these don't believe rumors and recklessly try to challenge me.

I really just want to kill them sometimes...

I turn around and try to walk away when I hear him scream behind me.

"Y-you! You broke my sword!"

...

I turn back at him and take a look at his face.

When I do that, he takes a step back, but then takes another step forward and frowns at me.

"That sword cost me a good fifty gold coins!

You were the one who broke it, so pay up!"

...

The hell is he talking about?

Isn't he the one who swung his sword at me?

And fifty gold coins for that piece of trash?

What kind of delusion is that?

"H-hurry up!

Y-you were the one at fault so pay me back!"

...

The quest said I fail if ten or more people die, right?

In other words, if one or two die, it's not a problem.

I start gathering mana in my left hand and aim it at him.

At that moment some people in armor wielding weapons jump in front of him to defend him.

They are all women and they seem to be even weaker than the guy they are protecting.

Counting them, there is about six of them.

...

One or two is fine, but killing seven might be problematic.

Hmm...what now?

"Stop it right now!"

A familiar voice is suddenly heard from behind me.

I turn around and look at the man.

It's the guildmaster.

"G-guildmaster!

This little brat broke my sword and then threatened me with magic!"

"Shut up you idiotic son of a noble!

Do you want this entire city to be annihilated because of your stupidity?!"

The guildmaster seems very angry.

Probably even more than me.

And I wouldn't blow up this city just because of one idiot...

The idiot reacts a little flustered upon hearing guildmaster's words.

But soon anger paints his face instead and he lashes back at the guildmaster.

"W-who do you think you are talking to?!

You are just a guildmaster of a branch in some insignificant city!"

...

I've had enough.

This guy is even more annoying than the god.

[Phantom presence]

I stomp at the floor while releasing pure mana into it.

The floor shakes and everyone in the room fall on the ground with pale faces.

I walk up to the idiot's group and point at him.

"...annoy me again..."

[Fire dart]

I discharge my accumulated mana and shoot at the floor next to him.

It whizzes right by him and makes a hole in the floor.

Then I look right into his eyes.

"...and I kill you..."

...

He seems to have fainted.

That should do it, right?

I release phantom presence and walk up to the guildmaster.

Surprisingly, even he has a slightly pale face and is sweating.

But he was the only one who kept standing.

He seems quite nervous when looking at me.

Let's calm him down for now.

"...I won't destroy the city...because of one idiot."

"T-thank you for your benevolence."

...

I don't dislike the guildmaster.

But sometimes I feel like he is going overboard with the respect toward me.

I should be the one respecting him, right?

From what I've heard, he is really liked among adventurers and generally does a good job with managing the guild branch.

He does some diligent hard work, I just killed a lot of monsters...

Well, whatever...

It's not like I'm annoyed by his respect.

After all that ruckus, the guild needed to be cleaned up.

All the receptionists were affected by phantom presence and could barely move, so he had to do most of the work.

Initially I came here to talk to the guildmaster or look around...but it looks like I can't anymore.

|= A day of strolling through the city later =|

It feels really bad to be wasting time like this...

There is no monster I need to fight and I can't leave the city in case the monster does appear...

And there really isn't much to do in the city itself.

...

This feels so weird.

In the dungeon, I was always fighting or studying combat techniques.

The only downtime I had, was when I was waiting for the purple slime to die.

And even then I fought monsters in caves instead of just waiting idly.

I guess I could practice ice magic, but without Nathan there isn't anyone to tell me what I'm doing right or wrong.

Ugh...

So this is...

Boredom...

|= A night's sleep later =|

After waking up the next day, I cleanse myself of the sweat I accumulated throughout the night and head outside my room.

Then I walk down the stairs and pass by the inn's receptionist.

That man was initially afraid of me as anyone else, but he eventually got used to seeing me.

I guess he must have met some other scary people with this kind of a job.

Err, but why is the receptionist in the guild still so afraid...?

Ah whatever.

I give the receptionist the key to my room and seat myself.

After a few minutes, the server comes to my table and brings me my breakfast.

The server is a young girl and she also used to fear me.

But not really the case anymore...

How did they come to terms with it so much quicker than anyone else?

It's a mystery.

I quickly wolf down the food and proceed to leave the inn.

As soon as I enter the streets, I hear the all familiar murmurs from the people around me.

The first day, almost everyone looked at me with scorn.

But now, all those expressions turned to fear or respect.

It's quite convenient for me as everyone gets out of my way when I walk.

Before long, I arrive at the guild again.

This time, there seem to be a crowd of people surrounding the entrance.

Did something happen?

As I get closer, people start noticing me and soon a path for me to walk through forms.

I walk through it and enter the guild.

It's even more packed than usual.

Walking up to one of the counters, I approach the receptionist there.

"...excuse me..."

As she hears my voice, her entire body quivers as if she got shocked by electricity.

Looking closely, it's the same person, who did the adventurer registration for me.

"Y-yes! Miss Reiza. W-we have been expecting you!"

Hmm?

Expecting me?

Who was?

"P-please follow me up to the guildmaster's office, things will be explained up there."

...?

"...sure"

I follow the woman upstairs.

She walks over to the door leading to the guildmaster's room and lightly knocks three times.

"E-excuse me, miss Reiza has arrived."

"Enter."

The guildmaster answers from behind the door and the woman then opens the door and beckons to me to enter.

I do as she wants and enter.

In there, I see the guildmaster sitting on the sofa and on the opposite sofa, there are three more people.

One of them is a tall woman with blond hair wearing a blue dress.

The second one is a man of about the same height as her, wearing a full suit of armor with the helmet in his hands.

With his helmet off, it reveals his short brown hair and a carefree smile.

The last one of the bunch is an old man with gray hair and a long beard.

He is wearing an orange robe and holds a staff in his hand.

All of them are looking at me.

Like always, they seem to be scared of me, but trying to not show it on their faces.

As the door is closed behind me by the receptionist, the man in the orange robe speaks.

"...so that's the monster..."

Bonus:

What are the other ancient monsters humanity knows?

There aren't many of those.

First, there are the two elves who reached level 1000, but both of them already died of old age.

Then, in the northern side of the world there is the so called 'monster nation'.

But it isn't actually a nation.

It's called that just because a lot of powerful monsters live there and so humans rarely trespass there.

In there, there are a bunch of monsters over the level 1000, but humans only confirmed two.

Species: Bedrock behemoth

Nickname: Walking mountain

Level: 3021

It's an enormous creature rivaling the purple slime titan in size.

It walks on all fours and is generally really slow, it could basically be compared to a mountain.

Its skin is one of the toughest materials in the world and as such not many dare to attack it.

The behemoth only sees humans as insignificant ants and therefore won't go out of its way to stomp them.

Its usual food are some weaker dragons and other 'bugs'.

The main combat potential of this creature lies in its earth and air magic.

Of course, the behemoth is at master level in both of these.

By using air magic, it negates its shortcoming of being slow and can still catch something to eat that way.

Species: Abyssal hydra

Nickname: Serpent from hell

Level: 2304

A jet black nine headed snake, who can use master level dark magic.

Unlike the behemoth, this creature is highly aggressive toward anything that moves.

The humans first discovered it with a certain party of S ranked adventurers.

The only saving grace for them was the fact that the hydra has really long necks and spreads them out across long distances.

Which means the humans only met one of its heads.

They tried to fight it, but soon noticed the other heads converging on them from distance.

When that happened, they ran away as fast as they could.

Out of the seven S ranked adventurers, only two of them lived to tell the tale.

"Hey, you are just letting your imagination run wild with these, aren't you?"

Yes.

Got a problem?

"Sniff, what happened to the timid author who never talked back to me?

They grow up so fast..."

Shut up...
