《Kill 10 Rats》Volume 1: Interlude II

Jasmine smiled as she sat on the small wooden bench near the village well. She fiddled with the tuning knobs on her new instrument and plucked a string experimentally. The note was flat so she tightened the knob slightly and plucked again. This time the mellow note sounded right to her ear and she strummed all sixteen strings letting the chord fill the village square.
She’d spent the first few days in game slaughtering goblins, wolves, and pretty much anything else she could catch. It had started off as a blast but she’d soon leveled to the point where only the bosses that spawned after killing dozens of the things provided any real challenge.
That had lead her to a near-by village to sell the drops she’d collected and re-supply with food as well as purchase some new items. She had seen the lute hanging from the wall on a wood-workers shop and it had instantly caught her eye. The storekeeper had shown her the proper way to hold it and pluck the strings. It was a long way from the electric Fender she owned, but she’d found learning the new instrument an interesting distraction.
Thus she’d spent three days staying in the village, sitting on this bench, and practicing with her lute. Yesterday she’d actually managed to weave some magic into the song. It had been completely on accident and she honestly had no idea what she’d even done but it had given her such an awful migraine she’d logged out. To her surprise she found her head was pounding even in the real world and her nose bled for nearly a quarter hour. Fortunately, the headache had gone after a nights rest and she had felt fine all day.
She had logged back in after work and was back on her bench. She was getting pretty good. Children ran around the square or sat against the buildings and stalls far away from her listening. Their parents wouldn’t let them near. Which she imagined was because she was an orc. They slowly crept closer, hiding or pretending to be playing until their parents caught them and chased them away again.

She spotted her favorite in his usual spot. The boy was hiding in an alley about twenty yards from her. He’d been there since the very first day and had shown up every day after. He couldn’t have been more than eight and his coal-black hair and cute blue eyes had charmed her instantly. She smiled at him as she started to play.
Suddenly, a black-cloaked figure crept up on the boy from behind him. Jasmine watched in horror as a small pale hand covered his mouth and nose. There was a flash of steel and the light faded from his blue eyes as his life’s blood soaked into his homespun shirt.

Jasmine let out a feral roar. The sound scattered the villagers and she raced into the alley. A glimpse of a flapping dark cloak caught her eye as it darted around a corner. Jasmine chased, pounding her feet against the rough dirt of alley. The cultist was agile as a cat, it’s body slight and nimble as it darted around obstacles that Jasmine had to jump over or run through. However, her legs were longer and stronger and she gained on the cultist.
They rounded another corner. This one blocked by a large brewers cart. The figure in front of her never slowed. It ran at one of the walls, took two steps up the wall, and launched itself into a high jump clearing the top of the cart.
Jasmine reacted instantly. She pulled an axe from her belt, took a single hopping step and threw it as hard as her could. The axe tumbled end over end and slammed into the figure’s back at the height of it’s jump. The blow sent the cultist into a spun and it’s face slammed into the roof’s edge. There was a high-pitched cry of pain, and the the figured tumbled sprawling out of sight.

The cultist was still climbing to it’s feet as Jasmine clambered over the cart. She gave it a vicious kick. The blow sent the cultist slamming into the side of a house and they let out a whimper as they fell to the alley floor once more. Jasmine lept onto them, turned the body, and ripped back the hood.
Bright green eyes eyes looked back at her filled with tears. Rich red-hair was pulled back into a braid revealing two lovely pointy ears. The girl couldn’t have been more than eighteen. She would have been beautiful had it not been for the split lip and obviously broken nose. Jasmine shook her roughly.
“What the fuck was that for?” She shouted into the girl’s face. The girl started to sob harder attempting to cover her face with her hands still covered in the boys blood.
“He said…….. I could remember.” The elf blubbered. She was almost intelligible with her sobbing and rapidly swelling lips. Jasmine cocked her head puzzled. Was this girl a tester? That thought made her even more furious. What kind of twisted human could murder a child? That was beyond unforgivable, even in a game.
“I just wanted……. to remember my name…..” The girl sobbed harder, now beyond reason. Jasmine had no idea what the girl was talking about but she was furious. Red started to bleed into her vision as her anger grew. She grabbed the nearest thing she could and stuck the girl with all her orc born fury. Her lute shattered and the girl stilled. Jasmine looked down on the body disgusted as it vanished to black mist.
