《Tabula Rasa》Chapter 41: Not Her Match

“Fuck my life! Fuck! Fuck!” An Abnormal outwardly cursed and inwardly cursed himself for joining his current mission, cursed Fox for giving the mission to him, and cursed the black-clad individual currently killing their way down a hallway.
“What are you doing?!” One of his comrades shouted from the other side of the hall. “Return fire!” He ordered before peeking his head around the corner and letting bullets fly from his rifle.
Suddenly, his body became loose as his head was split open and he fell onto the ground. He was not alone in his situation though as many other bodies of Freedom City Abnormals decorated the floor.
“Fuck my fucking life!” The Abnormal resumed his cursing, blindly firing into the hall, too scared to peek at his target. His gun clicked and he was forced to abandon his rifle and fish through the bodies of his companions in order to find a new one. As he found one, he overturned a corpse, and just as he was about to pry it loose, a pair of boots appeared in front of his face.
His body began trembling as he slowly panned up, finding a figure wearing a ballistic masking staring down at him, pointing a rifle at his face.
“I-I-I,” He stuttered.
Visette stabbed her bayonet into his throat and he could stutter no longer. She stepped over his body while unloading her magazine and tucking it into her vest, before loading a new one and continuing on.
She had cleared the gym, the library, the auditorium, and was headed to the cafeteria as her last stop. On the way, there were waves of Abnormals she had to face, one after another, but they were all dealt with accordingly.
She suddenly stopped, turning toward a corner of the building that held a large set of metal cases emitting an ominous beeping sound.
‘Explosive devices.’ She thought to herself as she approached.
There were certainly enough explosives to level the floor of the building and if used in conjunction with more bombs, the entire academy would crumble. She removed her glove and pinched the wiring between her forefinger and thumb before they began to glow blue. A series of electric crackles put the bomb out of commission, making it nothing more than a dud.

Visette put her glove back on and resumed her course heading for the cafeteria. Her psionic pulse was hard at work and she felt multiple presences just beyond the doors of the lunchroom. At first, she assumed them to be students, but then, after sending another pulse, she found they were arranged in a crossfire formation.
‘Anyone inside is likely to be an enemy.’
She prepared herself to face another fight, pressing her back against the wall and slowly walking toward the doorway.
She urged the door open with her psionic power and it creaked just loud enough to alert the Abnormals inside. They immediately fired without wasting time investigating whatever was outside. Bullets ripped through the double doors, reducing them to nothing but splinters and dust.
“Tossing a grenade!” An Abnormal pulled the pin to a cylindrical explosive device before chucking it over the flipped cafeteria tables that functioned as cover.
As it bounced onto the floor a few times, it landed outside the cafeteria where Visette stood. She took one glance and used her psionic power to lock the lever in place before sending it back, but at a much faster speed.
The grenade hit a table and exploded as soon as her psionic power was released sending shrapnel everywhere.
As confusion and smoke filled the room, Visette rushed in with her psionics in full spin. Under her manipulation, some of the Abnormals began to fire at one another.
“Watch it!”
“Friendly! Friendly!”
“Stop shooting!”
As they called out to their friends, they received no response since they were being shot at by corpses being forced to hold the trigger until the magazines were exhausted. When the smoke began to clear, Visette had already leaped past the overturned tables and straight into the remaining group of Abnormals.
At first, she brandished her bayonet, cutting a few down while pressing forward, but as she saw no students present, she was able to use her psionics more freely as all witnesses would be killed anyway. Like that, Abnormals who had grenades in their possession were stupefied as the pins were pulled, but that surprise could only last for a second before they were flung away into a wall. Their upper bodies were nearly blown apart as multiple explosions reverberated throughout the cafeteria.

She fired a dozen rounds in an entire group before turning to face the last three Abnormals. Just as they were about to shoot at her, their bodies froze completely. The Abnormal in the center was forced to raise his gun and put a round into his two companions that were unable to resist. The last Abnormal had his head twisted 180 degrees with a crisp snapping sound before they all dropped.
She sent out another psionic pulse just as she was about to leave and found there was still one more “active” presence in the room. A wide metal refrigeration that was clearly turned off, had a door slightly ajar, though she didn’t notice it beforehand.
She approached the fridge with her gun raised only to swing the door open with her psionics, discovering a teacher huddled inside.
“Y-You! What the fuck are you?!” He screamed in pure terror, showing much more fear toward Visette rather than the Abnormals.
“You witnessed the fight that occurred?” Visette inquired emotionlessly.
“Get away you fucking monster!” The teacher yelled.
Visette raised her rifle and sent a round into his head before he could continue on. It was unfortunate for him, but since he happened to see her psionic abilities he was automatically designated as a target in her eyes. One life was surely not worth the risk of exposing the one thing that would almost absolutely guarantee her safety in the new world she found herself in.
After checking for any other witnesses and finding none, she left with peace of mind so to speak. She decided to be more thorough in her detection in order to reduce the amount of risk when using her psionics.
…
In an office far away from Visette’s current position, Jonah Locke, the son of Councilor William Locke, paced back and forth in a panic. He didn’t know the situation outside and if his father became exposed, he’d be a liability to the Abnormals rather than an ally. He could only take solace in the fact that the news of his father’s arrest didn’t come.
“So, what the hell do we do with him again, kid?” An Abnormal asked, pointing to a red-haired young man who was strapped to a chair and gagged with tape.
“He’s Arthur Scott, a friend of Charlie Wakefield’s. We can use him as a bargaining chip at the very least.”
“I don’t know if you heard, but Charlie Wakefield and Visette Thales probably escaped without him and now we got some unknown person killing our guys as we speak. So I can’t see the reason in keeping one guy around.”
At those words, Arthur’s gaze darkened as he seemed to lose hope.
“It was only a suggestion,” Jonah replied.
The Abnormals around the office all shared a look with each other due to Jonah’s unrestrained tone.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude, I’m just a little nervous.” Jonah quickly spoke before the mood turned.
“...Well, I guess you have a point. In any case, that idea you had earlier was pretty good. Putting those students near the explosives should be enough to stop them from going any further.”
The Abnormals all voiced their agreement with a few laughs to get rid of their nervousness. There was never a time where they would’ve thought the situation would be reversed so badly.
“That’s too bad though, it would’ve been nice to use you as bait.” One of the Abnormals lightly smacked Arthur’s face eliciting an angry glare from the boy.
“You keep looking at me like that and my hits are gonna get a lot harder.”
Arthur was forced to look away due to the threat which caused the Abnormal to laugh.
“Yeah, that’s better.”
Just like that, the Abnormals attempted to form a counter strategy that was doomed to fail due to the nature of the opponent they faced.
