《Hero's Song - A Novel in Verse》Chapter 63 - The Broken
Advertisement
And so the prince’s best and brightest travelled out at dawn
to see if anything so sinister was going on
although their force was weakened by the absence of those knights
the prince still had a good end to the battle in his sights
The hero and his men, along with many thousands more
pushed their stubborn foes north, though much slower than before
the humans sang of how the demons would soon disappear
so no more would the humans of the empire live in fear
The hero started feeling like his curse was healing now
every day at war his body felt lighter somehow
but still his magic failed him, all he had now was his blade
to occupy his time upon the battlefields he’d made
As always was the case in war, before a victory
there often came long periods of great monotony
waking up and marching on to chase the demons back
gaining bloody ground with every bloody day’s attack
But humans kept their spirits up when battlefields were stale
a party followed every single triumph without fail
but at the end of every day when camps were full of song
the hero drank alone til one more battle came along
And when the prince did worry for the state of his old friend
with the morning’s battle, all his worries soon would end
for none could match the smile upon the fighting hero’s face
as if it were his pleasure to defend the human race
In the midst of battle he would show off when he could
and taught his new friends of the rules of war he understood
“keep your wits about you til your foes are out of sight
and always keep your comrades to your left and to your right”
The soldiers rarely questioned anything the hero said

while those who didn’t follow his advice soon wound up dead
and though the way he fought was often contradictory
many felt his deeds might just go down in history
“So wise a veteran of war shall lead us all one day
the prince himself has lent an ear to what he has to say”
rumours held that such a skilful soldier would soon rise
to see him knighted one day soon would come as no surprise
People just assumed the prince would soon promote the man
maybe they were meeting to discuss a battle plan
but in the end they couldn’t know for sure why late at night
the prince would sometimes sit with him beside a dying light
A fire was always burning by the hero’s lonely tent
the hero drank the old wine he was starting to resent
but neither kept him very warm as autumn winds set in
and it would be too long before the next day could begin
“My old friend, you fought as well as any man today
I wondered if you might have anything you’d like to say”
the prince approached the hero who just stared into the fire
“no, but I’m sure you’ll be talking to your heart’s desire”
To the hero’s cold remark the prince could only sigh
he knew he couldn’t cheer him up, but never ceased to try
“you may be an awful friend but you’re a friend of mine
if it helped you talk, I could acquire some better wine”
“Tell me what you need your highness, or leave me alone”
the prince was quite relieved to hear his friend’s sarcastic tone
“you’ve done enough for us, I’m only here to speak of life
I’m sorry though, I’ve yet to dig up news about your wife
But does it not excite you that peace might soon come again

you should be off celebrating, singing with your men
I can understand if songs of heroes strike a nerve
but you should go accept the praise they all know you deserve”
The prince had meant the words he said but still the hero stared
the hero heard him but gave his old friend no sign he cared
he only shook his head and drank his wine without a word
the prince continued on, not knowing if his voice was heard
“Listen to me, you can take some pride in what you’ve done
you’ve made your share of mistakes, the same as anyone
see this to the end with me, and soon we’ll get some rest
didn’t you say killing demons is what you do best
You push your limits daily still, despite your current state
won’t the burden of each battle one day be too great”
he wanted to know how the hero still fought with such fire
weakened though he was, it seemed that he would never tire
“Are you still confused about the demons or the war
none of that should even matter to you anymore
fight them like we always have, and don’t lose any sleep
the guilt for taking lives at war is not just yours to keep”
The hero tossed his empty bottle at the burning coals
“your highness, I’ve killed countless foes with countless aims and goals
the only thing I need right now is something else to kill
order me to carry on as normal, and I will”
The prince gave up and nodded as he turned away to leave
“just fight for whatever cause in which you still believe”
left alone at last, the hero tried and failed to stand
then looking at the campfire, he extended his right hand
Through his fingertips he saw the fire he held so dear
the fire that only recently had filled the world with fear
but still his hands were colder than the bitter autumn air
nothing burning near him but a campfire here and there
And so he drifted off, too tired to shiver in the cold
longing for the warmth of all the stories he had told
but as he fell asleep, hoping his wife and sons were fine
his dreams were of an epic battle of his own design

Path of Boundless Adventure
When Mana flooded back to Earth after billions of years, most felt lost in the new world. Some managed to adapt. For Michael, he felt like he'd finally found his path. Follow him as he fights monsters, explores new lands and most of all, seeks adventure. This is my first novel, never written anything before, so please be kind and patient with me, I'm doing my best. A more light-hearted post-apocalyptic novel with large amounts of game elements. MC has a unique advantage but is not massively overpowered and there's more of a focus on exploring and discovering new things rather than defeating a series of arch-nemesis' or building an empire. Winner of the Royal Road Writathon April 2022

He was the son of a Major Genral and became a Special Lieutenant at the age of 17 and saved his school from terrorists, only to die due to a bullet wound. When he awoke. Yes. Awoke. He was in a completely white space and saw a white haired girl looking at him. "Hello, Zack. I'm an Overseer named Alia. And welcome to my realm" Given a choice to die as is or be sent into another world, what will he do? Watch over Zack as he tries to survive and enjoy a world of swords and magic full of action, mystery and adventure by battling demons, humans and even Gods. Constructive Criticism is accepted. I wish to improve my writing, and this story would be the first novel i've ever written... Updates will be posted very erratically. If you will rate this story less than 3 stars, please do leave a review so I will know what the problem was in the story. Cover art is not mine and I found it here. If the artist wants it taken down, I shall comply. Hiatus until summer kicks in. It's a bit of a mess right now. Also, please check out my other fiction, Alice in Magicland. AIML will be active since it's much easier to write than this novel.

Feng He finds his world spiraling out of control, and somehow ends up in his favorite novel? And to make things worse, the character he takes over dies! What can he do? The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
