《Old Cultivation Record》Chapter 21 - Something Between Men

3 months later…
Daryl and Taylor looked at the money on the ground.
“$20,000. Not bad.” Daryl says. “What should we do with it?” He asks.
“Let me buy a car. I feel like a bitch without a vehicle.” Taylor says.
“Fuck that. Why don't I buy a car?” Daryl responds.
“You still have that car back home. When are you going to pick that up anyway?” Taylor asks.
“I don't know, man. I don't want to make the journey, and that car is a piece of shit, anyway.” Daryl responds.
“Well, fuck. It's better than nothing. Let me have this one. We’ll get you something later.” Taylor asks with a tinge of hope.
“Fuck, fine. Let's get you a car, you loveable bastard.” Daryl says with a smile. “By the way, how are you making this stuff anyway?” He asks.
“Do you want to know?” Taylor replies with a question.
“Nah, not really. I'm just happy to make money.” Daryl answers.
…
…
“Yeah, I'm outside your dorm.” Taylor says through the phone.
“I'll be out in a minute.” She says.
…
…
“Soo, what you been up to?” She asks.
They've been on a few dates since Taylor has moved back. But the spark seems to have faded since the move.
“Not much. Dealing drugs. You know, the ushual.” Taylor responds.
“Awesome. Awesome. Anything you want to do today?” She says as she takes a sip of coffee.
“Let's take a walk in the park.” Taylor responds.
“Okay.” Sylvie says with a smile.
…
…
“Yeah, fuck the Demon Heart gang. Without them this whole operation would be much easier.” Taylor says as he strolls through the path.
“Well, why don't you build a gang of your own?” Sylvie says with teasing smile.

“Fuck, I probably should. But that would be crossing the line. At that point, I think this might turn illegal. You know how dudes are; territories and all that.” Taylor answers.
“I guess. But I thought you were a bigger man than that.” She says, continuing to tease.
“I'm a super big man. I just don't want to play that game. It seems complicated.” Taylor responds.
As they continue to stroll, a dude walks by.
“Sylvie? Is that you?” The man calls out.
“Ah, Kyle. What's up?” She says.
“Didn't catch you at the morning lecture today.” The man says. “I see you had more important things on your mind.” He says as gives Taylor a look.
“Taylor.” Taylor responds as he holds out his hand.
The man reaches for it and as their hands touch, the man's eyes flash red.
An almost incomprehensible whisper left his mouth. But Taylor could hear it.
“If you have the balls to try, ask for her permission.” Taylor responds. “Nice meeting you, Kyle.” He responds before taking Sylvie’s hand and walking away.
As he walked further a cold sweat appeared on Taylor's face.
Fuck, that was a vampire. That was definitely a vampire. Are vampires real? There's cultivators so there must be vampires, right? Is that how it works? Taylor thinks to himself.
“What did he say to you?” Sylvie asks, her smile continuing to tease him.
Taylor looked to her with wide eyes. Could she hear it too? He asks himself.
“Nothing.” Taylor says with a smile. “It was something between men.” He says.

Old Riding Author Lunatic Asylum
Just off the A19, in the dark, incomprehensible lands known as Yorkshire, there lies a town. A town where shadow-silent alleys glint with the secret hunger of knives. Where blood soaks the chipboard window shutters of forsaken terraces stretching off into the night. Where the smog-choked air rattles with the depraved laughter echoing out from clubs that can only generously be described as post-apocalyptic. Well, that’s Middlesbrough. But down the A19 a bit (an impossibly long way down, actually) there lies another town: Raughnen, in the ancient, forgotten Old Riding. It is an equal match in muggery and thuggery alike. It also has magic spells and pointy wizard hats. And now, across the miles and across all sensibilities, a pretty nasty power (a magic one) calls out for its pretty nasty counterpart (a decidedly unmagic one): a proper sound Boro lad. Nothing good can come of it. This is a collection of one novella and four connected short stories: I. A Yorkshire Summoning II. Old Riding Day Trip (the novella) III. Heaven is a Parmo IV. Death on the 66 V. Death on the 257 In total, this comprises 34 chapters totalling around 35,000 words, so try not to worry. It will be over relatively quickly. There are three more short stories with more tenuous links to the core collection: Rush, Paper Round and Scenario 79: Sausage Fingers, all of which can be found in my collection Short Records of Misadventure. Reading these may allow you to make more sense of certain parts of the story, if any sense is to be made at all. NOTE: There are instances of prejudice and discrimination within these stories, including elements of sexism and ageism, which are purely the thoughts and actions of the characters involved and which certainly do not reflect my own views on these matters. ANOTHER NOTE; A WARNING, PERHAPS: This can get a bit weird. In less than 150 pages, we have four viewpoints, first and third person narratives, and a completely disjointed plot with lots of gaps, dead ends and no real resolution. Also ZERO lunatic asylums. It's all a bit odd. If that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea, which it most likely isn't, it might be best to move on now.
